Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo dictate on a Samsung Galaxy phone, place the cursor in a text field, open the keyboard, and choose the voice-input microphone. On the Galaxy Z Fold6 interface documented by Samsung, that choice is made from the keyboard button on the navigation bar. If the button is missing, enable it at Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default > Keyboard button on navigation bar, then return to the text field and select voice entry.
The exact control can differ with your Galaxy model, One UI version, carrier, region, and selected keyboard. Samsung’s manual cautions that “Some features may not be available depending on the carrier or model.” The procedure below identifies which steps are documented for the Z Fold6 and which alternatives are model-dependent, so you can recover dictation without confusing it with audio recording or Bixby messaging.

What Samsung phone dictation does
Keyboard dictation converts speech into characters in whichever text field currently has focus. It works while writing in a message, note, search box, form, document, or another app that accepts keyboard input. The result is text inserted at the cursor; you can inspect it, edit it, and then save or send it.
This is different from tapping a recording microphone inside an app. A recorder captures audio, while keyboard voice input recognizes speech and places words into the active field. It is also different from Bixby’s messaging workflow, which is covered later.

Start dictating with Samsung Keyboard
Before you begin
- Use an app with an editable text field.
- Tap that field so the on-screen keyboard appears.
- Use an input language supported by your phone and keyboard. Samsung notes that text entry is not available in every language.
- Keep the phone’s microphone opening clear of debris, a case edge, or protective film.
Documented steps on the Galaxy Z Fold6
- Open the app in which you want to write.
- Tap the destination field. The keyboard should appear and the cursor should blink in the field.
- Tap the Keyboard button on the navigation bar.
- Choose the microphone or voice-entry option from the input-method choices.
- Speak while the voice-input control is active. Watch the text field for the recognized words.
- Read the inserted text before you save, submit, or send it. The Z Fold6 manual establishes how to open voice entry, but it does not promise a universal transcription-accuracy rate.
The navigation-bar keyboard button is a selector for text-input methods. It may not look like a microphone until you open it; do not assume that a separate recording control inside the app will insert words into your field.
If the navigation-bar button is not visible
- Open Settings.
- Choose General management.
- Open Keyboard list and default.
- Turn on Keyboard button on navigation bar.
- Return to the app, tap the text field again, and use the newly visible keyboard button to select voice entry.
That path is the one shown in Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6 EU English user manual. A different Galaxy model or software build can place the same option elsewhere or use different wording. If your menus do not match, open the keyboard settings shown on your device and look for an option that controls the keyboard or input-method button on the navigation bar.
Check the result before committing it
Dictation is an input method, not an automatic send command. Pause to correct names, numbers, punctuation, and any words that were interpreted incorrectly. Only after the text says what you intend should you tap the app’s save, submit, or send control.
Use Google voice typing when it is the selected keyboard
Samsung also documents Google voice typing on Galaxy devices. Its Galaxy tablet support article instructs users to open an app that uses the keyboard, tap the microphone icon, and speak. The article is tablet-focused, so treat it as evidence that Samsung supports this alternative rather than as a guaranteed phone menu path for every Galaxy model.

General procedure
- Open an app with an editable field and tap the field to show the current keyboard.
- Look for the microphone icon in the keyboard interface and tap it.
- Speak, then inspect the words placed in the field.
- Correct the text before using the app’s own send or save command.
If the microphone is not shown, the phone may be using Samsung Keyboard, another keyboard, or a layout that hides the control. The input-method selector on the navigation bar can be more useful than searching inside the app for a recording button.
Google voice typing settings documented by Samsung
Samsung’s tablet instructions place customization at Settings > Language and input > On-screen keyboard > Google voice typing. On a phone, labels and nesting can differ by One UI release, region, and model. Use the on-device keyboard settings as the authority for your handset instead of assuming the tablet path is identical.
Samsung Keyboard and Google voice typing compared
Both methods are intended to put recognized speech into a focused text field. The practical difference is the keyboard or input method currently selected and where its voice control appears. Samsung’s available documentation does not establish a winner for accuracy, speed, privacy, or offline operation, so those characteristics should not be ranked from these sources.

