Choose the tracker that matches your phone, not the other way around. Galaxy SmartTag2 is built for Samsung Galaxy phones and Samsung’s SmartThings Find service. AirTag is built for iPhone, iPad and Apple’s Find My network. Neither is a sensible universal tracker that you can fully set up and manage from any Android phone or iPhone.
If you use a Samsung Galaxy, start with SmartTag2. If you use an iPhone and Find My, start with AirTag. Then check your exact operating-system version, phone hardware and tracker generation before buying, because precision-finding and setup requirements are stricter than the basic compatibility labels suggest.

The short answer
| Question | Galaxy SmartTag2 | Apple AirTag |
|---|---|---|
| Primary phone ecosystem | Samsung Galaxy and SmartThings Find | Apple Find My |
| Detailed setup requirement | Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet, Android 11 or later, at least 3 GB free RAM, Samsung account and SmartThings Find opt-in | Original AirTag specifications: Apple ID, iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 14.5 or later, or iPad with iPadOS 14.5 or later |
| Nearby finding | Bluetooth, buzzer and Compass View on supported UWB Galaxy phones | Bluetooth, speaker and Precision Finding on compatible UWB Apple devices |
| Current precision-finding note | Compass View requires a supported Galaxy phone and Android 11 or later | Apple’s current support guidance documents Find Nearby on iPhone 15 and later for the described workflow |
| Out-of-range location | Galaxy Find Network, using opted-in Galaxy devices near the tag | Apple Find My network |
| Battery | Replaceable CR2032; Samsung claims up to 500 days in typical use and up to 40% more in Power Saving Mode | User-replaceable CR2032; the original technical specification does not give a comparable runtime figure |
| Water and dust rating | IP67; Samsung specifies up to 1 metre of fresh water for up to 30 minutes | IP67; Apple’s original specification defines up to 1 metre for up to 30 minutes under IEC 60529 |
The table combines manufacturer specifications, not a head-to-head laboratory test. Range, battery life, network updates and precision finding vary with walls, radio interference, phone model, software, surrounding devices and how often the tag is used.

Samsung Galaxy users
SmartTag2 is the straightforward choice when your everyday phone is a Samsung Galaxy. Samsung’s US product information says setup and remote-finding features require a Galaxy smartphone or tablet running Android 11 or later, at least 3 GB of free RAM, a Samsung account and registration with SmartThings Find. You must also opt in to SmartThings Find.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Samsung lists a broader Galaxy compatibility line that includes devices running Android 9 or higher. That line should not be read as a guarantee that every feature works on every listed device: the more detailed feature notes impose Android 11 and the free-RAM requirement. If you own an older Galaxy, check the feature-specific requirement rather than relying on the broad Android 9 statement.
iPhone and iPad users
AirTag belongs in Apple’s Find My ecosystem. Apple’s original AirTag technical specifications list an Apple ID, an iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 14.5 or later, or an iPad running iPadOS 14.5 or later. The original specification is not automatically the requirement for a newer AirTag generation.
Apple’s current support guidance for its newer product support says AirTag (2nd generation) requires iOS 26.2.1 or later for the documented Find Nearby workflow. Confirm the generation printed on the packaging or product listing and check your phone’s current iOS version before purchase. Do not apply the original AirTag’s iOS 14.5 requirement to a second-generation model without checking Apple’s current compatibility guidance.
Mixed Android-and-iPhone households
Neither product is a good choice if the person who must set up and manage the tracker uses a different platform. An iPhone user cannot treat SmartTag2 as a normal Find My accessory, and an Android user cannot set up and administer AirTag as a normal Find My item. A family may carry both phone types, but ownership, sharing and everyday management remain tied to the relevant Samsung or Apple account ecosystem.
What happens when the item is nearby?
SmartTag2: Bluetooth, sound and Compass View
When your Galaxy phone is close enough, SmartTag2 uses Bluetooth for a nearby search and can play its built-in buzzer. Samsung lists Bluetooth range of up to 120 metres without obstacles. That is a manufacturer maximum under unobstructed conditions, not a promise that a tag will remain reachable through several rooms, floors, vehicles or dense construction. Walls and other obstacles can reduce both range and locating accuracy.
Compass View adds an augmented direction-and-distance experience through ultra-wideband (UWB). It is conditional: your Galaxy phone must support UWB, and Samsung’s feature notes require Android 11 or later. A Galaxy phone that can run SmartThings Find is not necessarily a Galaxy phone that can provide Compass View.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
AirTag: Bluetooth, speaker, NFC and Precision Finding
AirTag uses Bluetooth for proximity finding and has a built-in speaker. If the tag is placed in Lost Mode, its NFC function can let a person with a compatible phone read the owner-provided contact information according to Apple’s Find My process. AirTag also uses UWB for Precision Finding on compatible Apple hardware.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Apple’s current support article documents Find Nearby on iPhone 15 and later for the workflow described there. That requirement is separate from the older original-AirTag setup minimum of iOS 14.5. Apple also warns that wall materials and objects between the phone and tag can affect nearby-finding performance.
Why precision finding sometimes seems wrong
- The phone may not contain the required UWB hardware even though the tracker appears in the app.
- Concrete, metal, vehicles, furniture and multiple walls can block or reflect radio signals.
- A tag hidden inside luggage or a drawer may be audible only after you are already close.
- Phone operating-system updates can change which models are supported for a particular finding workflow.
For a lost item in a house, both products are designed to narrow the search with a radio connection and a sound. Precision arrows are a convenience, not a substitute for checking the surrounding room and likely hiding places.
What happens when the tag is out of Bluetooth range?
Galaxy Find Network
SmartTag2 can be located beyond your phone’s direct Bluetooth range through Samsung’s Galaxy Find Network. Samsung describes a system in which opted-in Galaxy users’ devices can detect a nearby tag and relay its location to the owner. The practical result depends on whether participating Galaxy devices pass near the tag.
Apple Find My network
AirTag uses Apple’s Find My network in the same broad way: nearby Apple devices can help report the tag’s location to its owner. The Find My app can show a map location, provide directions and play a sound when the tag comes within suitable range.
There is no evidence-based universal network winner
The manufacturer descriptions establish how each network is intended to work, but they do not establish which network is denser or faster in every city, apartment building, airport or travel route. Local performance depends on the number and distribution of participating devices, radio conditions and how often the tag is moved. Choose the ecosystem that matches your phone rather than assuming one crowd network is universally superior.

