Samsung Galaxy S25 FE setup checklist: Essential settings to change first

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

The safest Galaxy S25 FE setup order is: identify the exact SM-S731 variant, connect to trusted Wi‑Fi, update the phone and its apps, secure the lock screen, review permissions, configure backup and device finding, then tune display, battery, notifications and accessories. Finish by testing calls, data, charging and your backups before erasing the old phone.

1. Identify your exact Galaxy S25 FE model first

Open Settings > About phone and record the model number. Galaxy S25 FE units use the SM-S731 family, but the final letter or regional suffix matters. Samsung publishes separate manuals and update tracks for models such as SM-S731B and SM-S731U, as well as other regional and carrier editions. Menu names, preinstalled apps, cellular features and update timing can therefore differ.

What to record Why it matters Where to find it
Model number, such as SM-S731B or SM-S731U Determines the relevant manual, firmware channel and some carrier features. Settings > About phone
Software version and build number Useful when checking whether an update applies to your edition or troubleshooting a feature. Settings > About phone > Software information
Android version and security patch level Shows how current the operating system and security fixes are. Settings > About phone > Software information
Carrier or service-provider software version Carrier-controlled firmware can arrive on a different schedule from an unlocked or international model. Settings > About phone > Software information

Keep a photo or written note of this information. It prevents a common mistake: following instructions for a different regional S25 FE and assuming a missing menu means the phone is faulty.

2. Complete accounts and network setup deliberately

Use a trusted connection

Connect to a Wi‑Fi network you trust before downloading updates, restoring a cloud backup or moving a large photo library. Confirm that the phone has internet access by opening a known website or the Galaxy Store. If setup was interrupted, return to Settings > Connections > Wi‑Fi and finish it there.

Sign in after checking backup choices

During setup, sign in to the Google account used for Play Store apps and Android backups and to your Samsung account for Samsung services, device-finding features and Samsung Cloud options available in your region. Read the backup and synchronization choices instead of accepting every prompt without checking what will be uploaded. Account menus and wording can vary with the One UI release.

Turn on finding and backup options

Enable the device-finding and backup controls offered during setup, then verify them later in their respective account settings. A phone that can be located, locked or erased remotely is much easier to recover after loss. Backup is valuable only if it is actually running, so check the most recent backup status before you depend on it.

3. Install every available update before restoring your data

Update the operating system before reinstalling dozens of apps. A clean, current system gives you the best chance of avoiding compatibility problems during migration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Software update.
  2. Tap Download and install or the equivalent check-for-updates control.
  3. Install the offered update, keep the phone connected to power if the package is large, and allow the restart to finish.
  4. Return to the same screen and check again after the reboot. Some devices receive a second package after the first update completes.
  5. Open the Google Play Store and Galaxy Store, go to each store’s app-update area, and install pending updates.
  6. Check Settings > About phone > Software information > Google Play system update and install a separate Google Play system update if one is offered.

Samsung’s update notice says: “To get the best from your device, please keep your device up to date and regularly check for software updates.” The SM-S731B update history includes Android 16 builds and security patches, but the release date and availability can differ by country, carrier and model. Do not treat an update shown for SM-S731B as proof that the same build is available for SM-S731U or another edition.

If an update will not install

  • Reconnect to stable Wi‑Fi and retry the manual check.
  • Make sure there is enough free storage for the download and installation.
  • Restart the phone, then check Software update again.
  • Compare the model number and carrier software version with the update notice; a regional delay may be normal.
  • Do not interrupt a firmware installation or power off the phone while it is applying the update.

4. Build a strong lock screen before adding personal data

Choose a PIN or password first

Use a long PIN or a password that is not reused elsewhere. A longer credential protects local data if someone obtains the handset, while a short or predictable code is easier to guess. Avoid birthdays, repeating digits and patterns visible from finger marks.

Add fingerprints for practical daily unlocking

Enroll the fingers you normally use while holding the phone. Registering more than one finger can help when the handset is in either hand, but every enrolled fingerprint is another biometric that can unlock it. Follow the on-screen prompts and scan the edges of each finger rather than tapping the same center point repeatedly.

Decide whether face recognition is worth the trade-off

Face recognition is convenient, but its convenience and security characteristics differ from a long PIN or password. Use it only if that trade-off fits your routine. Keep the strong PIN or password as the primary recovery method.

Hide sensitive lock-screen content

Go to Settings > Notifications or the lock-screen notification controls and disable message previews if other people could see the phone. You can leave notifications visible while hiding their content, or block lock-screen notifications entirely. Labels vary by One UI version. Also review Settings > Security and privacy for lock-screen and biometric options.