Fix a missing microphone or keyboard button
First determine which control is missing
- No keyboard at all: tap an editable field. Dictation cannot start until an input field has focus.
- Keyboard appears, but no navigation-bar keyboard button: enable Keyboard button on navigation bar through the Z Fold6 manual’s settings path, recognizing that another model may label it differently.
- Keyboard button appears, but no voice option: inspect the available input methods and confirm which keyboard is selected. The voice control belongs to the input method, not necessarily to the app where you are typing.
- An app shows a recording microphone but no inserted text: that control may record audio rather than provide keyboard dictation. Return to the active text field and use the keyboard’s input-method control.
Confirm language and device availability
Samsung’s Z Fold6 manual says text entry is not supported in some languages and directs users to choose a supported input language. A missing voice option can therefore be a language or configuration issue rather than a damaged microphone. Carrier and model restrictions can also remove or relocate features. Check the keyboard’s language list and the options exposed by your own software build.
Restart after changing the setting
After enabling a keyboard button, changing an input method, or installing an update, close and reopen the app or restart the phone if the control does not immediately appear. A restart is one of Samsung’s general microphone-recognition troubleshooting steps and can reload the input service.
Improve recognition when dictated words are wrong
Inspect the physical microphone opening
Samsung advises checking that the microphone opening is not blocked by dirt, a phone cover, or protective film. Remove or reposition anything covering the opening, then try voice input again. Do not insert objects into the opening; the useful diagnostic is simply to make sure the opening is unobstructed.

Use Safe mode to look for an app conflict
Samsung also recommends testing microphone behavior in Safe mode when recognition problems persist. Safe mode limits third-party applications. If voice recognition works there but fails during a normal boot, a third-party app may be interfering with microphone access or input handling. That result identifies a possible app conflict; it does not prove that every keyboard-dictation failure has the same cause.
Separate recognition problems from insertion problems
If words appear in the wrong field, tap the intended field again and verify that the cursor is visible before starting voice input. If no words appear anywhere, test the microphone-related checks above and verify the selected input language. If words appear but need correction, review them before sending; Samsung does not publish a universal accuracy guarantee for Galaxy dictation.

There is no single menu layout shared by every Samsung phone. The main procedure in this guide comes from the Galaxy Z Fold6 EU English user manual, whose PDF revision filename indicates 14 August 2024. It is a useful example of Samsung’s interface, not a promise that the same labels appear on a Galaxy A-series phone, an older model, a carrier-customized build, or a different regional edition.

Samsung explicitly warns that some features may not be available depending on the carrier or model. Input-language support can also differ, and the cited materials do not provide a complete, current list of supported languages for every device. When your phone’s controls differ, follow the labels shown in its keyboard and input settings rather than forcing the Z Fold6 path.

Dictation is not the same as Bixby messaging
Keyboard dictation is the right tool when you want spoken words inserted into the text field currently open in any compatible app. Bixby serves a narrower messaging workflow: Samsung says you can ask Bixby to compose a text message for a contact.
Bixby does not automatically send the dictated message. Review the composed message and tap Send yourself. Samsung also notes that Bixby messaging may not work when Samsung Messages is not the default messaging app. If you use Google Messages, Samsung says the Text on Galaxy devices option must be enabled.
Those app-compatibility requirements apply to Bixby messaging, not to ordinary keyboard dictation. Do not switch to Bixby merely because the keyboard microphone is hidden; first restore the input-method control or select the keyboard voice option.

A practical decision path
- You need words in an open field: tap the field and open the keyboard.
- You use Samsung Keyboard and see the navigation-bar keyboard button: tap it and choose voice entry.
- You use Samsung Keyboard but cannot see that button: enable Keyboard button on navigation bar under Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default, then retry.
- You prefer or already use Google voice typing: use the microphone icon shown by that keyboard and consult the on-device settings; Samsung’s documented customization path is tablet-specific.
- Recognition remains poor: clear the microphone opening, update software, restart, and test in Safe mode.
- You want Bixby to address a contact: use Bixby’s messaging workflow, review the message, and send it manually; do not treat it as universal keyboard dictation.
What Samsung’s documentation does and does not establish
The official material identifies how to expose voice input, confirms that Google voice typing is an available alternative in Samsung’s Galaxy documentation, and supplies general microphone diagnostics. It does not publish a universal dictation accuracy percentage, a supported-device count, a complete language count, or comparative measurements for latency, privacy, or offline use. Those figures should not be inferred from the presence of a microphone icon.
For the most reliable result on your particular phone, use the active text field as the starting point, verify the keyboard and language selected on that device, and treat model-specific menu names as examples rather than universal rules.
Source and version notes
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 EU English user manual used for the main procedure carries a PDF revision filename indicating 14 August 2024. Samsung’s Galaxy tablet support article supplies the Google voice-typing example and its tablet-oriented settings path. Samsung UK’s microphone troubleshooting guidance, updated 30 April 2024, covers calls and voice-command recognition broadly rather than Samsung Keyboard dictation alone. Samsung US support supplies the Bixby messaging behavior and app-compatibility notes.
