Choose the Galaxy Tab S10 FE if you want an Android tablet with an S Pen in the box, microSD expansion, a 90Hz display and stated IP68 protection. Choose the current iPad Air with M4 if you already use Apple devices, prefer iPadOS, want Apple Pencil Pro compatibility, Wi‑Fi 7 or a choice of 11-inch and 13-inch sizes. Neither is an across-the-board winner: the better tablet depends on your ecosystem, accessories and storage priorities.
This comparison covers the regular 10.9-inch Galaxy Tab S10 FE, not Samsung’s larger 13.1-inch FE+. Apple’s current iPad Air is the M4 generation; articles comparing the Tab S10 FE with an M3 iPad Air describe an earlier matchup.

The regular Galaxy Tab S10 FE
The name in this comparison refers to Samsung’s 10.9-inch Galaxy Tab S10 FE. Samsung also sells a 13.1-inch Galaxy Tab S10 FE+, which has a different size and should be compared with the 13-inch iPad Air only if you specifically want a large-screen tablet. The FE and FE+ are not interchangeable references in a buying guide.

The current iPad Air is the M4 generation
Apple’s current specification page identifies the iPad Air as an M4 model in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes. If you see a review pairing the S10 FE with an M3 iPad Air, treat it as historical. The software and accessory discussion may still be useful, but it is not a comparison with the current model.
Operating system and ecosystem should decide the tie
When Android and Galaxy integration make sense
The Tab S10 FE runs Android 15 as listed in Samsung’s announcement. It is the natural fit for someone already using a Galaxy phone, Samsung account, Windows PC or other Android devices. Shared files, notifications and account choices can be simpler when your existing devices use the same ecosystem. Android also makes the microSD slot useful for moving media and documents without replacing the tablet.
When iPadOS and Apple continuity matter more
The iPad Air runs iPadOS and uses the same Apple account and service environment as an iPhone or Mac. If your work already depends on Apple apps, iCloud files, AirDrop or Mac-to-iPad handoff, the Air avoids changing platforms. The M4 designation is Apple’s current chip choice, but the available specifications do not constitute an independent benchmark showing how much faster it is than the Exynos 1580 in every tablet task.

Samsung highlights Goodnotes, Clip Studio Paint and LumaFusion as examples for the FE series. Access, feature sets, purchase requirements and subscriptions vary by app and region; Samsung’s own footnotes note that some require a purchase or subscription. Choose the operating system that has the applications, file handling and accessories you actually use rather than assuming an app name guarantees identical features on both platforms.
Display and size: portability versus workspace
Choose the 10.9/11-inch class for everyday carrying
The 10.9-inch FE and 11-inch Air occupy the same practical category: reading, handwritten notes, travel, video and a compact keyboard cover. Samsung lists a maximum refresh rate of 90Hz, which can make scrolling and supported animations look smoother than a conventional 60Hz panel. Apple’s cited specifications provide resolution, pixel density and brightness, but do not state a refresh-rate figure in the supplied product information.

Choose a 13-inch model for split-screen work
The 13-inch Air provides a 2732 × 2048 panel at 264 ppi and a stated 600-nit brightness, while Samsung’s 13.1-inch FE+ is the larger FE option. A larger canvas is useful for two documents side by side, a timeline editor, sheet music or a keyboard-and-trackpad setup, but it adds weight and makes one-handed use less comfortable. Do not treat the regular FE as a substitute for the FE+ when screen area is your main requirement.
Read brightness numbers carefully
Samsung describes up to 800 nits in high-brightness mode for the FE series. Apple specifies 500 nits for the 11-inch Air and 600 nits for the 13-inch model. Because the manufacturers use different test wording and the figures are not from a controlled side-by-side measurement, they should not be turned into a definitive outdoor-screen ranking. In bright conditions, also consider glare, viewing angle, the surface of your chosen case and whether high-brightness mode changes battery use.
Pen and handwriting: the biggest accessory difference
What you get with the FE
Samsung says an S Pen is included with the Galaxy Tab S10 FE. The announcement also notes that this S Pen does not support Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), so do not expect BLE-dependent remote-control functions. For handwriting, marking PDFs or sketching, the included pen means you can start without adding another major purchase.
What you must budget for with the Air
The iPad Air supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), but Apple’s listed in-box contents do not include either Pencil. A compatible Pencil is therefore a separate purchase unless a retailer’s bundle explicitly says otherwise. Pencil Pro compatibility may appeal to artists or users who need its supported interaction features; the USB-C Pencil is the simpler option for writing and basic drawing. Check the exact Pencil model before ordering because support is model-specific.
Keyboard and desk use
Samsung lists its Book Cover Keyboard and Slim variant as compatible accessories. Apple offers its own keyboard options for the Air. Keyboard covers, trackpads and cases can change the total cost and the weight you carry, so compare a complete setup rather than tablet prices alone. Avoid assuming that a case for another FE generation or another iPad size will fit; verify the exact model number and screen size.

