Buy the iPhone 17 Pro Max if you need a flagship now. Apple’s phone is announced, fully specified and shipping, while Samsung has not officially announced a Galaxy S27 Ultra as of October 18, 2026. If you specifically need an S Pen, Android with DeX, or Samsung’s Ultra-style long-zoom camera system, wait for Samsung’s announcement or buy the released Galaxy S26 Ultra instead. There is no reliable S27 Ultra price, camera specification, battery capacity or release date to use in a purchase comparison yet.
The short answer
This is not a normal two-phone comparison because only one of the phones is a confirmed product. Apple announced the iPhone 17 Pro Max on September 9, 2025, and it went on sale September 19, 2025. Samsung’s official 2026 release information covers the Galaxy S26 series; it does not document a Galaxy S27 Ultra. Any S27 Ultra renders, specification lists, prices or launch dates circulating elsewhere should be treated as unconfirmed until Samsung publishes primary documentation.

That makes the buying decision straightforward:
- Choose the iPhone 17 Pro Max when you need a premium phone immediately, prefer iOS and Apple services, or care most about Apple’s documented video and camera workflow.
- Wait for the S27 Ultra only if Samsung’s S Pen, Android customization, DeX desktop mode or Ultra telephoto approach is more important than buying now.
- Buy the Galaxy S26 Ultra if you want Samsung hardware today and do not want to wait for an unannounced model.
Availability and certainty
| Question | iPhone 17 Pro Max | Galaxy S27 Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| Official announcement | September 9, 2025 | Not announced by Samsung as of October 18, 2026 |
| Availability | Available since September 19, 2025 | Not established |
| Starting price | $1,199 in the United States with 256GB | Not established |
| Display specification | 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR, ProMotion up to 120Hz | Not established |
| Camera specification | Documented three-camera 48MP Fusion system | Not established |
| Battery capacity | Apple does not present a capacity in the cited launch material | Not established |
A future Samsung announcement could change every unknown cell. Until that happens, a table presenting S27 Ultra numbers as official is misleading rather than useful.

Display
The iPhone 17 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz. Apple rates outdoor brightness at up to 3,000 nits. The combination is aimed at people who read, edit photos, watch HDR video and use the phone outdoors; the 120Hz mode also allows smoother scrolling and animation than a conventional 60Hz panel.

- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Camera hardware
Apple specifies three 48MP Fusion rear cameras and up to 8x optical-quality zoom. The front camera is an 18MP Center Stage camera. “Optical-quality” is Apple’s term for the highest-quality zoom modes available through the combined lens and computational system; it should not be interpreted as a promise of a single 8x optical telephoto lens.
For buyers who record a lot of video, the relevant advantage is not just megapixel count. Apple positions the Pro Max around a consistent multi-camera system and video features that work within iOS and Apple’s media workflow. The published specifications establish the camera hardware and zoom ceiling, but they do not provide a laboratory comparison against an S27 Ultra that does not yet exist.
Battery and charging
Apple says the iPhone 17 Pro Max has the best battery life ever offered in an iPhone. The company attributes that claim to the unibody design’s larger battery space, the A19 Pro chip and power management in iOS 26. Apple also says the phone can reach 50 percent charge in 20 minutes when used with an optional 40W Dynamic Power Adapter capable of 60W maximum output.

What is known about Samsung’s Ultra alternative
The released Galaxy S26 Ultra is the useful baseline
Samsung announced the Galaxy S26 Ultra on February 25, 2026, with general availability beginning March 11, 2026. Its official specifications provide the clearest picture of what Samsung’s current Ultra formula looks like, but none of these figures should be assigned to the unannounced S27 Ultra.
| Galaxy S26 Ultra specification | Samsung’s documented figure |
|---|---|
| Display | 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X with 120Hz refresh rate |
| Weight | 214g |
| Battery | 5,000mAh |
| Main camera | 200MP wide |
| Ultrawide camera | 50MP |
| Telephoto cameras | 50MP 5x telephoto and 10MP 3x telephoto |
| Maximum stated zoom | Up to 100x digital zoom |
| Input and desktop features | S Pen support and Samsung DeX |
The S26 Ultra is therefore a real, purchasable Samsung comparison point. It demonstrates the type of hardware Samsung may continue to develop, but it does not prove the S27 Ultra will retain the same sensors, battery, weight, zoom levels or software features.

