For most students who handwrite notes, annotate many PDFs, download lectures and want a stylus included, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE is the better-value purchase. Its box includes an S Pen, it accepts a microSD card, and Samsung gives both tablet and pen an IP68 rating under its stated laboratory conditions. Choose the iPad (10th generation) instead when you already use an iPhone or Mac, need an iPadOS app, prefer Apple’s A14 Bionic platform, or value a lighter tablet and Apple’s display features more than the cost of an additional Pencil.
Quick verdict
The two tablets serve different student priorities. The Galaxy Tab S9 FE is a complete note-taking and reading bundle: Samsung includes the S Pen, offers storage expansion through a separately sold microSD card, and lists IP68 protection for the tablet and pen. That combination reduces the upfront accessory and storage compromises that matter during a semester.

The iPad (10th generation) is the more compelling platform choice for an Apple household. It weighs less, uses Apple’s A14 Bionic chip, supports Apple Pencil models, and runs iPadOS apps. However, the Pencil is an extra purchase, and the iPad has only fixed 64GB or 256GB capacities. For students who carry a tablet between classes, keep a large offline media library or write directly on lecture slides, those differences are more important than a simple brand preference.

What you get from each tablet
Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE
Samsung positions the Tab S9 FE as a 10.9-inch Android tablet for multitasking, streaming and gaming. The cited Wi‑Fi configuration weighs 523g and uses an Exynos 1380 processor. Storage goes up to 256GB internally, with a separately sold microSD card available for expansion. The 8,000mAh battery is rated by Samsung for up to 16 hours of Wi‑Fi internet use.
#1 Best Overall
- S-Pen is Not Included **, 10.9" TFT LCD, 90Hz, 2304x1440px, 8000mAh Battery
- 128GB, 6GB RAM, Exynos 1380 (5 nm), Octa-core, Mali-G68 MP5, Android 13, upgradable to Android 14, One UI 6
- Rear Camera: 8MP, f/1.9 (wide), Front Camera: 12MP, f/2.4 (ultrawide), Bluetooth 5.3

- The device is Compatible with all GSM carriers including AT&T, T-Mobile, and most Global Carriers. Will Also work with Verizon, Straight Talk, Boost, US Cellular, etc.
The most consequential inclusion is the S Pen in the box. Samsung says the pen is optimized for Samsung Notes and Goodnotes and carries the same IP68 rating as the tablet. You therefore have a handwriting tool on day one rather than an additional line item in your student budget.
iPad (10th generation)
The 10th-generation iPad uses Apple’s A14 Bionic chip, with a six-core CPU and four-core GPU, and runs iPadOS. The Wi‑Fi model weighs 477g. Apple sells it with either 64GB or 256GB of fixed internal storage; its cited specification page does not list a microSD slot.
Apple lists compatibility with Apple Pencil (USB‑C) and Apple Pencil (1st generation). A first-generation Pencil requires a USB‑C to Apple Pencil Adapter for pairing and charging. The iPad box contains the tablet, a cable and a power adapter, so you must budget separately for whichever Pencil you choose.

Note-taking: the included pen is the decisive difference
Galaxy Tab S9 FE with S Pen
The Tab S9 FE is the simpler recommendation for students who expect to write every day. The S Pen ships with the tablet, so lecture annotation, handwriting practice and marking up a PDF do not depend on another purchase. Samsung specifically describes optimization for Samsung Notes and Goodnotes, two workflows commonly used for handwritten notebooks and imported documents.
The pen also carries an IP68 rating under Samsung’s stated test conditions. That does not make careless submersion sensible, but it gives the tablet-and-pen bundle a documented resistance rating that the iPad specification page does not provide.

