After enabling advanced features on a Samsung Galaxy phone, start with measurement rather than blanket restrictions. Check which apps are using battery in the background, then apply sleep rules only to apps that can tolerate delayed syncing. Use Power saving as a temporary endurance mode, choose a battery-protection limit if your model supports it, and tighten security with Auto Blocker and a permission audit. Menu names and availability vary by Galaxy model, region, Android release, and One UI version, so use Settings search when a path differs.
Measure battery use before changing anything
Open Settings > Battery and device care > Battery. On some Galaxy phones the wording or placement differs; search Settings for battery if necessary. Review the battery-usage list and look for apps with unusually high background activity. This baseline tells you whether the problem is one misbehaving app, many rarely used apps, or overall high power demand.

Record the apps that appear near the top and note whether you rely on them for immediate alerts, location updates, health data, wearable connections, authentication codes, or work synchronization. Do not put every app into deep sleep before checking this list: a restriction that saves background power can also stop the background work you need.
- High foreground use: the app is consuming power while you actively use it; sleeping rules will not solve most of that drain.
- High background use: the app is doing work while you are not using it; background limits may help.
- Unexpected use: update the app, restart the phone, and check its permissions before imposing an aggressive restriction.
Set background limits selectively
Go to Settings > Battery and device care > Battery > Background usage limits. Samsung’s battery guidance recommends starting with unused apps and then adding exceptions only when a real need exists.

Turn on “Put unused apps to sleep”
Enable Put unused apps to sleep to let the phone identify apps you rarely open and reduce their background activity. This is a broad, low-maintenance setting, but it can still affect an app you use infrequently for time-sensitive work. After enabling it, check notification behavior for any app that matters to you.
Use “Sleeping apps” for occasional-use software
Add apps to Sleeping apps when they do not need to refresh continuously but should still be able to run periodically. Examples might include a seldom-used shopping, travel, or reference app. Sleeping is less restrictive than deep sleep, yet it can still delay updates depending on the app’s design.
Reserve “Deep sleeping apps” for apps that need no background work
Deep sleeping apps do not run in the background until you open them. Samsung Canada’s support wording is explicit: Deep sleeping apps: Apps with deep sleep will not run in the background. You will receive app updates and notifications only when you open the app.
Use deep sleep for games, infrequently used tools, archived services, or apps whose alerts you can safely miss. Do not use it for messaging, two-factor authentication, navigation, health tracking, wearable companions, or work-critical software that must synchronize while closed.
Keep “Never sleeping apps” short
Never sleeping apps provides an exception for apps that must remain active. Add only the services that demonstrably lose needed alerts or synchronization under sleeping rules. Samsung warns that exceptions consume more background power, so an oversized list can erase the benefit of your other limits.

Protect notifications before tightening restrictions
Before moving an app into Sleeping or Deep sleeping, ask four questions:
- Must the app alert me while it is closed?
- Does it synchronize data or credentials in the background?
- Does it maintain a wearable, health, navigation, or location session?
- Will a delayed update create a safety, financial, or work problem?
If the answer to any question is yes, leave the app unrestricted or test the less restrictive Sleeping category first. Send yourself a test message, sign-in code, or reminder after each change. This isolates the setting responsible if notifications stop.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse Power saving as a deliberate mode
Turn on Settings > Battery and device care > Battery > Power saving when you need longer endurance, such as during travel or when you cannot recharge. Samsung describes Power saving as a mode that can restrict background Wi-Fi and mobile data and disable demanding features such as Always On Display. Location services may also be limited.
Because those restrictions can change how apps behave, verify your essentials immediately after enabling the mode:
- Open navigation and confirm that location updates continue.
- Send and receive a message or authentication code.
- Check that required work or cloud synchronization completes.
- Confirm that a connected wearable still receives the data you expect.
Disable Power saving when you need normal background connectivity again. It is a situational mode, not a replacement for identifying an app with abnormal battery use.

Enable Auto optimize daily when your phone offers it
Samsung provides an automation that can perform routine optimization while the phone is not in use. Open Settings > Battery and device care > More options > Automation > Auto optimize daily, then enable it if the option appears. The exact menu can differ by One UI release. This setting is useful for hands-off maintenance, but it does not replace reviewing the battery-usage screen when drain is unusual.

Choose a battery-protection mode while charging
Supported Galaxy phones running One UI 6.1 or later may show Battery protection controls. These change charging behavior rather than reducing active-use battery drain. Samsung’s documentation describes three modes:
| Mode | Charging behavior | Best fit | Availability note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | Charges to 100%, then pauses until the level falls to 95% before charging again. | Users who want a full charge while reducing continuous topping-up at 100%. | Supported models only; menu wording varies. |
| Adaptive | Uses Maximum while you are asleep, then switches to Basic before your expected wake time. | Overnight charging when you want a lower ceiling during most of the night and a full charge by morning. | Requires a supported One UI 6.1 or later model and a usable sleep schedule. |
| Maximum | Stops charging when the battery reaches 80%. | Users who can finish the day without a full charge and prefer a fixed ceiling. | Samsung documents the 80% ceiling for supported One UI 6.1 or later Galaxy models. |
To find the control, search Settings for battery protection. If it is absent, your model, region, Android version, or One UI release may not support it. Do not treat the 80% figure as a promise of longer daily runtime; it is the selected charging ceiling.
Improve security with Auto Blocker
Open Settings > Security and privacy > Auto Blocker and turn it on. Samsung says Auto Blocker blocks apps downloaded from unverified sources outside the Play Store or Galaxy Store. This protects against a common sideloading route with little day-to-day battery trade-off.
If you intentionally install software from another source, confirm that you understand the security consequence before changing the setting. Re-enable Auto Blocker afterward if the installation was temporary, and remove installers you no longer need.