Storage and file management
Why the microSD slot changes the calculation
The FE is available in 128GB and 256GB configurations and supports microSD cards up to 2TB. That expansion is valuable for downloaded video, photographs, classroom files, game data and a large music library. A card is also replaceable: you can add capacity later instead of buying a new tablet. Card performance and app support still vary, and some applications keep their working files in internal storage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy Apple’s larger internal tiers may be simpler
The Air is listed with 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB internal capacities. Higher tiers cost more at purchase, but internal storage is straightforward and does not require managing a card. If your workflow depends on very large active projects, select the capacity before checkout; you cannot add internal storage later. Cloud storage can supplement either tablet, but it brings its own subscription, download and offline-access considerations.
Durability and exposure to water
Samsung states an IP68 rating for the Tab S10 FE under its laboratory conditions: fresh water up to 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes, along with dust protection. Samsung cautions that resistance can diminish over time. This makes the FE more reassuring near splashes, dusty work areas or accidental drops into fresh water than a tablet without a published rating, but it is not permission to use the tablet underwater, in salt water or while wet connectors are being charged. Dry the device and follow Samsung’s care guidance after exposure.
No IP water- or dust-resistance rating appears on the cited Apple iPad Air specifications page. That absence does not prove the Air will fail after a particular incident; it means Apple does not provide the same rated protection in the referenced specification. If water resistance is a deciding requirement, the FE has the clearer documented advantage.
Wireless and cellular choices
Wi‑Fi-only models
The FE lists Wi‑Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3. The Air lists Wi‑Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Newer standards can improve compatibility and peak capability with a suitable router or accessory, but your actual connection depends on the network, distance, congestion and regional certification. A Wi‑Fi 7 tablet does not make an older router faster.

Mobile connectivity
Samsung offers a 5G version of the FE. Apple’s cellular Air models use 5G and eSIM. Confirm the exact regional model, supported bands, carrier activation rules and whether your carrier allows tablet data sharing. Cellular hardware usually adds cost and may require a separate data plan, so a phone hotspot can be a cheaper solution for occasional travel.
Performance: what the published chips do and do not tell you
Samsung identifies the FE processor as Exynos 1580, while Apple identifies the Air processor as M4. Those names establish the platforms, not a universal real-world ranking. The supplied manufacturer information contains no independent benchmark, controlled multitasking test or app-rendering comparison. Performance can vary with the application, thermal conditions, storage capacity, operating-system version and workload.
For ordinary browsing, streaming, notes and office documents, ecosystem and accessory choices are likely to be more noticeable than a processor label. For sustained video editing, 3D work or professional creative applications, check the exact app’s supported features and export requirements on your chosen operating system. Do not buy either tablet on the assumption that a manufacturer’s performance language is an independent test result.
Samsung’s announcement quotes Changtae Kim, executive vice president and head of the New Computing R&D Team in Samsung’s Mobile eXperience Business: “The new Galaxy Tab S10 FE series brings advanced mobile AI experiences and Samsung’s connected ecosystem to even more tablet users, while still offering leading performance and design.” This is Samsung’s promotional characterization, not independent evidence of performance.

