The Galaxy S26 Ultra reaches 100x digital zoom. Its native optical telephoto positions are 3x and 5x; 2x and 10x are computational “optical-quality” positions produced with Samsung’s Adaptive Pixel processing, not additional optical lenses. For RAW, use the separate Expert RAW camera mode, which Samsung product material identifies as supporting 50MP RAW photos. The phone may save 12MP rather than 24MP when the zoom, mode, temperature or camera settings do not meet Samsung’s 24MP conditions.
How far can the Galaxy S26 Ultra zoom?
The maximum selectable magnification is 100x, but that number describes digital zoom. Digital zoom enlarges and processes image data after capture; it is not the same as placing a subject on the sensor through a long optical lens. Expect the most dependable detail from the phone’s native 3x and 5x telephoto cameras, with computational processing filling the positions between and beyond them.

| Zoom position | What it is | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 0.6x | Ultrawide view | Widest native camera perspective |
| 1x | Wide camera | Main 200MP sensor and widest-aperture lens |
| 2x | Optical-quality, Adaptive Pixel | Computational crop/processing; not a separate native telephoto distance |
| 3x | Native optical telephoto | 10MP telephoto camera |
| 5x | Native optical telephoto | 50MP telephoto camera |
| 10x | Optical-quality, Adaptive Pixel | Computationally produced position; not a native 10x optical lens |
| Up to 100x | Digital zoom | Highest magnification, with progressively less recoverable detail |
Therefore, the accurate short answer to “Is the S26 Ultra’s 100x zoom optical?” is no. Samsung’s 2026 specifications list 3x and 5x optical zoom, 2x and 10x optical-quality zoom enabled by Adaptive Pixel, and 100x digital zoom. “Optical-quality” is Samsung’s computational-quality designation; it should not be presented as equivalent to native optical magnification.
Why the 5x camera matters
The dedicated 5x module combines a 50MP sensor with an f/2.9 aperture. The 3x module uses a 10MP sensor. For distant subjects, use the 5x button before dragging toward 10x or 100x. This starts with real telephoto data rather than an enlarged wide-camera frame.

Low-light zoom behavior
Samsung says the S26 Ultra’s wider apertures allow more light to reach the sensors, producing clearer low-light photos with richer detail even when zoomed. The 200MP wide camera is listed with an f/1.4 aperture, while the 5x telephoto is listed at f/2.9. Samsung also reports 47% more light on the 200MP wide camera and 37% more on the 50MP telephoto compared with the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Those are Samsung’s comparisons, not an independent laboratory result.
What cameras are in the Galaxy S26 Ultra?
| Camera | Resolution | Documented aperture | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wide | 200MP | f/1.4 | Main camera for 1x shooting and high-resolution captures |
| Ultrawide | 50MP | Not stated in the cited specifications | 0.6x perspective and wide scenes |
| Telephoto | 10MP | Not stated in the cited specifications | Native 3x optical zoom |
| Telephoto | 50MP | f/2.9 | Native 5x optical zoom |
The phone also lists optical image stabilization. Stabilization helps counter hand movement, but it cannot turn a digitally enlarged frame into the detail of a longer optical lens. At extreme zoom, brace the phone against a solid surface and use a timer or remote shutter when possible.

Can the Galaxy S26 Ultra shoot RAW?
Yes. Samsung’s RAW-oriented route is Expert RAW, a separate camera mode/app rather than the ordinary Photo mode. Samsung product material identifies 50MP RAW capture on the S26 Ultra. RAW files retain more sensor data for exposure, white-balance and highlight recovery than a finished JPEG or HEIF, but they are larger and need an editor that understands the format.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to capture a RAW file
- Install or update Expert RAW through the Galaxy Store. App features and lens support can change, so check the current release on your phone.
- Open Expert RAW instead of the standard Camera app’s Photo mode.
- Choose the available resolution and lens shown by that release, then enable RAW (or RAW plus JPEG, if offered).
- Frame the subject, expose carefully and capture. Keep the phone still for night scenes or long exposures.
- Import the resulting RAW files into a compatible desktop or mobile editor. Export JPEG or HEIF copies for ordinary sharing.
Do not assume every lens, zoom position or shooting mode is available in RAW. The documented 50MP figure identifies the capability, while the current Expert RAW version determines the exact combinations exposed in the interface. RAW also does not mean 100x digital zoom becomes optical; it changes the file’s editing latitude, not the lens geometry.

