The brightness specifications are not a controlled head-to-head comparison: Apple lists up to 1,000 nits for SDR and 1,600 nits peak for HDR, while Samsung lists up to 1,600 nits peak for the S12 series. Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra: maximum canvas
Samsung’s 14.6-inch panel gives the S12 Ultra the largest screen in this comparison. That extra area can make split-screen reading, drawing and viewing documents more comfortable, but it also means carrying a larger tablet. Samsung lists the US model at 5.1mm thick. For a specific UK 5G, 256GB configuration, Samsung lists 695g and a 2960 × 1848 resolution; those regional specifications should not be assumed for every market or connectivity variant. iPad Pro M5: choose 11 or 13 inches
The 13-inch iPad Pro is the closer size comparison to Samsung’s large tablet, while the 11-inch is for people who prioritize portability. Apple lists Wi-Fi weights of 579g for the 13-inch and 444g for the 11-inch models. Both are 5.1mm thick, except the 11-inch model is 5.3mm. For commuting or frequent travel, the 11-inch iPad’s listed Wi-Fi weight is notably lower than the cited UK 5G Samsung configuration. This is not a like-for-like network comparison: the Samsung figure is for a UK 5G model, while Apple’s cited weights are for Wi-Fi models. Compare the exact regional and cellular configurations you would buy.

How do the pen and keyboard costs compare?
For handwriting and drawing
The S12 Ultra includes its S Pen, making it the simpler out-of-box choice if you expect to annotate documents or take handwritten notes. Apple lists Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C) as compatible with the M5 iPad Pro, but does not list either as included. Samsung lists Pro Keyboard and Book Cover Keyboard Slim among its S12-series accessory options. The iPad Pro has a Smart Connector that supports its keyboard-accessory ecosystem. Which one is better for performance and battery?
Performance: distinguish claims from benchmark results
Samsung says the S12 series’ 3nm processor delivers up to 61% faster NPU processing, 19% faster CPU performance and 17% improved GPU performance versus the Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra. In Tom’s Guide’s review measurements, the iPad Pro M5 scored 4,155 single-core and 16,517 multi-core in Geekbench 6, versus 3,229 and 9,763 for the S12 Ultra. In 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Unlimited, the publication reported 9,934 (59 fps) for the iPad and 6,608 (39.7 fps) for the Samsung. Battery: do not equate a claimed maximum with a browsing test
Samsung advertises up to 23 hours under its stated test conditions. In Tom’s Guide’s continuous Wi-Fi web-browsing test with brightness set to 150 nits, the S12 Ultra lasted 11 hours 31 minutes and the iPad Pro M5 lasted 13 hours 16 minutes. Choose the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra if…
- You prefer Android or already use Samsung phones and services.
- You want the 14.6-inch display and a pen included in the purchase.
- You expect to use Samsung’s Multi Window or DeX features for multitasking. These are platform tools, not evidence that every desktop workflow or application will work like it does on a laptop.
Choose the iPad Pro M5 if…
- Your work depends on iPadOS apps, Apple devices or an established Apple Pencil workflow.
- You want to pick between an 11-inch travel-friendly size and a 13-inch workspace.
- You need the M5 iPad’s listed Thunderbolt/USB 4 connection or already rely on compatible iPad accessories.
Both product lines offer OLED screens and high refresh rates, so screen technology alone does not settle the decision. Verify that the apps you actually use—including specialist drawing, editing, office or classroom tools—support the features you need on the operating system you choose.

What should you compare before buying?
- Pick the size and connectivity first. Decide whether you want Samsung’s 14.6-inch model or an 11-inch or 13-inch iPad, then choose Wi-Fi or cellular where offered.
