Set up a new Samsung Galaxy in this order: connect to Wi‑Fi, choose whether to copy data, sign in to Google, create a screen lock, add a Samsung account if you need its features, and confirm backup and restore options. If you use Smart Switch, Samsung supports wireless and USB transfers and recommends a wired connection for a large amount of data. Keep the old phone until you have checked the new phone’s contacts, photos, messages, files and essential apps.
Before you turn on the new Galaxy
A few minutes of preparation prevents the most common setup failures. Keep both phones nearby, unlock the old phone, and gather any account credentials you will need. If you are moving from an iPhone or iPad, have the Apple device available as well as the cable or adapter required for a wired connection.

- Charge both devices. Samsung’s general setup guidance says Smart Switch runs when both devices are at least 20% charged. A higher charge is sensible for a large transfer because the process can take a while and should not be interrupted.
- Do not erase the old phone yet. You need it for authentication codes and for checking anything that did not transfer.
- Know your Wi‑Fi password. The setup wizard normally asks you to join a wireless network before account sign-in and updates.
- Check the ports and cable. Wired Smart Switch requires a data-capable cable that fits both phones, or a suitable adapter. A charging-only cable may not transfer data.
- Decide whether you want a copy or a clean start. Smart Switch lets you select categories. You do not have to bring everything over.
Samsung’s instructions are written for US devices and screens can differ by model, carrier, country and One UI version. Treat the labels below as a route through the process, not a promise that every Galaxy will display identical wording.
Complete the initial setup wizard
1. Select language and region
Power on the Galaxy and choose the language shown on the welcome screen. Continue through the terms and basic prompts. The setup wizard is Samsung’s guided path for the first configuration; Samsung describes the sequence as quick and easy, but the available steps can change when you choose quick setup instead of manual setup.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
2. Connect to Wi‑Fi
Select your network, enter its password and wait for the phone to confirm the connection. Wi‑Fi is preferable during first-run setup because account sign-in, backup restoration and a Smart Switch transfer can consume substantial mobile data. If you cannot connect immediately, look for the option to continue and add the network later in Settings, although some setup steps may remain unavailable until you are online.
3. Handle SIM or mobile-network setup
Your phone may offer SIM or mobile-network activation during setup, or leave it for later. The exact choices depend on the handset, carrier and country. Follow the instructions for the SIM or eSIM supplied with your device; do not assume that an eSIM QR flow or a particular activation screen exists on every Galaxy model.
Choose between copying data and starting fresh
The key decision is whether to use Smart Switch or configure the phone manually. Smart Switch can copy selected content from another Galaxy or Android phone and from an iPhone or iPad. Manual setup is useful when the old phone is unavailable, when you want a clean app list, or when you prefer to restore only the information already stored in your accounts.

- Choose Smart Switch when you want contacts, photos, messages, files or other supported categories moved in one guided operation.
- Choose manual setup when you want to avoid old apps and settings, or when the old device cannot be connected.
- Use a selective transfer when you need personal data but not every application. Review the category selection before starting rather than accepting an all-content option automatically.
A transfer-complete message means Smart Switch finished the selected operation; it does not guarantee that every application’s private data, login session or device-specific setting will behave identically on the new phone. Plan a verification pass before you retire the old device.
Smart Switch: pick the connection that fits your transfer
| Method | Best fit | What you need | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wireless | A modest transfer or a setup where both phones can stay close together | Both devices powered on, unlocked when prompted, and connected through the Smart Switch flow | Samsung supports wireless transfer but does not publish a universal speed or completion-time figure. |
| USB cable | A large amount of data | A compatible data cable and ports or adapters for both phones | Samsung recommends a wired connection for a large transfer. A cable may be needed only if you do not already have a compatible one. |
| External storage | Devices or situations where a direct phone-to-phone link is impractical | Compatible USB or SD storage and any required adapter | Smart Switch offers encryption choices for data moved through SD cards or USB storage. |
| Computer | A transfer that you want to stage through a computer | A compatible computer, storage and connection arrangement | The computer route has its own setup requirements; availability can vary by device and software version. |
For a large photo or video library, wired transfer is the conservative choice because it avoids relying on a wireless link for the entire operation. Samsung’s general support material recommends wired transfer for large amounts of data, but it does not state a guaranteed speed advantage or a standard transfer time.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Run a Smart Switch transfer step by step
From another Galaxy or Android phone
- Open the Smart Switch transfer option from the new Galaxy’s setup flow when it appears. If you skipped it, look for Smart Switch in the phone’s Samsung apps or Settings; the exact menu path varies by model and software version.
- On the old phone, open Smart Switch when prompted and identify it as the sending device. On the new phone, choose to receive data.
- Select wireless or cable transfer. Keep the phones close together for wireless operation. For cable transfer, connect both phones with a compatible data cable and approve any permission prompt.
- Review the categories Smart Switch offers. Select the contacts, messages, photos, videos, files, apps or other supported items you actually want.
- Start the transfer and leave both phones connected and sufficiently charged. Avoid using either device or disconnecting a cable until Smart Switch reports completion.
- On the new Galaxy, open the transferred categories and verify representative items before you reset the old phone.
From an iPhone or iPad
- Start Smart Switch on the Galaxy and choose the iPhone or iPad source option.
- Select a wireless route if offered, or connect the Apple device with a compatible cable and adapter.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to authorize the connection and choose the categories available for transfer.
- Allow the operation to finish, then check contacts, photos, messages and files individually. Apple and Android apps are not interchangeable packages, so expect to reinstall some applications from Google Play and sign in again.
Samsung documents Smart Switch for transfers from both Galaxy or Android devices and iPhone or iPad devices, but the categories and prompts can differ. If a desired item is not listed, keep the original device until you have another way to export or retrieve it.
Use external storage or a computer when appropriate
Smart Switch can also work through compatible external storage or a computer. These routes are useful when a direct connection is unavailable, but they add another device, cable or storage dependency. Confirm that the storage format, adapter and computer software are supported before starting. When using SD or USB storage, review Smart Switch’s encryption setting rather than assuming the removable device is protected by the Galaxy’s screen lock.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSign in to Google and choose the restore path
Google account
During setup, sign in to the Google account you plan to use on the phone. Samsung says this account provides access to Google apps and the Play Store. The wizard may also present Google preferences such as location and basic device backup. Read each option and choose the settings that match how you want the phone to operate.
If you have more than one Google account, use the one that owns the apps, contacts or backups you expect to restore. Adding another account later is possible, but selecting the wrong account during first-run restore can make it appear that a backup is missing.
Restore from Google Drive or Google One
Samsung’s model-specific support instructions describe Google Drive restoration as part of the initial Setup Wizard. If you intend to restore that backup, pay attention to the restore screen instead of skipping through setup and assuming it can always be selected later. The exact wording and available services depend on the Galaxy model, region and software version.

