Choose Samsung Galaxy SmartTag3 if you want a tracker that can work with supported Galaxy and iPhone devices through SmartThings; choose Apple AirTag (2nd generation) if your household uses Apple devices and Find My. SmartTag3’s iOS support does not include every Galaxy feature, and neither company’s network-size claims prove that its tag will update faster in your area. Both use replaceable CR2032 batteries, but their battery estimates come from different methods and should not be treated as a direct test comparison.

SmartTag3 vs. AirTag at a glance

The figures are simulated estimates based on internal typical-use scenarios with a prerelease unit and included battery. Replaceable CR2032. Availability stated by makers Samsung said Korea availability would begin October 7, 2026, followed by the U.S., with additional markets scheduled for 2027. As of October 3, 2026, the Korean first-sale date had not arrived; Samsung gave no exact U.S. date. Apple announced the second-generation AirTag as available on January 26, 2026.

Does Samsung SmartTag3 work with iPhone?

Yes, with limits. Samsung lists iOS 17 or later and requires the SmartThings app for SmartTag3. Samsung’s launch footnotes say Compass View, Ring Phone and Left Behind Alert are unavailable on iOS, so the iPhone experience is not feature-for-feature equivalent to using a supported Galaxy phone. Check Samsung’s SmartTag3 specifications and launch details for support information.

Samsung describes SmartTag3 as supporting core finding and sharing across the two operating systems. That cross-OS support may suit a household with both Galaxy and iPhone users, but consider the missing iOS features before choosing it for someone who will use an iPhone as their main finding device.

Can I use AirTag with Android?

Apple’s current compatibility information specifies an iPhone running iOS 26 or later or an iPad running iPadOS 26 or later, plus an Apple Account. The second-generation AirTag is designed around Apple’s Find My system; the cited Apple sources do not establish Android as a supported setup or tracking platform. See Apple’s AirTag product page and January 2026 announcement.

#1 Best Overall
Samsung SmartTag2 (2023) Bluetooth + UWB, IP67 Water and Dust Resistant, Findable via App, 1.5 Year Battery Life (4-Pack) - Black/White (Global Edition, No US Warranty)
  • Find your things with ease: The SmartThings Find app uses Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to locate and keep track of your stuff
  • Water and Dust Resistant: IP67 rating offers protection against dust and water immersion between 15 cm and 1 meter for up to 30 minutes
  • Compatible with Galaxy Devices Only

Which has better tracking, SmartTag3 or AirTag?

There is no established independent head-to-head test here to show that one tag consistently finds items faster or more reliably. For out-of-range reports, the practical question is which compatible devices are likely to be near the lost item: SmartTag3 reports through Samsung’s Galaxy Find Network, while AirTag uses Apple’s Find My network.

Out-of-range network reports

Samsung says more than 900 million participating Galaxy devices worldwide can act as Galaxy Find Network nodes. Apple says Find My comprises more than a billion iPhone, iPad and Mac devices. Those are each company’s published network-scale figures, not independent counts of active devices near your belongings or guarantees of update frequency. A report depends on nearby participating devices, settings, network conditions and location. Neither network can be assumed to work better everywhere based on the manufacturers’ totals alone.

Finding a tag nearby

Samsung advertises Bluetooth Channel Sounding guidance up to 60 m under line-of-sight conditions, Bluetooth LE connectivity up to 120 m and UWB up to 20 m. Walls, other obstructions and nearby electronics can reduce range or accuracy. Samsung’s September 30, 2026 launch footnote said Channel Sounding support at announcement was limited to Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Z Fold8, S26 Ultra and S26 Plus, with availability also subject to region. Compass View likewise requires supported Galaxy hardware.

Apple’s second-generation AirTag announcement says Precision Finding works from up to 50% farther away than on the previous generation and notes an upgraded Bluetooth chip, but does not state an absolute distance. That percentage is a comparison with the prior AirTag generation, not a meter figure directly comparable with Samsung’s advertised ranges. See Samsung’s launch announcement and Apple’s announcement.

How long does the SmartTag3 battery last?

Samsung estimates up to 550 days in standard use and up to 790 days in Power Saving Mode, using the included replaceable CR2032 battery. Samsung describes these as simulated estimates from internal testing of typical-use scenarios on a prerelease SmartTag3; actual life varies with use, surroundings, battery manufacturer and other factors. Power Saving Mode disables Compass View, volume, ringtone settings and other features, though basic Bluetooth LE finding remains. These are maker estimates, not independently measured results. See Samsung’s launch announcement and specifications.

How long does an AirTag battery last?

Apple says the second-generation AirTag lasts more than a year on a standard, replaceable CR2032 battery. Apple cautions that actual life varies with usage, environmental conditions and the battery manufacturer. See the AirTag product page and launch announcement. Because Samsung and Apple describe different estimates and do not provide a shared test, the figures do not establish that one tag lasts a specific number of months longer than the other.

Which tracker should you choose?

  • Choose SmartTag3 if you use supported Galaxy devices, or want SmartThings-based core finding and sharing across a Galaxy-and-iPhone household and can accept the iOS feature restrictions.
  • Choose AirTag if your setup is based on current Apple devices and Find My.
  • For mixed or changing households, compare the supported phone each person will use, access to nearby-finding features and the devices likely to be near the item—not just the networks’ published device totals.

What IP67 means for either tag

Both products are rated IP67. Samsung and Apple each describe protection in water up to 1 m deep for up to 30 minutes, but each warns that resistance can diminish with wear. The rating is not a promise of permanent waterproofing or protection in every real-world water exposure. See the linked Samsung specifications and Apple announcement.
