To check voicemail on a Samsung Galaxy, open the Phone app, tap the keypad, then touch and hold 1 to call your carrier’s voicemail system. Follow the spoken prompts to hear messages or, on first use, set up your mailbox password and greeting. Visual voicemail is another option when your carrier, region, device and app support it.
Call your carrier mailbox to listen to voicemail
- Open the Phone app on your Galaxy.
- Open the keypad or dial pad.
- Touch and hold 1. The phone calls the voicemail service associated with your line.
- Follow the spoken prompts to play new or saved messages.
On first use, the carrier’s prompts may ask you to create a mailbox password and record a greeting or your name. Exact prompts and available options depend on the carrier. Choose between calling and visual voicemail
Calling the mailbox plays messages through spoken prompts. Visual voicemail displays messages in an inbox so you can choose which one to play. Availability and features vary by carrier, region, device and app; visual voicemail may also require compatible service on your line.

Find visual voicemail on a Galaxy
Use the carrier’s voicemail app
If your carrier provides visual voicemail, open the voicemail app it supplies and follow its welcome and setup screens. The app’s name and icon can vary by carrier. For example, Verizon’s Samsung-specific instructions describe opening its Voicemail app, selecting a message and tapping play. Verizon also says deleted messages cannot be retrieved and archived messages are saved to the device’s internal storage; those details apply to its service, not every Galaxy voicemail app. Verizon’s Samsung visual voicemail guide
Use visual voicemail in Google’s Phone app, if supported
In Google’s Phone app, the documented path is More options → Settings → Voicemail → Visual voicemail. This path is for Google’s Phone app and should not be assumed to match Samsung’s Phone app. Google says visual voicemail is not supported by all carriers or regions. It also warns that using a carrier voicemail app turns off visual voicemail in Google’s Phone app to avoid conflicts. Google Phone Help

Clear a voicemail notification that will not go away
First call voicemail and listen to all new messages. Samsung says the alert should normally clear after that. If it remains, Samsung’s UK guidance suggests clearing Call settings cache and data, but clearing data resets Phone app history and removes recent calls. Contacts remain. - Open Settings → Apps.
- If needed, use the menu to show system apps.
- Open Call settings → Storage, then clear cache and data.
- If the alert remains, repeat the process for the Phone app.
- If the notification still will not clear, contact your network provider to check voicemail mailbox or account settings.
What Samsung Direct voicemail does—and does not do
Samsung’s US guidance describes Direct voicemail as a separate Galaxy feature for phones running Android 16 with One UI 8.5 or higher. It can let a user send an incoming call directly to voicemail or after a selected ring duration, and may allow answering while the caller is recording. Samsung says availability and options vary by model, software version and carrier. Direct voicemail concerns how an incoming caller leaves a message. To retrieve messages, use the carrier mailbox shortcut or a supported visual voicemail app.