Battery life, replacement and power-saving trade-offs
SmartTag2 battery claims
Samsung specifies a user-replaceable CR2032 coin cell and claims up to 500 days of battery life under typical use. Samsung also says Power Saving Mode can provide up to 40% more battery life, while limiting the tag to basic Bluetooth-finding functions. That extra endurance therefore trades away some remote and advanced capabilities; it is not a free performance improvement.
“Up to” is important. Frequent buzzer use, repeated location requests, temperature, signal conditions and other usage patterns can shorten runtime. Samsung’s number is a manufacturer specification, not an independently controlled comparison with AirTag.
AirTag battery information
Apple’s original AirTag technical specification lists a user-replaceable CR2032 coin cell but does not provide a directly comparable runtime figure on that page. Battery behavior can differ between generations, so use the specification for the exact AirTag model you are buying rather than importing a number from an older review.

A replacement CR2032 is an ownership item for later, not an add-on you normally need on the day of purchase.
Water resistance and physical attachment
IP67 in practical terms
Samsung rates SmartTag2 IP67 and specifies exposure to up to 1 metre of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. Samsung advises rinsing residue away and drying the tag after it gets wet. Salt water, chlorinated water, mud and repeated exposure can create conditions outside the stated test.
Apple’s original AirTag specification also lists IP67, defined as a maximum depth of 1 metre for up to 30 minutes under IEC 60529. Apple warns that water resistance can decrease through normal wear. An IP rating is not a guarantee that an aging tag will remain sealed after drops, damaged seals or repeated immersion.

