The correct fix depends on which symptom you have. First check the current software version and update screen, then work through Wi-Fi, charge, storage and carrier checks. If the on-device update still fails, Samsung’s Smart Switch computer method is an alternative official route. A device that cannot boot normally after a failed update needs Samsung or authorized service to reflash it.
Menus, release timing and requirements vary by model, software version, carrier and country. The steps below therefore use Samsung’s general labels while noting where your device may show different wording.

Identify what “not updating” means
The phrase “my Galaxy will not update” does not identify a single fault. Decide which description matches your device before changing settings:
- No update is listed: the device says its software is current, or the expected update does not appear.
- The download will not start: the update is offered but remains queued, errors immediately or cannot connect.
- The download stops: progress pauses or an error appears before the package is complete.
- Installation fails: the phone downloads the package but cannot install it or reboots back to the old version.
- The phone will not boot afterward: it is stuck on a logo, repeatedly restarts or stays on a recovery/error screen.
To record the starting point, open Settings > About phone (or About tablet) > Software information. Samsung notes that the exact labels can vary. Write down the Android version, One UI version, baseband version and model number; support staff and the original carrier use those details to determine eligibility and release status.

Do not infer a firmware or hardware failure merely from an absent update. Carriers participate in releasing Galaxy software, and a rollout can be staged rather than simultaneous.
When no update is available
Confirm the carrier and country release path
Samsung updates are distributed according to the specific device variant and the carrier that released or sold it. An unlocked handset that was originally sold for a carrier may still depend on that carrier’s release process. Contact the original carrier with the exact model number and current software version; a SIM from that carrier may be required for the update check in some circumstances.
Do not use another model’s release date as proof that yours is eligible. The same Galaxy name can represent different regional or carrier firmware, and general support pages do not establish current eligibility for every model.
Allow for staged distribution
A newly released update may arrive in waves. If the carrier confirms that your exact variant is included but the phone still reports that it is current, check again later rather than repeatedly resetting the device. A delayed listing by itself is not evidence that the phone is damaged.
Use a suitable connection
Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network when checking and downloading. Samsung’s regional guidance says some carriers require Wi-Fi for an update, while other devices may permit mobile data. Follow the requirement shown on your screen and avoid an unstable or captive-portal network such as a hotel sign-in page.

Check the computer option
Samsung’s Smart Switch software for a computer can sometimes detect an update before, or instead of, the on-device screen. It only helps when Smart Switch offers a package for that exact device; it cannot create an update that the carrier has not released. Some carriers also provide their own computer-update tools, so ask the original carrier whether one applies to your model.
Prepare the device before retrying
Charge and follow the on-screen battery instruction
Installations can fail when the battery is too low. Charge the phone or tablet and follow the battery level requested by the update screen. Samsung’s general instructions recommend a sufficiently charged battery, but they do not establish one universal percentage for every model or region.

Check internal storage
Open the storage section in Settings and compare available internal space with the amount requested by the update. If an error says more space is needed, free at least the amount specified. Remove or move large videos, offline downloads and unused applications, then empty the relevant trash or recycle-bin folders. An update may need temporary working space in addition to the size of the downloaded package, so leave a margin rather than targeting the exact minimum.
Keep personal data protected
Back up important photos, messages and authenticator data before an update attempt. A normal update is designed to preserve your data, but a failed installation can require service. Do not erase the phone or perform a factory reset simply because an update is missing; a reset does not make a carrier release an update and can remove data without fixing the cause.
Fix a download that stops or will not start
Resume an interrupted package
If the download stopped before completion, look for the update notification. Samsung says a partial download may be resumed from that notification. Use the resume control rather than starting unrelated troubleshooting first. Keep the device on a stable Wi-Fi connection and connected to power if practical.

Resolve storage errors exactly as reported
When the update reports insufficient storage, follow the number shown by the device. Free that amount of internal space, restart the update screen and retry. Do not substitute an SD card unless the device explicitly offers that option; the update process generally requires internal working space.
Stabilize the network
Move closer to the Wi-Fi access point, pause large downloads on the same network and try another trusted network if the connection repeatedly drops. If other devices also lose connectivity, fix the network first. If only the Galaxy fails while the network is stable, continue with storage, software and Smart Switch checks rather than repeatedly reconnecting.
Test for a downloaded-app conflict
Samsung’s regional troubleshooting identifies third-party apps as a possible cause when space is sufficient. Start the device in Safe mode, which disables downloaded apps, and retry the update check or installation. The key combination varies by model; use the power menu or Samsung’s on-device instructions for your software version. If the update works in Safe mode, a recently installed or updated app may be interfering. Restart normally, remove or update likely offenders one at a time, and test again. Safe mode is a diagnostic step, not a permanent operating mode.
When installation fails after the download
Read the exact error before retrying
An installation failure can be caused by inadequate working space, an interrupted package, an unstable connection during verification or software interference. Record the wording and any error code, then confirm charge, storage and network conditions before another attempt. Repeated retries without changing the relevant condition can leave the same failure unresolved.
Retry from the device update screen
Return to the software-update page and use the available retry or resume control. Keep the phone connected to power and do not use demanding applications during installation. Do not interrupt a reboot or disconnect power while the progress screen is active.

