There is no single zoom winner. In the published side-by-side tests covered here, the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra generally preserved more fine detail at 10x in bright daylight, while the Google Pixel 10 Pro XL often produced a more convincing-looking picture beyond 30x, especially at 100x. Pixel’s advantage at extreme reach comes from AI reconstruction that can alter fine lettering. At 5x in daylight, the two phones were broadly similar. Your better choice depends on magnification, light, subject matter and whether you value visual impact or faithful detail.

Which phones are being compared?

The title “Galaxy Ultra versus Pixel Pro” covers several generations, so these findings apply specifically to the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra and Google Pixel 10 Pro XL. They are the models used in the published comparisons discussed in this guide. Results from an older Galaxy Ultra or Pixel Pro should not be assumed to match them.

Camera hardware and what the zoom labels mean

Both phones provide a 5x optical telephoto view, but their camera layouts are different. Optical reach comes from a dedicated telephoto lens; higher numbers on the camera interface then combine optical data with cropping and computational processing.

Phone Telephoto hardware Advertised maximum What that means for comparison
Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra 10 MP 3x telephoto and 50 MP 5x telephoto 100x headline zoom capability There are separate cameras for approximately 3x and 5x framing. The 100x figure is not equivalent to 100x optical magnification.
Google Pixel 10 Pro XL 48 MP 5x telephoto Pro Res Zoom up to 100x The published specification lists one 5x telephoto. Pro Res Zoom uses computational processing at higher settings.

Samsung’s 200 MP main camera, 50 MP ultrawide, 10 MP 3x unit and 50 MP 5x unit give it more dedicated telephoto steps. Google’s specification lists a 48 MP 5x telephoto and Pro Res Zoom to 100x. Those megapixel counts and maximum labels describe hardware or features; they do not, by themselves, predict which photograph will look better.

Optical reach versus a large number on the screen

A 3x or 5x lens changes the framing by physically magnifying the scene before the image is recorded. A 10x, 30x or 100x setting can then combine that lens data with a crop and software sharpening. The further you move past the optical camera’s native range, the more the output depends on processing, light, focus and atmospheric clarity.

That is why a 100x mode should be treated as a way to compose a distant subject, not as proof that the phone resolves 100 times more detail than a standard camera. The two phones reach their headline maximums differently, and the visual character at those settings is not directly comparable to their 5x optical images.

Why the S26 Ultra’s extra telephoto matters

The Samsung has a dedicated 3x camera as well as its 5x unit. That gives it an intermediate framing option for people, pets, products and details that would look too distant at 5x but too small at the main camera’s shorter settings. The Pixel specification discussed here identifies a 5x telephoto rather than a separate 3x telephoto. This does not automatically make Samsung’s images better, but it gives Samsung users another native focal step before heavier cropping begins.

Results at each useful zoom range

At 5x in daylight: essentially a close call

GSMArena’s daylight samples showed subtle differences at 5x but no consistent detail winner across most scenes. Both phones were using their 5x optical telephoto reach, so this is the fairest direct hardware comparison.

People photographs showed a rendering preference rather than a decisive quality gap. Samsung tended toward warmer, yellower color, while Pixel looked more neutral or slightly pink. Skin-tone preference, surrounding light and the intended look matter more here than declaring one processing style objectively correct.

If most of your telephoto photos are made around 5x in daylight, choose based on the wider camera system, software preferences and other phone features rather than expecting a dramatic zoom difference.

At 10x in bright outdoor light: Samsung usually keeps more texture

The clearest Samsung advantage appeared at 10x in bright daylight. Tom’s Guide’s sign comparison found that the S26 Ultra retained more surface texture, while the Pixel smoothed poles and buildings. GSMArena also reported a noticeable Samsung fine-detail advantage in bright outdoor scenes.

This does not mean every Samsung 10x frame wins. It means that, in the cited outdoor samples, small textures and edges survived enlargement more convincingly. Brick, painted surfaces, distant architecture and lettering on a sign are the kinds of subjects where that difference is easiest to notice at full resolution.