A restore is not the same as a Smart Switch copy. A cloud restore may bring back account-backed settings and application information, while Smart Switch moves selected device content. Decide which source should be authoritative for each category so you do not create duplicate contacts or reinstall apps unnecessarily.
Add a Samsung account only if you need its features
Samsung says a Samsung account unlocks features that require Samsung sign-in. Add one during setup if you use those services; otherwise, you can skip the prompt and add the account later. The path and list of account-dependent features vary by model and region, so the absence of a particular option does not necessarily indicate a setup error.
Use an email address and password you can recover. Keep the old phone available if Samsung asks for an approval or verification code during sign-in.
Protect the phone with a screen lock
Set a screen lock before you begin normal use. Samsung lists face recognition, PIN, pattern and password as choices. Select a method you can reliably remember and enter; a complicated lock that you forget can delay access to the phone and to your accounts.
- PIN: A numeric code that is quick to enter and easy to use with a case or one hand.
- Pattern: A drawn unlock sequence that some people find faster to remember.
- Password: A text-based option for people who prefer a longer secret.
- Face recognition: A convenient biometric option where offered, but keep the underlying PIN, pattern or password because the phone may require it after a restart or security event.
The screen lock and Smart Switch transfer protection are separate decisions. A lock protects ordinary access to the phone; Smart Switch can additionally use an authentication-code option for transfers and encryption choices for data moved with SD cards or USB storage.

Turn on transfer protection before moving sensitive data
Smart Switch includes an optional authentication-code setting for transfers. Enable it when you want an extra confirmation step between the sending and receiving devices, especially if you are moving personal messages, documents or photos. Enter the code only on the devices involved in your transfer.
For external-storage transfers, review the available encryption choices. Encryption protects the copied data while it is stored on the removable medium, but it does not replace a strong screen lock or the need to keep the storage device under your control.
Verify the new Galaxy before wiping the old one
Make verification a deliberate final stage, not a quick glance at the home screen. Work through the following list while the old phone is still usable:
- Contacts: Search for several people, including one whose number or email address is important.
- Photos and videos: Open recent and older items and check that they are readable, not merely represented by thumbnails.
- Messages: Confirm recent conversations and any threads you need for work, travel or two-factor codes.
- Files: Open documents, downloads and recordings that you expect to use.
- Apps: Check that essential apps are installed and sign in to them. Some app data and sessions will require separate recovery.
- Accounts: Confirm that the intended Google account and, if used, Samsung account are present.
- Backup: Revisit the backup and restore settings and confirm that the selected service is enabled according to your preference.
- Calls and messages: Place a test call and send a test message after SIM or mobile-network activation.
Only after this check should you sign out of the old phone, remove its SIM or eSIM as appropriate, erase its contents and prepare it for trade-in or recycling. If anything is missing, the old device is your recovery copy.

Smart Switch cannot see the old phone
- Unlock both phones and reopen Smart Switch on each one.
- For a cable transfer, disconnect and reconnect the cable, then try a different compatible data cable or adapter if available.
- For wireless transfer, keep the phones close together and confirm that the connection step was accepted on both screens.
- If the phones still cannot connect, finish basic setup manually and try Smart Switch again from the new phone’s available apps or settings.
The transfer stops or reports insufficient charge
Reconnect both phones to power, return to Smart Switch and repeat the operation. Samsung’s setup guidance uses 20% charge on both devices as the threshold for Smart Switch operation; a larger margin reduces the chance that one phone powers down during a long copy.

Google Drive restore does not appear
Check that you signed in with the Google account that contains the backup and that you are still in the initial Setup Wizard. Samsung’s A-series instructions place Google Drive restoration in that first-run flow, while menus and behavior can vary on other models. If you skipped the screen, review the phone’s backup or account settings and use the original device or cloud service to recover anything not restored automatically.
Some apps or data are missing
Compare the missing item with the Smart Switch categories you selected. Re-run the transfer for an omitted category where possible, reinstall the app from Google Play, or use the app’s own sign-in and backup process. Do not erase the old phone until you have confirmed that the missing information is either recoverable or no longer needed.
Model, carrier and region limits to keep in mind
There is no single universal Galaxy setup screen. Samsung’s support material combines general instructions with examples for particular A-series devices, and it is based on US support pages. Carrier activation, eSIM support, QR-based setup, account features, backup services and exact menu names can differ by country, model and One UI release.
When a label in this checklist does not appear, look for the closest equivalent in the welcome wizard, Settings, Smart Switch or your carrier’s activation instructions. Do not force a menu path from another Galaxy model, and do not assume that a feature documented for one region is available on your phone.