iPad with Apple Pencil
The 10th-generation iPad supports two Apple Pencil paths. Apple Pencil (USB‑C) is the current connector-based option listed for this iPad. Apple Pencil (1st generation) is also compatible, but Apple requires a USB‑C to Apple Pencil Adapter for that model’s connection and charging. Because neither Pencil is listed in the iPad box contents, include the chosen stylus and any required adapter in your total.
Apple Pencil compatibility can be the right answer when your course depends on an iPadOS application or when your existing Apple devices are already part of your study workflow. It is not automatically the cheaper note-taking option: the tablet and Pencil must be priced together.
Storage: decide before you download a semester of material
Why the Samsung approach suits large libraries
The Tab S9 FE combines up to 256GB of built-in storage with a microSD slot. A student can keep lecture recordings, scanned readings and offline video on removable media and add capacity later. The card is sold separately, so it is an extra purchase, but the upgrade does not require replacing the tablet.
Why iPad capacity needs more planning
The iPad offers a choice between 64GB and 256GB, with no microSD slot listed by Apple. The 64GB model can work for cloud-first note taking and light downloads, but it leaves less room for a growing offline library. If you routinely save video, large creative files or several years of course PDFs, the 256GB configuration is the more practical starting point because storage cannot be expanded afterward.
Performance and apps
A14 Bionic and iPadOS
Apple’s A14 Bionic has a six-core CPU and four-core GPU. That specification, combined with iPadOS, makes the iPad the safer pick when your decision depends on an iPadOS-specific application or on keeping demanding apps responsive. Students who already use iPhone or Mac can also prefer the continuity of staying in Apple’s software environment.

Exynos 1380 and Android
The Tab S9 FE uses Samsung’s Exynos 1380 and Android. Samsung presents it as suitable for multitasking, streaming and gaming. It is the natural fit for students who use Android phones, Windows PCs or Android-first services and want a familiar file and app environment.

Neither specification alone proves that every app will run better. Check the exact application required by your course, including whether it supports handwriting, external displays, file export and the accessories you plan to use. No independent benchmark or long-term software-support promise is established for this comparison, so a numerical performance winner should not be inferred from the processor names alone.
Display and reading comfort
The screens are close in physical size: Samsung identifies a 10.9-inch display, while the iPad’s measured display is 10.86 inches. That is enough space for a full-page PDF with room for annotations, split-screen notes or a video beside a document.
For the compared Wi‑Fi Tab S9 FE model, Smartprix reports 1440×2304 resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. The higher refresh rate can make scrolling through long notes or web pages feel smoother where it is enabled. The iPad lists 2360×1640 resolution, 264 pixels per inch, True Tone and 500 nits. Those listed characteristics favor the iPad for readers who prioritize pixel density, brightness and Apple’s color-temperature adjustment.
Refresh-rate and brightness figures do not describe the entire writing experience. Your choice should follow the content you consume most: rapid scrolling and Android familiarity favor Samsung, while the iPad’s listed display characteristics favor Apple for bright rooms and fine text.

Battery expectations without misleading comparisons
Samsung lists an 8,000mAh battery and “up to 16” hours of Wi‑Fi internet usage. Apple lists a 28.6Wh battery and “Up to 10 hours of surfing the web on Wi‑Fi or watching video.” These are vendor estimates made with different test procedures, settings and workloads; the figures are not a laboratory head-to-head result.
In practical terms, either tablet is specified to cover classes and ordinary study sessions between charges. Streaming video, high brightness, gaming, cellular connectivity where applicable and constant handwriting can reduce runtime. Treat the quoted hours as each manufacturer’s ceiling under its own test rather than as a promise that the Samsung model will last six hours longer in your timetable.
Durability and carrying it every day
Samsung’s documented protection
Samsung calls the Tab S9 FE “The first water and dust-resistant Galaxy S FE tablet.” It rates both tablet and included S Pen IP68 under its stated laboratory conditions. This is a meaningful advantage for a device used around drinks, crowded lecture halls and commuting, although an IP rating is not permission to expose electronics deliberately to water.
iPad’s lighter body
The Wi‑Fi iPad weighs 477g compared with 523g for the cited Wi‑Fi Tab S9 FE. The 46g difference is modest in isolation but noticeable when the tablet, keyboard, charger and books share a bag. Apple’s cited specification page does not show a water-resistance rating, so plan to use a case and keep the iPad away from spills rather than assume equivalent protection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTyping, essays and keyboard costs
Handwriting is only half of student work. If you write long essays, discussion posts or code, compare the tablet plus keyboard rather than the tablet alone.