At 10x indoors or in low light: the advantage narrows

Lighting changes the result. GSMArena found that Samsung’s quality dropped in dim indoor scenes and that the phones were mostly level overall. In many of its low-light samples, Pixel looked sharper at 10x.

This is an important qualification for anyone who photographs concerts, indoor sports, evening events or rooms with limited illumination. The bright-daylight Samsung lead cannot be carried over automatically to dark scenes. Pixel’s processing may produce a crisper-looking low-light frame, while Samsung’s daylight texture advantage becomes less reliable.

Beyond 30x: Pixel favors an impressive-looking result

Tom’s Guide reported that Pro Res Zoom activates above 30x and uses AI enhancement to add apparent sharpness and definition. In its 100x comparisons, the Pixel often made distant birds, flowers and other textures look much clearer than Samsung’s softer, painterly output.

John Velasco of Tom’s Guide summarized that finding this way: “At ranges beyond 30x, the Pixel 10 Pro XL produces better-looking shots with the help of AI.” The qualification matters: “better-looking” describes the visual result in those examples, not a claim that the phone captured equivalent optical detail.

At 100x: clarity versus faithful evidence

Extreme zoom exposes a trade-off that does not show up as clearly at 5x or 10x. Pixel’s enhancement can invent or reshape fine texture while making the whole image appear cleaner. That worked well for distant organic subjects in the cited examples. It failed on some fine print and signage, where words could be rendered incorrectly.

Samsung’s 100x output was often softer and more painterly, but its less aggressive processing sometimes left lettering more accurate. A soft photograph that preserves the actual characters may be more useful than a sharper-looking photograph containing incorrect ones.

Comparing the phones by distance, light and fidelity

Use case More favorable pattern in the cited tests Reason to be cautious
Bright outdoor detail around 10x Galaxy S26 Ultra The result depends on light and subject; it is not a universal score.
5x daylight portraits and general scenes No consistent winner Color rendering differs: Samsung warmer, Pixel more neutral or pink.
10x in dim indoor scenes Pixel often looked sharper in GSMArena samples Neither phone is guaranteed to dominate every low-light subject.
Distant subjects above 30x Pixel 10 Pro XL for apparent sharpness Pro Res Zoom may reconstruct texture rather than preserve it.
Very distant signs or exact lettering No simple winner Pixel can alter words; Samsung can be too soft to read.

Think of this table as a set of priorities rather than a scorecard. A traveler photographing a sunlit building may reasonably favor Samsung, while a wildlife enthusiast sharing a dramatic view of a distant bird may favor Pixel. Someone recording a sign for later transcription should be cautious with both, and especially with AI-enhanced extreme zoom.

What the images look like, not just how sharp they seem

Samsung: texture retention at practical reach

At bright 10x, Samsung’s processing retained more fine surface information in the cited tests. The result can look less polished than an AI-enhanced frame at extreme zoom, but it is often closer to the texture present in the scene. Its separate 3x telephoto also gives the camera a dedicated intermediate step before the 5x lens.

Pixel: stronger visual punch at extreme reach

Pixel’s Pro Res Zoom is designed to make very distant subjects look defined. The result can be more satisfying when your goal is to identify a bird, flower or faraway object in a single frame. The cost is that enhancement may substitute plausible detail for captured detail, particularly in small text.

Color is a preference variable

The 5x people samples showed Samsung trending warmer and yellower, with Pixel appearing more neutral or slightly pink. Neither rendering is automatically more accurate for every viewer or scene. Consider whether you prefer warmth and contrast or a more restrained color treatment when evaluating your own photos.

Sharpness is not the same as information

Edge sharpening can make poles, feathers or building lines stand out while smoothing away the fine variations that make a surface recognizable. Conversely, a softer frame can contain more faithful shapes but look disappointing on a phone screen. Compare enlarged files, not only the small preview, and ask whether the detail you see is consistent across several nearby frames.

