If you want Android, an included S Pen, a built-in privacy screen feature, and two optical telephoto cameras, choose the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. If you prefer iOS, rely on Apple devices and services, or want a variable-aperture main camera and MagSafe, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the better fit. Their US reported starting list prices are nearly identical, so ecosystem and the features you will actually use matter more than the name on the box.
Here, “iPhone” means Apple’s current large-screen flagship, the iPhone 18 Pro Max—not every iPhone model. Both phones have 6.9-inch, 120Hz displays and advanced camera systems; neither is the universal winner.

Specifications and launch prices are reported figures, not measurements or live retail quotes. Samsung announced general availability for the S26 series in the US on March 11, 2026. Prices and configurations can vary by country, retailer, and date. Samsung’s US announcement, TechRadar’s comparison, and Apple’s specifications provide the cited figures.

Choose Samsung if lower weight matters
Both phones have a 6.9-inch screen, but the S26 Ultra is listed at 214g and the iPhone 18 Pro Max at 249g—a 35g difference. That may matter if you carry your phone all day or often hold it for long stretches. The Samsung measures 78.1 × 163.6 × 7.9mm, according to Samsung’s US announcement; dimensions alone do not establish which phone will feel more comfortable in your hand.

Choose by display priorities, not a single brightness number
Samsung lists a QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with adaptive 1–120Hz refresh and a 2,600-nit peak. The comparison reports the iPhone’s 6.9-inch OLED panel at 1–120Hz and a 3,000-nit peak. These are reported specifications, not like-for-like measurements made for this comparison. Samsung’s higher cited pixel density and built-in Privacy Display may matter more to some people than the iPhone’s higher cited peak brightness.
Which camera system suits your photography?
Pick Samsung for two dedicated optical telephoto levels
The Galaxy S26 Ultra has separate 3x and 5x telephoto cameras, alongside its 200MP wide and 50MP ultrawide cameras. That gives you two dedicated optical zoom perspectives rather than relying on one telephoto camera for those ranges.

Pick iPhone for variable aperture and Apple’s camera features
The iPhone 18 Pro Max has a 48MP main camera with variable aperture, plus a 48MP ultrawide and a 48MP 4x telephoto. Variable aperture gives the main camera control over incoming light and depth of field. Whether that or Samsung’s extra telephoto level produces results you prefer depends on the photos and video you take; megapixel counts and zoom labels do not prove overall image quality.
If camera quality is decisive, compare sample photos and video from the actual situations you care about—such as indoor motion, portraits, distant subjects, or night scenes—rather than choosing from hardware numbers alone.

Which software and ecosystem should guide your choice?
Choose Galaxy for Android flexibility and the S Pen
The S26 Ultra runs Android and includes an S Pen, making it the natural fit if you want a stylus for notes, markup, or other supported tasks. It also has Samsung’s built-in Privacy Display. Samsung says the S26 series will receive seven years of security updates; that is a security-update commitment, not a claim that every feature or operating-system release will be supported for the same period.
Choose iPhone for iOS and Apple continuity
The iPhone 18 Pro Max is the more straightforward choice if you already depend on Apple devices and services. Consider how your watch, computer, tablet, messaging, cloud storage, and purchased apps work together: replacing or keeping that setup can matter more in daily use than a small spec difference. The phone also supports MagSafe, Apple’s magnetic accessory and charging system.

What can you expect from battery life?
Capacity figures do not translate directly into everyday runtime. TechRadar’s comparison estimates around 30 hours of casual use for either phone, and about 16 hours of continuous use for the Galaxy versus 17 hours for the iPhone. Those are the comparison’s estimates, not a guarantee or a test conducted for this article; workload, network, settings, and regional model can change results.
The comparison lists a 5,000mAh battery for the S26 Ultra. For the iPhone 18 Pro Max it reports 5,567mAh in eSIM-only models and 5,391mAh in other variants. Samsung advertises up to 75% charge in 30 minutes under its stated conditions. Battery capacity and that charging claim should not be treated as a direct measure of which phone lasts longer in your routine.
Quick Recap
Which flagship phone is right for you?
- Choose the Galaxy S26 Ultra if you want Android, a lighter phone, an included S Pen, Privacy Display, or dedicated 3x and 5x optical telephoto cameras.
- Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you prefer iOS, already use Apple devices and services, want a variable-aperture main camera or MagSafe, or need the listed 2TB storage option.
- Compare the exact configuration and local offer if price is the deciding factor; the reported US starting prices are effectively alike, and retailer pricing changes.
- Try both in person if comfort is critical. Their screen sizes match, but their weights differ, and published dimensions cannot predict your grip preference.