When RAW is worth the storage
- Use it for difficult lighting, product or landscape work, and images you expect to edit.
- Use ordinary Photo mode for quick sharing, moving subjects and situations where file size matters.
- Plan storage before a trip: a RAW original plus an exported JPEG can require several times the space of a single processed photo.
Why are S26 Ultra photos saved at 12MP instead of 24MP?
On the Galaxy S26 Ultra, 24MP output is conditional rather than universal. Samsung Support says the phone uses 24MP in the 0.6x–1.9x and 5x–9.9x zoom ranges when the required quality setting is selected. Outside those ranges, the camera defaults to 12MP.
| Condition | Result |
|---|---|
| 0.6x–1.9x or 5x–9.9x, with Photo Enhancer set to Prioritize quality | 24MP can be used |
| Any zoom outside those ranges | 12MP default |
| Close-up shot | 12MP |
| Continuous shooting from the third shot within one second | 12MP |
| Burst shooting | 12MP |
| Flash enabled | 12MP |
| Night mode | 12MP |
| Document scan | 12MP |
| Abnormally high or low operating temperature | 12MP |
| Photo Enhancer set to Balanced or Prioritize speed | 12MP |
How to maximize the chance of 24MP output
- Open Camera and select Photo mode.
- Open Camera settings and find Photo Enhancer.
- Select Prioritize quality.
- Stay within 0.6x–1.9x or 5x–9.9x zoom.
- Turn off flash, Night mode, burst/continuous capture and document scanning when 24MP is important.
- Let the phone return to a normal operating temperature, then take a single still photo.
A 12MP result is therefore often an intentional performance choice, not a failed 200MP sensor. Samsung’s processing may lower output resolution to handle speed, heat, flash timing, multi-frame night capture or close-focus requirements.

How should you back up S26 Ultra photos and RAW files?
Use two separate ideas: migration when changing phones and backup when protecting originals. Samsung documents Smart Switch for moving contacts, photos, music, videos, messages, notes and calendars to a new Galaxy device. That makes Smart Switch a device-transfer tool; it is not, by itself, a complete cloud-backup policy.

Moving photos to a new Galaxy phone with Smart Switch
- Install or open Smart Switch on both phones.
- Connect the devices wirelessly or with a suitable USB cable.
- On the receiving phone, choose to receive data from a Galaxy or Android device.
- Select photos and videos, and include other categories you need.
- Start the transfer and keep both phones powered until the progress screen reports completion.
- Open Gallery and a file manager on the new phone. Check recent folders, older albums and several RAW files before erasing the old device.
Transfer behavior can depend on connection method, file location and the current Smart Switch release. Treat verification on the destination phone as part of the move, especially for Expert RAW files stored outside the main Camera folder.

A durable backup workflow for JPEG, HEIF and RAW
- Keep the original files on the phone until a second copy is confirmed.
- Copy the Camera and Expert RAW folders to a computer or external drive using USB, or export them through your chosen storage service.
- Preserve the original filenames and folder structure where possible; do not rely only on edited exports.
- Open a sample of RAW files from different dates on the backup drive to confirm they are readable.
- Maintain a second copy in a different physical location. A drive beside the phone does not protect against theft, loss or a single hardware failure.
- Recheck the backup after major trips and before deleting files from the phone.
Cloud services vary in quota, RAW retention, version history and restore behavior. The cited Samsung material does not establish a particular provider’s current limits or guarantee RAW preservation, so confirm those terms directly before making a service your only copy. Keeping RAW originals on a computer or external drive is general workflow advice, not a Samsung-documented guarantee.
Video and stabilization highlights
Samsung lists 4K recording at 120 frames per second in Pro Video and 8K recording at 30 frames per second. Optical image stabilization is included in the product specifications. High-frame-rate 4K is useful for motion and slow-motion editing, while 8K favors maximum frame detail when lighting, storage and editing hardware are adequate. Video files are substantially larger than still photos, so include the video folders in the same backup routine.
A practical decision guide
| Your priority | Use | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Highest dependable reach | 5x native telephoto | Uses the dedicated 50MP optical module |
| Fast shareable snapshot | Photo mode at 1x–5x | Processed files are smaller and ready to send |
| Maximum editing control | Expert RAW | Preserves RAW data; verify current lens support |
| 24MP still image | Photo mode, Prioritize quality, 0.6x–1.9x or 5x–9.9x | Meets Samsung’s stated conditions |
| Phone replacement | Smart Switch plus manual verification | Transfers device data, then confirms originals arrived |
| Long-term protection | Two independent copies, including local RAW storage | Reduces dependence on one device or provider |
Bottom line
The Galaxy S26 Ultra’s headline reach is 100x digital zoom, while 3x and 5x are the genuine optical telephoto positions and 2x/10x are Adaptive Pixel optical-quality modes. Expert RAW provides the RAW workflow, with Samsung identifying 50MP RAW capture but leaving exact lens support to the current app version. If photos show 12MP, check the zoom range, Photo Enhancer setting, shooting mode and temperature before assuming a camera fault. Use Smart Switch for migration, then keep verified local copies of both finished photos and RAW originals for real backup protection.