Choosing by subject and distance

Travel architecture and landscapes

For daylight buildings, signs and landscape details photographed around 10x, the S26 Ultra’s tested texture advantage is useful. It can preserve the surface pattern of a roof, wall or distant structure without relying as heavily on generated-looking detail.

Wildlife and distant nature

If the subject is a bird, flower or another object far beyond 30x, Pixel’s extreme-zoom treatment may create the more immediately impressive image. Review the result at full size before sharing: apparent feather or petal detail may be enhanced rather than faithfully recorded.

Documents, signs and evidence

Do not treat a 100x frame from either phone as guaranteed evidence of tiny lettering. Pixel may make a sign look legible while changing the words. Samsung may preserve the shape of the lettering more faithfully but leave it too soft to read. If exact text matters, move closer, use the 3x or 5x camera when possible, and capture several frames rather than trusting an extreme digital setting.

People at telephoto distances

At 5x daylight, the tested detail difference was small. The decision is more about the preferred color rendering and the rest of each phone’s camera system. In lower light, check focus and fine detail carefully because the daylight comparison does not predict the result indoors.

Indoor events and evening scenes

Dim interiors deserve their own test. The cited GSMArena samples often showed Pixel looking sharper at 10x when light levels fell, while Samsung’s quality dropped and the overall results became closer. Moving subjects, stage lighting and atmospheric haze can make either phone miss fine detail, so a single still frame should not define the camera.

A practical way to compare the two phones yourself

A short, repeatable test is more informative than looking only at the largest zoom number. Use the same subject, viewpoint and lighting for both phones.

  1. Pick three subjects: a textured surface such as brick or foliage, a person at a safe distance, and a sign containing small but non-sensitive lettering.
  2. Capture at 5x: make one daylight set and, if relevant to your use, one indoor set. Keep the phones steady and use the same framing.
  3. Capture at 10x: repeat in bright outdoor light. Inspect texture, edges and small patterns at 100 percent rather than judging only the thumbnail.
  4. Repeat at 10x in dimmer light: compare noise, smearing and apparent sharpness. This is where the daylight pattern can change.
  5. Test beyond 30x only for subjects you actually photograph: include a distant natural subject and a sign. Check whether the enhanced image looks convincing and whether any words remain correct.
  6. Save the original files: compare the unedited captures before applying social-media compression or filters, which can hide differences.
  7. Take short bursts: make several frames without changing your position. A single focus miss or moment of movement can make one phone seem worse than it is.
  8. Check the whole frame and a crop: inspect the subject at 100 percent, then look at the surrounding edges for halos, smearing or painterly patches.

This procedure does not create a laboratory score. It tells you whether the phones’ different processing styles suit your distance, lighting and tolerance for reconstructed detail.

Common mistakes when judging zoom photos

  • Comparing different framing: If one phone fills more of the frame, its subject will appear sharper even before processing differences are considered. Match the subject size as closely as possible.
  • Testing only in perfect daylight: Samsung’s 10x advantage was clearest outdoors; the low-light pattern was more even and sometimes favored Pixel.
  • Judging only the thumbnail: A small preview rewards contrast and sharpening. Read fine lettering and inspect texture at full size.
  • Treating AI detail as proof: A convincing feather, petal or sign can contain reconstructed content. Check whether repeated frames preserve the same fine structures.
  • Using extreme zoom for documentation: If accuracy matters, use the lowest magnification that gives a clear view, keep the original file and preserve contextual shots.

How to interpret a 100x claim

A 100x label is a framing range, not a promise of 100x optical resolution. Both phones reach that headline number through a combination of their telephoto cameras, cropping and software. The Pixel’s named Pro Res Zoom feature is specifically associated with AI enhancement above 30x. Samsung’s 100x mode likewise should not be read as equivalent to a lens providing 100x optical magnification.

At extreme settings, a larger-looking subject can contain less trustworthy information than a smaller 5x or 10x photograph. If your purpose is recognition or a striking social image, Pixel’s processing may be preferable. If the purpose is documentation, preserve the wider context and use the lowest magnification that gives you a clear, honest record.