Audit sensitive app permissions
Open your phone’s privacy dashboard or permission manager and review access for each app. Samsung’s safety guidance covers these categories:
- Camera
- Microphone
- Location
- Contacts
- Photos and videos
- Messages
- Nearby devices
For every permission, compare the access to the app’s stated function. Revoke permissions that are not necessary, then open the app and test its core task. A camera app may need camera and photos access; a simple calculator generally does not need either. If revoking a permission breaks a feature you actually use, grant it back deliberately rather than leaving every permission enabled by default.
Location deserves special attention. A navigation or safety app may require location while in use or in the background, whereas a game or reader often does not. Removing location access can improve privacy, but it can also stop route updates or geofenced reminders. Test the specific workflow after each change.

| Setting | Battery benefit | Notification reliability | Privacy or security effect | Reversibility and availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Put unused apps to sleep | Reduces background activity from rarely opened apps; no fixed savings percentage is established. | May delay updates for apps selected by the system. | None directly. | Easy to toggle; labels vary by model and One UI version. |
| Sleeping apps | Moderate reduction for apps that do not need constant refresh. | Updates can be delayed. | None directly. | Per-app and reversible. |
| Deep sleeping apps | Strongest background restriction; the app does not run until opened. | Alerts and updates arrive only when you open the app. | None directly. | Per-app and reversible, but not suitable for essential alerts. |
| Never sleeping apps | Usually reduces or removes the savings for listed apps. | Best reliability for background work. | None directly. | Use sparingly; available options vary. |
| Power saving | Can extend endurance by limiting background connectivity and heavy features. | May delay sync; verify messaging and navigation. | Location services may be limited. | Quickly reversible; behavior differs by model. |
| Auto optimize daily | Automates routine optimization while the device is idle. | Not intended as a notification-control setting. | None directly. | Only present on supported software. |
| Battery protection | Changes charging behavior, not active-use drain. | Does not directly govern notifications. | None directly. | Basic, Adaptive, and Maximum require supported models; Maximum uses an 80% ceiling. |
| Auto Blocker | Little direct effect on battery use. | Does not normally alter notifications from installed apps. | Blocks apps from unverified sources outside the Play Store or Galaxy Store. | Toggle in Security and privacy when supported. |
| Permission review | May reduce unwanted location or sensor activity, but no fixed saving is established. | Can affect features that depend on the revoked permission. | Directly reduces unnecessary access to sensors and personal data. | Per-app and reversible. |
A practical order for changing the settings
- Capture a baseline: review Battery and device care > Battery and note high background users.
- Apply the lightest restriction first: enable Put unused apps to sleep.
- Classify individual apps: place occasional-use apps in Sleeping apps; reserve Deep sleeping apps for apps that need no closed-state alerts or sync.
- Protect essentials: keep messaging, authentication, navigation, health, wearable, and work-critical apps out of deep sleep.
- Test: trigger a notification, sync, or navigation session after every material change.
- Use Power saving only when appropriate: check Wi-Fi, mobile data, location, Always On Display, and essential alerts.
- Automate maintenance: enable Auto optimize daily if available.
- Set charging behavior: choose Basic, Adaptive, or Maximum under Battery protection when supported.
- Harden installation security: enable Auto Blocker.
- Review privacy: audit camera, microphone, location, contacts, photos and videos, messages, and nearby-device access; revoke unnecessary permissions and retest.
Troubleshoot the common failures
Notifications arrive late
Check whether the affected app is in Sleeping or Deep sleeping apps. Remove it from those lists, or add it to Never sleeping apps only if timely background delivery is essential. Also test with Power saving disabled, because that mode can restrict background data.
Recommended Free Tools
Navigation or wearable updates stop
Remove the app from Deep sleeping apps, review its location and nearby-device permissions, and test again. If Power saving is on, disable it for the trip or session and verify location updates.

The battery still drains quickly
Return to the battery-usage screen rather than adding more blanket limits. Identify whether one app remains high in background use, whether the drain occurs during active screen time, and whether a recently changed permission or feature is involved. Sleeping rules cannot correct foreground use by themselves.
A menu or mode is missing
Samsung states that names, paths, and availability vary by model, region, Android release, and One UI version. Use Settings search for background usage limits, power saving, battery protection, Auto Blocker, or permissions. A missing Battery protection mode generally means the phone does not support that feature on its current software.
An app breaks after a permission change
Open the permission manager, restore only the permission required for the broken task, and test again. Avoid granting unrelated categories simply to make the error disappear.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What you can reasonably expect
These controls let you trade background responsiveness for endurance and data access for privacy. Deep sleep and Power saving can improve endurance, but both can delay background work. Auto Blocker and permission reviews strengthen security and privacy with little direct battery trade-off. Battery-protection modes control charging behavior on supported phones, while no controlled, model-independent percentage for expected battery savings has been published by Samsung in the cited guidance. Treat your own battery-usage screen and notification tests as the decision data for your specific Galaxy model.
