1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf your Samsung Galaxy still reports full storage after you delete photos or apps, the files probably have not been permanently removed—or another category is using the space. Deleted items can remain in Gallery or My Files Trash, while app cache, downloads, duplicate media, offline content and system files continue to occupy internal storage.
Open Settings > Device care (called Battery and device care on some versions) > Storage. Read the category breakdown before deleting anything. Then work through the fixes below, starting with the safest and most reversible options.

Why storage stays full after you delete files
Deleting a file in a Samsung app often moves it to a Trash or Recycle bin instead of removing it immediately. The item remains on internal storage until the retention period ends or you empty the bin manually. Recent Samsung software can combine Trash controls for My Files, Gallery and Voice Recorder, but the exact screen depends on your Galaxy model, Android release and One UI version.

- NEXT-GEN AND BACKWARD COMPATIBLE: Your microSD Express card is compatible with Nintendo Switch 2¹⁰ and microSD UHS-I¹¹ devices, including tablets, drones, cameras and more.
- App cache: temporary images, video fragments and other data created as apps run.
- App data: sign-ins, downloaded episodes, maps, projects, messages and other content stored inside an app.
- Downloads and installation files: documents, APK files, exported videos and attachments in the Downloads folder.
- Duplicate or large files: multiple copies of videos, photos or documents.
- Offline and backed-up media: a cloud backup does not automatically remove the local copy.
- System and “Other” storage: Android, One UI, updates and files that the system needs to operate.
Storage figures may take a short time to recalculate after a large deletion. A nearly full phone can also behave sluggishly, so leave some free space while you troubleshoot.
1. Check the storage breakdown before deleting more
- Open Settings.
- Tap Device care or Battery and device care.
- Tap Storage.
- Review the categories and open the largest one. Depending on the software, Samsung may show recommendations for large files, duplicate files, unused apps and Recycle bin contents.
Use the named category to decide what to inspect next. If Apps is largest, look at individual app sizes and cache. If Images or Videos is largest, review Gallery and cloud-backup status. If Recycle bin appears, empty it before attempting more destructive cleanup.
2. Empty every Samsung Trash or Recycle bin
Gallery Trash
- Open Gallery.
- Tap the menu (usually three horizontal lines or three dots).
- Open Trash or Recycle bin.
- Review the contents, then choose Empty and confirm permanent deletion.
Only empty Gallery Trash after checking that you do not need to restore an item. Permanent deletion generally removes the device copy and cannot be undone from the phone.

- Open My Files.
- Tap the menu and select Trash or Recycle bin.
- Check the list of deleted documents, images, videos and installation files.
- Tap Empty, then confirm.
Integrated Trash on newer software
On some newer Galaxy versions, Settings > Battery and device care > Storage displays app icons under Recycle bin. Open each listed app and tap Empty. Samsung documentation also describes integrated Trash controls for My Files, Gallery and Voice Recorder, with separate restore and permanent-delete actions.
If a bin is missing, open Gallery, My Files and Voice Recorder individually. Samsung’s regional instructions were updated July 14, 2023, and menu names can differ by region, model and One UI release.

3. Remove large, duplicate and downloaded files
After emptying the bins, use the Storage screen’s recommendations or open My Files directly. Review each file before deleting it; a large file may be a work document, an exported video or the only copy of a recording.
Large files
- Go to Settings > Device care/Battery and device care > Storage.
- Open the large-file recommendation if it is offered.
- Sort or filter by size and inspect the location and date.
- Delete confirmed duplicates or unwanted files, then empty My Files Trash.
Downloads and installation files
In My Files > Internal storage > Download, look for old documents, compressed archives, exported videos and APK installation files. Delete an APK only after confirming that you do not need it to reinstall the app. Check app-specific folders for offline media as well; streaming, navigation and social apps may keep downloads outside the main Downloads folder.
Duplicate media
Samsung’s Storage tools can identify duplicate files on supported versions. Compare filenames, dates and locations rather than deleting every similarly named item. Keep the copy that is in the folder or app you actually use, then empty Trash.
4. Clear cache without deleting app data
Cache is temporary data and is the safest app-level cleanup. Google describes the effect precisely: “Clear cache: Deletes temporary data. Some apps may be slow the next time you open them.” The app rebuilds needed cache as you use it.
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Select an app with unusually high storage use.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache, not Clear data or Clear storage.
Repeat for the largest apps, especially those that handle photos, video, social feeds, browsers, maps or music. Cache size can grow again, so this is maintenance rather than a permanent capacity upgrade.

