Samsung Galaxy Says No SIM? 5 Checks to Find the Cause

A “No SIM card detected” alert does not necessarily mean your Samsung Galaxy is broken. The cause may be a temporary software error, a SIM that is damaged or not seated correctly, mobile network settings, or a carrier activation or account issue. Check whether the phone recognizes the SIM, then work through the steps below to narrow down the cause.

First, check whether the Galaxy recognizes the SIM

Open Settings > About phone > Status information > SIM card status and look for your carrier under Network. If the carrier is missing, the phone may not be reading the SIM or the line may not be active. Menu labels and paths can vary by Galaxy model and software version.

A “No SIM card detected” message points first to SIM recognition, seating, card condition, or device hardware. “Emergency calls only” or no service can also occur when a SIM or eSIM is inactive, or when there is a carrier, account, or network issue. The message alone does not establish which cause applies.

Try the simplest fixes first

Restart the phone

A temporary system error can keep a SIM from being recognized. Restart from the on-screen power menu. If the screen is unresponsive, Samsung’s US guidance says to hold the Side and Volume down buttons for more than seven seconds; button combinations can differ by model.

Power off and reseat a physical SIM

  1. Turn the phone off before removing the SIM tray.
  2. Use a SIM eject pin in the tray hole and pull the tray out carefully. Do not bend or force the tray.
  3. Check that the Nano-SIM is positioned according to the tray or device markings. Contact orientation varies by Galaxy model, so do not assume one orientation fits every device.
  4. Push the tray all the way back in, then turn the phone on.

If the contacts look dirty, Samsung advises gently wiping them with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid touching the metal contacts or using metal objects to clean them. An eject pin may help access a physical SIM tray, but it will not address eSIM activation, a carrier block, a damaged card, or a device fault.

Use another SIM to narrow down the cause

If you can, compare with another active SIM in the Galaxy, or try the suspect SIM in another compatible phone. These tests are useful clues, not conclusive diagnoses: a SIM can work in one device while an account or device-specific issue remains.

Test result What it suggests Next step
The suspect SIM works in another compatible phone, but not in this Galaxy. The Galaxy’s SIM reader, tray, settings, or compatibility may be involved; the test does not by itself identify which. Continue with the network reset below. If a known working, active SIM also fails in the Galaxy, contact Samsung service.
Another active SIM works in this Galaxy. The original SIM or its carrier account is more likely to be the issue. Ask the carrier to check activation or replace the SIM if needed.
Neither SIM is recognized by the Galaxy. A device, tray, or settings issue becomes more plausible, but the test is not a definitive diagnosis. Try the network reset; contact Samsung service if a known working SIM still is not recognized.

Reset mobile network settings if the basic checks fail

Go to Settings > General management > Reset > Reset mobile network settings. Read the confirmation prompt before proceeding: this removes saved mobile network configuration so the phone can reconnect using default settings. It is not a repair for a damaged SIM or a carrier block. Samsung distinguishes this option from resetting Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings.

When to contact your carrier or Samsung

Contact the carrier about activation, protection, or replacement

Ask your carrier to check the line and SIM if activation is incomplete, the SIM may be damaged, or the problem persists across compatible phones. Contact the carrier for eSIM activation during initial setup. Samsung also notes that some carriers’ SIM protection services can prevent activation on a new device; the carrier must disable that protection if it is enabled. Samsung’s support guidance says, “Most issues with your SIM card will need to be resolved by your carrier.”

Samsung Members diagnostics may also help if the app is installed: open Members > Support > Get started > SIM and follow the on-screen directions. Availability and menu labels can vary by device and region.