Keys, bags and luggage
SmartTag2 cases are sold separately. Samsung describes silicone and rugged cases with a carabiner ring, which gives you a direct way to clip the tag to keys, a backpack or luggage. Include the case when calculating the final cost and check that the attachment does not cover the buzzer opening.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAirTag is a smooth disc, so a compatible key ring, loop or luggage holder is usually needed. Verify that the holder fits your AirTag generation. The holder is an attachment accessory, not part of the tracker’s wireless finding system.
Setup checklist before you buy
For SmartTag2
- Confirm that your phone or tablet is a Samsung Galaxy device.
- Check that it runs Android 11 or later and has at least 3 GB of free RAM for the detailed setup and finding features.
- Sign in to, or create, the required Samsung account.
- Opt in to SmartThings Find and register the tag there.
- If Compass View matters to you, verify that the exact Galaxy model has supported UWB hardware.
- Plan for a separate case or carabiner holder if the item has no pocket or loop.
For AirTag
- Confirm that the person who will manage the tag uses an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch compatible with the exact AirTag generation.
- For an original AirTag, Apple lists iOS 14.5 or later on iPhone or iPod touch and iPadOS 14.5 or later on iPad, plus an Apple ID.
- For AirTag (2nd generation), check Apple’s current support requirement; the cited Find Nearby guidance specifies iOS 26.2.1 or later.
- Add and manage the tag through Apple’s Find My ecosystem.
- If Precision Finding is important, verify UWB and model eligibility rather than assuming every iPhone supports it.
- Buy a generation-compatible holder if you need to attach the disc to keys or luggage.
Privacy, unwanted tracking and responsible use
These products are designed to locate belongings such as keys, bags and luggage. They should not be used to track a person or property without permission. A tracker hidden on someone else’s belongings can create a serious safety and privacy risk even when the owner claims a benign reason.
Apple provides guidance for unwanted-tracking notifications and for disabling a found tracker. Apple also says it worked with Google on an industry specification intended to alert people across iOS and Android when a compatible Bluetooth tracker appears to be moving with them. The cross-platform goal is important: switching phone brands should not remove every safety mechanism for people who may be followed by an unknown tag.
Samsung product material mentions unknown-tag alerts, but the official material considered here does not provide a comparably detailed, current Samsung safety procedure. Do not assume Samsung and Apple present identical alerts, timing or controls. If you find an unknown tracker, follow the instructions shown by your phone and the manufacturer’s current safety guidance; if you feel unsafe, contact local support or emergency services.

Common buying mistakes
Buying for the wrong phone
The most expensive mistake is treating the tracker as a generic Bluetooth accessory. Ecosystem account, setup and network participation matter more than the shape of the tag. Decide who will own and manage it, then match that person’s phone.

Confusing broad compatibility with every feature
SmartTag2’s broad Galaxy compatibility reference includes Android 9 or higher, while detailed feature notes require Android 11 and 3 GB of free RAM. AirTag’s original iOS 14.5 specification does not settle the requirements for a newer generation’s current Find Nearby workflow. Read the feature footnotes and generation-specific support page.
Assuming UWB is automatic
Compass View and Precision Finding require compatible UWB hardware on the phone. Bluetooth discovery can work while the directional experience is unavailable.
Reading maximum range as an indoor guarantee
SmartTag2’s 120-metre figure applies without obstacles. Indoor walls, metal and other objects can reduce the practical distance. Apple likewise warns that objects and wall materials affect Find Nearby.
Treating IP67 as permanent waterproofing
Both products’ ratings describe a controlled depth-and-time condition. Wear, impact, residue and repeated exposure can reduce protection. Dry a wet tag and avoid deliberately submerging it.
Which one should you buy?
Choose SmartTag2 when
- Your primary phone is a Samsung Galaxy and you already use, or are willing to use, a Samsung account and SmartThings Find.
- You want Samsung’s Galaxy Find Network for out-of-range reports.
- Your Galaxy model supports UWB and you specifically want Compass View.
- You value Samsung’s stated up-to-500-day typical-use battery claim or its optional Power Saving Mode.
- You want a case design with a carabiner ring and are comfortable buying that attachment separately.
Choose AirTag when
- Your primary phone is an iPhone or iPad and your belongings already live in Find My.
- You want Apple’s Find My network and the associated map, directions and sound workflow.
- Your compatible iPhone supports the Precision Finding or current Find Nearby feature you intend to use.
- You need NFC-based Lost Mode contact information for a found tag.
- You are prepared to verify the exact AirTag generation and its current iOS requirement.
Choose neither until you verify compatibility when
- The person managing the tracker uses an unsupported platform.
- You need one tag that can be fully administered interchangeably from Samsung Galaxy and iPhone.
- You are buying for a phone older than the detailed operating-system or hardware requirements.
- You need a guaranteed location update in a particular building or city; neither manufacturer specification proves that network will be best there.
Bottom line
SmartTag2 is the right starting point for a Samsung Galaxy owner; AirTag is the right starting point for an iPhone or iPad owner. Their core functions are similar—nearby Bluetooth finding, a sound, replaceable CR2032 batteries, IP67 protection and a crowd-assisted network—but setup, account ownership and advanced finding are ecosystem-specific. Verify the exact phone, operating system, UWB support and tracker generation before checkout, and treat network coverage and battery figures as manufacturer claims rather than universal guarantees.