Camera and zoom: which approach fits you?
Choose the iPhone approach for documented video and a simpler pro workflow
The iPhone 17 Pro Max’s three 48MP Fusion cameras are designed as one integrated system. That is attractive if you move between lenses while recording, edit on Apple devices, or want a clearly documented front camera and optical-quality zoom range. Apple’s published material gives buyers a known specification rather than a prediction.
Choose Samsung’s Ultra approach for long-range flexibility
The S26 Ultra’s two dedicated telephoto cameras, including a 50MP 5x unit and a 10MP 3x unit, provide more explicit focal-length choices than the iPhone specification lists. Its 200MP wide camera and 50MP ultrawide also emphasize high-resolution framing and cropping. Samsung states up to 100x digital zoom, but digital zoom is not equivalent to optical detail: at extreme magnifications, processing, light and subject stability have a major effect on the result.
If photographing distant signs, wildlife or stage performers is your priority, the documented S26 Ultra is the safer Samsung purchase than waiting for an S27 specification that may change. If your priority is dependable video capture and an established Apple workflow, the iPhone is the lower-risk choice.
Battery life and charging
Do not compare the iPhone’s battery-life claim with a guessed S27 capacity. Apple makes a complete endurance claim but does not use the cited launch material to provide a capacity figure. Samsung officially lists a 5,000mAh battery for the S26 Ultra; that number is a physical capacity, not a direct promise that it lasts longer than the iPhone.
| Battery question | What can be stated confidently |
|---|---|
| Which lasts longer? | No fair S27-versus-iPhone conclusion is possible before Samsung publishes S27 hardware and testing information. Apple claims the best battery life in an iPhone; S26 capacity alone does not establish endurance. |
| Fast charging | iPhone 17 Pro Max: Apple says 50% in 20 minutes with the optional 40W Dynamic Power Adapter, rated up to 60W. |
| S27 charging | Not established. |
| Known Samsung capacity | Galaxy S26 Ultra: 5,000mAh. |
For a buyer who spends most of the day away from a socket, compare independent tests performed under similar conditions after the S27 launches. Until then, Apple’s claim is the only current, model-specific endurance statement in this matchup.
Operating system, S Pen and desktop use
Why iOS may be the better fit
The iPhone 17 Pro Max runs iOS 26 and integrates with Apple’s services and devices. It is the more predictable choice for someone already using Apple hardware, relying on iOS applications, or producing video inside Apple’s ecosystem. The phone’s published camera and charging information is available now, so there is less uncertainty about what you are buying.

Why Samsung may be worth waiting for
Samsung’s current Ultra model supports the S Pen and DeX. The S Pen matters if you annotate documents, handwrite notes, mark up screenshots or use a precise stylus instead of a finger. DeX matters if you want to connect the phone to a monitor and use a desktop-style interface. Those are meaningful workflow differences, not minor specification advantages.
However, the S Pen and DeX are documented here for the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Samsung has not confirmed that the S27 Ultra will include either feature, so treat them as reasons to consider Samsung’s current model or wait for an official S27 announcement—not as confirmed S27 specifications.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Price, storage and value
The iPhone 17 Pro Max starts at $1,199 in the United States with 256GB. That is a confirmed launch price, not a temporary promotion. Apple announced the price in September 2025, and the phone became available the same month.
Samsung’s S27 Ultra price and storage tiers are unknown. Do not use retailer placeholders, leaked “starting prices” or converted prices from another country as a purchasing fact. Samsung could alter storage options, regional pricing, launch promotions or trade-in offers when it announces the phone.
If you need a firm budget today, the iPhone is the only option in this comparison with a published U.S. starting price. If your budget depends on Samsung’s eventual price, waiting is rational—but set a decision date so an indefinite wait does not replace a real buying plan.
Who should buy each phone?
Buy the iPhone 17 Pro Max now if:
- You need a premium phone immediately rather than an announced-later product.
- You already use Apple services or devices and want the least disruptive upgrade.
- You value a documented 6.9-inch, 120Hz display with up to 3,000-nit outdoor brightness.
- You want Apple’s three-camera 48MP Fusion system, 18MP Center Stage front camera and published up-to-8x optical-quality zoom.
- You want Apple’s stated best-ever iPhone battery life and have access to the optional 40W adapter for the advertised rapid-charge result.
- You can accept the $1,199 U.S. starting price for 256GB.
Wait for the Galaxy S27 Ultra if:
- You specifically require an S Pen or DeX-style workflow and do not want to buy the S26 Ultra.
- You prefer Android and Samsung’s software approach strongly enough to tolerate an unknown launch date and price.
- You want to see whether Samsung changes its Ultra camera system, battery, display or charging hardware before committing.
- You are comfortable making the purchase only after Samsung publishes official specifications and regional pricing.
Buy the Galaxy S26 Ultra instead if:
- You want Samsung hardware now, with an official 6.9-inch 120Hz display and 5,000mAh battery.
- You need a documented S Pen and DeX phone today.
- You prioritize a 200MP main camera, 50MP ultrawide, two telephotos and Samsung’s stated 100x digital-zoom mode.
- You would rather evaluate a real product than make a decision using S27 rumors.
How to evaluate the S27 announcement when it arrives
When Samsung publishes its S27 Ultra product page, check these items before comparing it with the iPhone:
- Confirm the release region and date. A Korean or U.S. announcement may not establish availability or pricing in your country.
- Record every camera’s focal length and sensor resolution. “AI zoom” or a large digital-zoom number does not replace dedicated optical telephoto hardware.
- Check battery capacity and charging requirements. Capacity, charger inclusion and charging time are separate facts.
- Verify S Pen and DeX support on the exact model. Do not assume a feature from the S26 Ultra carries over.
- Compare storage tiers at matching prices. A lower entry price can hide less included storage, while a higher-capacity iPhone may cost more than the advertised base model.
- Look for independent battery and camera testing. Manufacturer brightness, battery and zoom claims use different conditions and are not automatically comparable.
Bottom line for October 2026
The iPhone 17 Pro Max is the responsible recommendation for a flagship purchase today because it is available, specified and priced. The Galaxy S27 Ultra is not yet a confirmed retail product, so no honest comparison can declare it faster, longer-lasting, cheaper or better at photography. Wait only when Samsung’s S Pen, Android/DeX workflow or potential Ultra camera hardware is worth accepting that uncertainty. Otherwise, buy the iPhone now—or choose the documented Galaxy S26 Ultra if Samsung’s current feature set is the priority.