Battery expectations and charging habits
Samsung lists an 8,000mAh typical battery capacity for the FE and says actual life varies with use and network conditions. Apple estimates up to 10 hours of Wi‑Fi web browsing or video for either Air size. A capacity in milliamp-hours and a runtime estimate in hours measure different things, so neither figure proves that one tablet lasts longer in the same workload.
Best Value
- ATTENTION: this is the WIFI ONLY model
- Packaging contains the tablet, S Pen, a USB C to USB C cable, and a sim tray ejector tool.
- Display: IPS LCD, 90Hz | 10.9 inches, 344.5 cm2 (~81.7% screen-to-body ratio) | 1440 x 2304 pixels, 16:10 ratio (~249 ppi density)
- Main Camera: 13 MP, f/2.0, (wide) | 4K@30fps, 1080p@30fps; Selfie Camera: 12 MP, f/2.4, (ultrawide) | 4K@30fps, 1080p@30fps
- Battery: Li-Po 8000 mAh | 45W wired, QC2.0
Brightness, cellular radios, gaming, video exports, background synchronization and a weak Wi‑Fi signal can all reduce runtime. If you travel, compare charger availability and your preferred charging accessories as part of the setup. A cellular model may consume more power when searching for a signal, while a Wi‑Fi-only tablet paired with a phone hotspot shifts that drain to the phone.
Price and total cost of ownership
Samsung announced U.S. launch prices on April 2, 2025: $499.99 starting for the Wi‑Fi Galaxy Tab S10 FE and $599.99 for the 5G version. The same announcement listed the FE+ from $649.99. These are dated launch prices, not verified October 2026 sale prices. Retail promotions, storage configurations, trade-in credits and carrier offers can change the amount you pay, so check a live retailer before treating any figure as current.
The FE’s included S Pen gives its launch configuration a lower entry cost for note-taking than an Air configuration that needs a separately purchased Pencil. The Air’s higher internal-storage tiers can also raise the price substantially. Add the pen, keyboard, case, storage card, cellular plan and any app subscriptions you actually need before deciding which package is less expensive.
Which tablet should you buy?
Buy the Galaxy Tab S10 FE when these priorities match
- You use Android or Galaxy devices and want the least disruptive ecosystem.
- You need a pen immediately and want the S Pen included.
- You want microSD expansion instead of committing to a larger internal-storage tier.
- You value a stated IP68 rating for dust and fresh-water exposure, while accepting its laboratory limits.
- You prefer a 90Hz maximum refresh rate and the regular 10.9-inch size.
- You need an optional 5G tablet and your carrier supports the relevant Samsung model.
Buy the iPad Air M4 when these priorities match
- You already own an iPhone or Mac and rely on Apple’s account, file-sharing and continuity features.
- You specifically want iPadOS and applications optimized for that platform.
- You want the M4 iPad Air in either an 11-inch portable body or a 13-inch workspace.
- You want Apple Pencil Pro or Apple Pencil (USB-C) support and are prepared to buy the compatible Pencil separately.
- You prefer Wi‑Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 on the listed specifications.
- You need up to 1TB of built-in storage and do not want to manage removable media.
When neither is the obvious choice
If your only requirement is inexpensive video streaming, either operating system may be more capability than you need. If you require a laptop-class desktop workflow, test your essential applications and keyboard setup before buying; tablet software can behave differently from its desktop equivalent. If you need a very large Samsung screen, compare the FE+ directly with the 13-inch Air rather than using the regular FE as a proxy.
A practical buying checklist
- Choose the ecosystem. List the phone, computer, cloud account and two or three essential applications you already use. Start with the platform that minimizes account and file changes.
- Choose the physical size. Pick the 10.9-inch FE or 11-inch Air for carrying and hand use. Move to the 13-inch Air or 13.1-inch FE+ only when the larger workspace justifies the extra size.
- Price the complete kit. Include a Pencil for the Air, a keyboard or case, a microSD card if needed, and any cellular plan. Treat Samsung’s April 2, 2025 figures as historical launch prices until a current retailer confirms a price.
- Set your storage requirement. Select the Air’s internal tier before purchase, or decide how much content can live on the FE’s microSD card and what must remain internal.
- Verify connectivity. Check Wi‑Fi, 5G bands, eSIM support, carrier activation and regional model numbers. Do not assume an imported tablet will work identically on your network.
- Check accessory fit. Match the exact generation and screen size for Samsung’s Book Cover Keyboard or Slim variant, an Apple keyboard and any case. Confirm the Apple Pencil model before ordering.
- Review exposure and care. If water and dust are routine concerns, understand the FE’s IP68 test limits and Samsung’s warning that resistance can diminish. Neither rating nor a lack of rating replaces careful handling.
Bottom line
The Galaxy Tab S10 FE is the more self-contained purchase: it combines Android, an included S Pen, microSD expansion, 90Hz capability and a documented IP68 rating. The iPad Air M4 is the better fit for Apple households and for buyers who want iPadOS, M4 hardware, Wi‑Fi 7, Apple Pencil options and a choice between 11-inch and 13-inch designs. Decide on ecosystem, pen cost, storage method, size and water-resistance needs first; then verify the current configuration and price for your market.