Use Safe mode only to isolate app interference
If the update succeeds in Safe mode but fails in normal operation, investigate downloaded apps. If it fails in both modes after storage and network checks, the problem is less likely to be a third-party app; move to Smart Switch or carrier/Samsung support rather than deleting applications at random.
Install the update with Samsung Smart Switch
Smart Switch is an alternate official path that uses a computer and USB connection. It is convenient when the phone’s update screen cannot complete the process, but it is not a guaranteed workaround: Smart Switch must detect the device and offer an update for its exact carrier and firmware.
- Install or update Smart Switch on a compatible computer.
- Open Smart Switch, then connect the Galaxy phone or tablet with a compatible USB data cable.
- Unlock the device if prompted and approve the computer connection.
- Wait for Smart Switch to identify the model. If an update is offered, read the displayed version and requirements before selecting the update command.
- Back up important data if Smart Switch presents that option, then start the update.
- Keep the cable connected, leave the computer powered and do not use or restart the device until Smart Switch reports completion.
Smart Switch may show no update even when you expected one. That result reflects release availability for the connected device; it is not proof that the computer software is broken.

Choose the correct USB mode
When the phone asks how to use USB, select Transferring files / Android Auto (wording can vary). A charge-only selection prevents Smart Switch from communicating with the device.

- Try another USB port directly on the computer rather than a hub or adapter.
- Use a compatible cable that supports data, not only charging. Check the connector type required by your Galaxy and computer.
- Restart both the phone and computer, then reconnect with Smart Switch already open.
- Install pending computer updates and update or reinstall Smart Switch if it fails to detect the device.
- If possible, test another computer to distinguish a computer-side problem from a phone or cable problem.
Some carrier-specific USB update modes are not compatible with Smart Switch. If the phone connects for file transfer but Smart Switch still offers no update or repeatedly errors, ask the original carrier whether its own computer tool is required.

Do not disconnect during the update
Once the installation begins, keep the cable attached and avoid pressing buttons or launching other tasks. A cable disconnection during firmware writing can leave the device unable to start normally.
What to do if the Galaxy will not boot after the failure
A phone that repeatedly restarts, remains on the Samsung logo or cannot reach the normal lock screen after an update failure has crossed from routine troubleshooting into service territory. Samsung’s guidance states: “If the device fails to boot normally after an update fails, service will be required to reflash the device.”
Contact Samsung support or an authorized service location, or the appropriate carrier service channel when the carrier supplied the device. Have the model number, carrier, country, software version and the exact failure sequence ready. Service availability, cost and warranty treatment depend on location and device condition and are not universal.

An incorrect package or interrupted reflash can worsen the problem and may erase data.
Choose the right path for the symptom

On-device updating is the simplest path when the carrier has released the package and the phone can download it. Smart Switch adds a computer and USB requirement but can succeed when the on-device process does not. Neither method can bypass carrier eligibility or create a package that has not been released.
Questions to answer before contacting support
- What are the exact model number, carrier of original sale and country or region?
- Which Android, One UI, baseband and security-update versions are currently installed?
- Is the update missing, stuck downloading, failing during installation or followed by a boot problem?
- What error text or code appears, and at what percentage or stage?
- How much internal storage is free, and was the device connected to Wi-Fi and power?
- Did Safe mode change the result?
- Did Smart Switch detect the device, and did another cable, port or computer change the result?
These details let the carrier or Samsung distinguish release timing from a local download problem and from a firmware failure that requires service.
Practical prevention for future updates
- Keep a current backup of data that would be difficult to replace.
- Maintain reasonable free internal storage instead of waiting for an update to report a shortage.
- Install updates over a reliable Wi-Fi connection when the device or carrier requires it.
- Charge before starting and leave the device undisturbed during installation and reboot.
- Keep Smart Switch available if you regularly use a computer for backups or recovery.
- When an update is newly announced, verify the exact model and original carrier rather than relying on another Galaxy variant’s schedule.
The reliable decision rule is simple: establish whether the package is available, remove local download obstacles, try Smart Switch when appropriate, and send a non-booting device to Samsung service rather than escalating with unofficial firmware procedures.