Samsung’s September 2025 MSRP sheet lists compatible Tab S9 FE keyboard covers from $59.00 to $199.99. The sheet says prices can change, so use those figures as a reference and verify the live price, regional availability and exact model compatibility before buying.
Apple confirms a Smart Connector on the 10th-generation iPad, but the cited specification page does not publish keyboard pricing. You therefore need to add the cost of a compatible keyboard or case separately and compare that complete total with Samsung’s available covers. A keyboard can also add weight, partially reducing the iPad’s 46g portability advantage.
Which tablet fits your student profile?
Choose the Galaxy Tab S9 FE when you…
- Want a working handwriting setup in the box instead of buying a separate stylus.
- Store many PDFs, recordings or downloaded lectures and want microSD expansion.
- Prefer Android, use an Android phone or work primarily with Windows.
- Want a documented IP68 rating for both the tablet and pen.
- Need to control the total cost of a note-taking setup and can use Samsung’s included S Pen.
Choose the iPad (10th generation) when you…
- Already use an iPhone or Mac and value staying with iPadOS.
- Need an iPadOS-only app or specifically want Apple’s A14 Bionic platform.
- Prefer the lighter 477g Wi‑Fi model for commuting.
- Value the listed 2360×1640 resolution, 264 ppi, True Tone and 500-nit display.
- Are prepared to buy an Apple Pencil and select 64GB or 256GB carefully because storage cannot be expanded.
For essay-heavy courses
Make a short cost worksheet before ordering: tablet configuration, stylus, keyboard cover, case, charger needs and storage. Samsung’s included pen lowers the starting total, while the iPad requires a Pencil budget. Conversely, a student who already owns a compatible Apple Pencil may have a different total from a first-time buyer; confirm compatibility rather than assuming every Pencil works with every iPad.

Do not label either model a professional-class creative tablet solely from these specifications. Check the exact app, canvas-size limits, file formats, pressure and shortcut features, external-display requirements and stylus model required by your course. The available evidence establishes compatibility and hardware specifications, not a universal creative-performance ranking.
A practical buying checklist
- List your essential apps. Identify whether each course tool is Android, iPadOS or web based, and confirm handwriting and export features.
- Estimate offline storage. Count current PDFs, recordings and video, then leave room for the next semester. On iPad, decide between 64GB and 256GB before purchase; on Samsung, decide whether a microSD card belongs in the budget.
- Price the writing tool. The Tab S9 FE includes its S Pen. For iPad, choose Apple Pencil (USB‑C) or Apple Pencil (1st generation), adding the USB‑C to Apple Pencil Adapter when the first-generation model requires it.
- Price typing separately. Use Samsung’s September 2025 keyboard MSRP range as a reference, verify current regional pricing, and find the live price of the iPad keyboard you actually intend to use.
- Check the exact model. Confirm Wi‑Fi versus cellular, internal-storage tier, keyboard-cover fit and stock in your country. The cited weights and display comparison refer to Wi‑Fi configurations.
- Plan protection. Samsung’s IP68 claim applies under stated lab conditions; Apple’s cited page gives no water-resistance rating. A case and careful handling remain sensible for either device.
Bottom-line recommendation
Buy the Galaxy Tab S9 FE if your student tablet is primarily a digital notebook, PDF reader and video library. The included S Pen, microSD expansion and IP68 tablet-and-pen rating solve practical student problems without requiring an immediate accessory purchase.
Buy the iPad (10th generation) if your decision is driven by Apple ecosystem continuity, a required iPadOS app, A14 Bionic performance, lower carry weight or the iPad’s listed display characteristics. Just account for the Pencil and choose 256GB if your study materials will not fit comfortably in 64GB.