Which phone should you buy for zoom photography?

Choose the Galaxy S26 Ultra when:

  • Your most important zoom range is around 10x in bright outdoor conditions.
  • You value retained surface texture and a less painterly rendering at practical telephoto distances.
  • You want separate 3x and 5x telephoto cameras for more dedicated framing options.
  • You regularly photograph signs, architecture or other subjects where aggressive reconstruction could be misleading.

Choose the Pixel 10 Pro XL when:

  • You frequently photograph very distant subjects beyond 30x.
  • You prefer the most visually striking result, even when computational enhancement contributes substantially to the texture.
  • You often shoot in dim conditions where the cited 10x samples sometimes looked sharper from Pixel.
  • You understand that fine lettering and other exact details can be changed by Pro Res Zoom.

Choose based on your own test when:

  • Your photos are mainly 5x daylight images, where the reviewed samples found no consistent detail winner.
  • Color rendering is more important to you than small differences in texture.
  • You need both convincing distant subjects and trustworthy text, because the phones trade strengths at those tasks.

Limits of the comparison

The findings come from published sample comparisons, including Tom’s Guide’s 200-photo comparison and GSMArena’s sample sets. They are not a named market statistic, a universal image-quality score or a controlled measurement covering every phone unit and software version.

Samsung’s camera page and Google’s product specification establish the listed camera hardware and features, but specifications alone do not settle image quality. Lighting, subject movement, atmospheric haze, focus and the exact framing distance can all change the result.

Software updates can also alter processing behavior after a review is published. For a purchase decision, check that the model and software version you are considering match the tested devices as closely as possible.

Verdict

For practical telephoto photography, the Galaxy S26 Ultra is the stronger choice at 10x in bright daylight and offers a more graduated 3x-plus-5x telephoto setup. For extreme reach, the Pixel 10 Pro XL can produce the more impressive-looking image, particularly beyond 30x and at 100x, but Pro Res Zoom may rewrite fine lettering and texture. At 5x, the phones are close. Decide whether your priority is preserved detail, extreme-distance impact or faithful recording of the subject.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Galaxy S26 Ultra sharper than the Pixel 10 Pro XL at 5x?

Not consistently in the daylight samples. Both use a 5x optical telephoto view, and GSMArena found only subtle differences. Samsung looked warmer, while Pixel was more neutral or slightly pink.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which phone is better at 10x zoom?

The Galaxy S26 Ultra generally retained more fine texture in bright outdoor tests. In dim indoor scenes, that advantage narrowed, and Pixel often looked sharper in GSMArena’s samples.

Does Pixel Pro Res Zoom create real optical detail?

No. Pro Res Zoom is computational processing that adds apparent sharpness and definition, particularly above 30x. It can produce a more convincing image but may reconstruct texture or alter lettering.

Can either phone reliably read a sign at 100x?

Neither is guaranteed to preserve tiny text. Pixel may make lettering look cleaner while changing words; Samsung can retain more accurate letter shapes but be too soft to read. Move closer and use 3x or 5x when accuracy matters.

Why does Samsung have a different zoom experience?

The Galaxy S26 Ultra has separate 10 MP 3x and 50 MP 5x telephoto cameras. The Pixel 10 Pro XL specification lists a 48 MP 5x telephoto, with Pro Res Zoom extending the advertised range to 100x.

Which phone should wildlife photographers choose?

For distant subjects beyond 30x, Pixel often produced the more striking-looking birds and flowers in the cited comparisons. Choose Samsung if preserving practical-range texture and avoiding reconstructed detail matters more than maximum visual punch.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose the Galaxy S26 Ultra for more dependable bright-daylight detail around 10x and its separate 3x and 5x telephotos. Choose the Pixel 10 Pro XL for dramatic extreme zoom beyond 30x, accepting that Pro Res Zoom can change fine texture and text. At 5x, the difference is small enough that your preferred color and overall camera system should decide.