Why Clear data is different
Clear data (also labelled Clear storage) removes the app’s locally stored information. It can sign you out, delete downloaded content, remove offline maps or erase in-app settings. Use it only after confirming that the account can restore the data and that you have another copy of anything important.
5. Uninstall unused apps or use app archiving
Uninstall apps you no longer need
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Select the app and check its storage size and last-use information, where available.
- Tap Uninstall and confirm.
Some preinstalled apps cannot be uninstalled. Samsung may offer Disable instead; disabling stops the app and can remove updates, but it does not always reclaim as much space as a full uninstall.
Archive rarely used apps
Google’s automatic app archiving removes an unused app while retaining its personal data and icon for later redownload when the app is available. Availability and wording depend on your Android version and Google Play settings. Archiving is useful when you want to keep an app’s sign-in or documents but do not need its executable files every day.
6. Clean up photos and videos only after verifying backup
Photos and videos are often the largest category, but deleting local media is irreversible unless another copy exists. If you use Google Photos, first verify the correct account and confirm that recent items show as backed up. Open several of the newest photos and videos while connected to Wi-Fi and check their backup status.
After backup is complete, Google Photos can remove device copies while retaining the backed-up versions for viewing in the app when you are online. The cloud copy is tied to the account that performed the backup, not merely to the phone, so switching accounts later can make files appear to be missing.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Move files to an SD card or computer
Use a microSD card when the model supports it
Only Galaxy models with a microSD slot can be expanded this way. Check the model’s specifications or the SIM/SD tray before buying a card; many recent Galaxy phones have no card slot. Card support and maximum capacity also vary by model.
- Insert a compatible microSD card and let the phone format it if prompted. Formatting erases existing card contents.
- Open My Files and choose Internal storage.
- Select files or folders, tap Move or Copy, choose the SD card, then select Move here or Copy here.
- Open several moved files from the card to verify them before deleting the originals from internal storage.
Samsung notes that many apps cannot be moved to an SD card, and moving an app is different from moving its media. Keep the card inserted when an app or file depends on it, and do not remove it while a transfer is in progress.
Copy to a computer with USB
- Connect the Galaxy to a computer with a USB cable that supports data, not charging only.
- Unlock the phone and choose File transfer or Android Auto from the USB notification.
- On the computer, open the phone’s internal storage and copy photos, videos and documents to a clearly named folder.
- Open several copied files on the computer before deleting the phone originals.
- Empty the phone’s Trash after confirming the transfer.
Computer transfer is slower than deleting cache but can reclaim the most space when a media library is large. Keep at least one additional backup for irreplaceable files rather than treating a single computer copy as permanent archival storage.

8. Recheck storage and diagnose a stubborn category
Return to Settings > Device care/Battery and device care > Storage after each major cleanup. Give the phone time to refresh the calculation, then compare the category sizes with the earlier reading.
If “Apps” is still unexpectedly large
- Open the app list and sort by size, if your software offers that option.
- Inspect cache first; do not clear data until you understand what the app stores locally.
- Check for offline downloads inside the app itself.
- Update or reinstall only after confirming account credentials and backups.
If “Images” or “Videos” barely changes
- Empty Gallery and My Files Trash again.
- Look in Downloads, messaging-app folders and camera export folders.
- Check whether a second Gallery or cloud account is showing media from another location.
- Wait for Storage to recalculate after a large transfer.
If “Other” or system storage is large
System files, update packages and app-private data can appear in broad “Other” categories. Do not delete unfamiliar folders with a file manager. Identify the app or Android screen naming the space first, and use supported uninstall, cache-clear or transfer controls.
When a factory reset is appropriate
A factory reset is a last resort, not a routine storage cleanup. It erases user data and returns the phone to its setup state. Consider it only when the storage reading remains clearly wrong after a verified backup, software updates and normal cleanup, and after checking Samsung’s model-specific support guidance. Confirm that photos, messages, authenticator codes, contacts, documents and app data are backed up before resetting.
Quick Recap
Which fix should you try first?
| Remedy | Safety | Reversibility | Typical capacity gained | Convenience | Compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Empty Trash or Recycle bin | Permanent deletion; review first | Not reversible after emptying | Can recover recently deleted media and documents | Fast, on-device | Available, but labels vary by model and One UI |
| Clear app cache | Low risk; temporary files only | Cache is rebuilt as needed | Usually modest and app-dependent | On-device, app by app | Android app settings |
| Clear app data | High risk to local app content | Usually not reversible without a backup | Potentially large for apps with offline data | Simple, but requires reconfiguration | Use only when account and backup are confirmed |
| Uninstall or archive apps | Check account and local files first | Reinstall may restore data, depending on the app | Can reclaim the app and its downloaded files | Fast for several unused apps | Archiving depends on Android/Google Play support |
| Delete backed-up device photos | Safe only after backup verification | Cloud restore depends on account access and availability | Potentially the largest gain | Convenient, but requires careful checks | Requires a working backup service and internet access |
| Move files to microSD | Low risk after verifying the copy | Files remain on the card | Large media libraries can be moved | On-device transfer | Only Galaxy models with a microSD slot; many apps cannot move |
| Copy files to a computer | Low risk after opening copied files | Reversible while both copies exist | Potentially very large | Requires cable and computer | Works with a data-capable USB connection |
Common mistakes that make the problem worse
- Deleting from Gallery but not emptying Trash: the storage is still occupied by the deleted items.
- Choosing Clear data instead of Clear cache: local downloads, sign-ins and settings can disappear.
- Assuming backup is complete: recent photos may still be uploading, or they may be backed up to a different account.
- Buying an SD card without checking the model: phones without a card slot cannot use one internally.
- Moving files and immediately deleting originals: a failed or partial transfer can leave no usable copy.
- Deleting unfamiliar system folders: Android or an app may need them, and the resulting failure can be harder to repair than the original storage issue.
- Expecting one cleanup to stay permanent: caches, downloads and offline media grow again as apps are used.
How to keep Galaxy storage from filling again
- Review Device care > Storage monthly instead of waiting for the phone to reach zero free space.
- Empty Trash after confirming that deleted items are no longer needed.
- Remove offline videos, music, maps and podcasts after trips or projects end.
- Turn on automatic app archiving if your Android version offers it.
- Keep camera and messaging media backed up, then periodically remove verified local copies.
- Transfer large videos to a computer or compatible SD card before recording more.
- Leave free space for Android updates and temporary app files; a phone operating at its limit is more likely to show misleading or delayed storage readings.
