Certification and benchmark records did suggest that Samsung was preparing the original Galaxy Tab S6 Lite for release, but they did not confirm a launch date. Samsung announced the tablet on April 16, 2020, targeted Q2 availability, and later said U.S. sales began May 29, 2020. This is therefore a retrospective account of the 2020 model—not a report that the tablet is still awaiting launch.
What was certified before launch?
The evidence most clearly tied to the pre-release story is an ENERGY STAR database record for model SM-P610, dated March 24, 2020: ENERGY STAR record. A separate Geekbench entry identified SM-P610 as “Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite”: Geekbench listing.
The original report’s specific certification filing or agency is not established by the available records. It would be inaccurate to label it an FCC, Bluetooth SIG or Wi-Fi Alliance approval without the underlying filing. The documented evidence shows a model moving through certification and testing, not a published retail schedule.
What that signal could—and could not—tell readers
- It made a release in the near term plausible and indicated that Samsung was preparing the device.
- It did not establish a launch date, final price, worldwide availability or simultaneous release of every model.
- A record for SM-P610 (the Wi-Fi version) does not by itself certify SM-P615, the LTE version, for every country or carrier.
- Early databases and benchmarks may omit final colors, storage configurations, software regions and included accessories.
Which Galaxy Tab S6 Lite models were involved?
| Model | Connection | What the documentation supports |
|---|---|---|
| SM-P610 | Wi-Fi | Original 2020 model; appears in the ENERGY STAR and Geekbench records |
| SM-P615 | LTE/mobile data | Original 2020 cellular model; availability and supported bands vary by market and carrier |
Samsung’s U.S. datasheet identifies both model numbers: Galaxy Tab S6 Lite datasheet. Firmware pages also show Android 10-era records for SM-P610 and SM-P615: SM-P610 firmware and SM-P615 firmware.

These details come from Samsung’s launch announcement and technical datasheet: Samsung U.S. newsroom and Samsung datasheet. Samsung also promoted Samsung Notes, Samsung Kids and entertainment features for note-taking, learning and family use. Those are Samsung’s product-positioning claims, not independent performance measurements.
When did Samsung actually announce and sell it?
- March 24, 2020: The ENERGY STAR record for SM-P610 was dated, providing one documented pre-launch signal. Source
- April 16, 2020: Samsung announced Galaxy Tab S6 Lite and said availability was planned for Q2 2020. Source
- April 24, 2020: Samsung Canada began pre-orders. Source
- May 8, 2020: Samsung Canada listed that purchase date for its market. Source
- May 29, 2020: Samsung’s U.S. update said the tablet was available from Samsung.com starting at $349.99. That was the original U.S. launch price, not a current 2026 price. Source
The Canadian schedule and U.S. schedule should not be merged: pre-order and purchase dates were regional.

Why the certification was useful but not conclusive
Regulatory or technical certification can show that a device has entered an approval process. It cannot guarantee that Samsung will release it on a particular day, sell it in every country, use the same radio bands everywhere or keep the same retail configuration. The definitive evidence in this case was Samsung’s announcement and subsequent availability update, not the certification record alone.
What made the original tablet appealing?
- The S Pen was included rather than sold as a separate accessory.
- A 10.4-inch screen provided more room for handwriting and media than a phone.
- microSD expansion could supplement the 64GB or 128GB internal options.
- The SM-P615 LTE version offered mobile data where Samsung and carriers sold it.
- Samsung’s software included note-taking and family-control features.
The trade-offs were equally important: the panel was TFT rather than OLED, RAM was 4GB, the Exynos 9611 was entry-level by 2026 standards, and USB-C operated at USB 2.0. Samsung’s battery-capacity and usage statements are specifications or manufacturer claims; actual endurance varies with brightness, applications, connectivity and battery age.

Do not confuse the 2020 tablet with later refreshes
“Galaxy Tab S6 Lite” is a product name used across multiple generations. The model numbers SM-P610 and SM-P615 identify the original 2020 family in the cited documentation. Listings described as 2022 or 2024 editions can have different processors, software and support positions. Do not use the 2020 specifications to describe those refreshes.
Checklist for a current listing
- Read the exact model number and confirm the generation.
- Determine whether it is Wi-Fi or LTE, and check local carrier-band compatibility for LTE.
- Confirm storage and whether the S Pen is included.
- Check the regional Samsung firmware page rather than assuming future update support.
- For used or old stock, inspect battery condition.
- Verify that cases and screen protectors fit that generation.
- Compare the asking price with newer budget tablets; a low price does not automatically make an older unit good value.
Bottom line
The pre-release certification and benchmark activity were meaningful signs that Samsung was preparing the original Galaxy Tab S6 Lite, but they never guaranteed a date or global rollout. Samsung’s April 16, 2020 announcement, Q2 target and May 29 U.S. sales update supplied the confirmation. Anyone evaluating one now should identify the exact generation first, because 2020, 2022 and 2024 products are not interchangeable.