5. Audit privacy, permissions and security scanning

Do this before restoring every old app. A fresh phone is the easiest time to decide which apps should have access to sensitive sensors and data.

Review high-impact permissions

Open the app-permission manager from Settings > Security and privacy > Permission manager (the exact path may differ) and inspect these categories:

  • Location: allow “while in use” when continuous access is unnecessary. Remove access from apps that have no location-based function.
  • Microphone and camera: permit them only for calling, recording, scanning or other features you intentionally use.
  • Photos and videos: choose selected-item access where the system offers it instead of granting an entire library to a simple utility.
  • Contacts, calendar and call logs: check whether the app genuinely needs your address book or history.
  • Nearby devices: keep access for accessories you actively pair, and remove it from apps with no Bluetooth or local-device purpose.
  • Notifications and special access: review apps allowed to read notifications, appear over other apps, change system settings or access accessibility features. These permissions can expose more information than an ordinary alert.

When an app stops working after a permission is removed, restore only the specific permission required for that feature. Do not grant every category as a blanket fix.

Check advertising and privacy controls

Review Google and Samsung privacy dashboards, advertising personalization choices and diagnostic-data settings during setup and after major updates. The names and locations of these controls can change with One UI and regional rules. The goal is not to disable every service blindly; it is to understand what is enabled and keep only what you use.

Leave protective scanning enabled

Keep Google Play Protect and Samsung’s security scanning enabled. Turn either one off only for a specific, informed troubleshooting step and turn it back on immediately afterward. There is no reliable official battery percentage showing that disabling these protections produces a universal gain.

6. Migrate only what you have verified

Prepare the old phone

Keep the old phone powered on and connected until the new S25 FE has passed your checks. Confirm that the old device has current contacts, photos, messages and authenticator data, and know the passwords for accounts that cannot be transferred automatically.

  • [20 Foot Drop Tested]: Multi-layered TPU and Polycarbonate materials create ultimate drop protection.
  • [Rotatable Holster]: Experience user-friendly convenience with an included detachable rotating holster.

Choose a transfer route

Use the transfer flow offered during setup or the Samsung migration tool available on your devices. Follow the on-screen account, cable or wireless instructions for your model. If you already completed setup, the same transfer features are available through Samsung’s setup and account tools, although exact labels vary by software version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore selectively

Start with contacts, calendar entries, messages, photos and the apps you need immediately. A selective restore makes it easier to spot a problematic app and avoids filling the phone with years of unused downloads. Reinstall banking and authenticator apps from their official stores and complete their own verification procedures.

Verify before wiping

  • Open several old photos and confirm that recent images are present.
  • Place a test call and send a message.
  • Check contacts, calendar and notes.
  • Open your password manager and authenticator, then test a sign-in that requires a code.
  • Confirm that the latest backup timestamp has changed on the S25 FE.

Only after these checks should you sign out of the old phone or erase it.

7. Tune the display for comfort, smoothness and endurance

There is no official one-size-fits-all battery percentage for any individual display toggle. Choose based on how you use the phone rather than chasing an unverified number.

Set the basics

  1. Open Settings > Display.
  2. Choose light or dark mode according to readability and preference.
  3. Turn on adaptive brightness if you want the phone to respond to ambient light, or adjust brightness manually if you prefer a fixed level.
  4. Set a screen timeout that prevents the display staying awake in a pocket or on a desk, without interrupting tasks you regularly read.
  5. Adjust font size and screen zoom until text is comfortable without forcing constant scrolling.

Choose Motion smoothness intentionally

Higher screen smoothness can make scrolling and animations feel more fluid; a lower setting can favor endurance. Compare the available modes in Settings > Display > Motion smoothness and select the one that matches your priority. The choice is a trade-off, not a guaranteed percentage saving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prevent pocket touches

Enable Accidental touch protection in Display settings if the phone is often carried in a pocket or bag. If it blocks a legitimate touch, adjust how you hold or wake the device rather than disabling every lock-screen safeguard.

8. Configure battery, background use and charging protection

Inspect Battery and device care

Open Settings > Battery and device care and review the battery dashboard, background-usage limits and power-saving controls. Identify apps using resources in the background before placing them into sleep lists. Messaging, navigation, health and security apps may need background access for alerts or synchronization, so test an app after restricting it.

  • Textured all over for peak grip

Automate power saving around your routine

Use power-saving automation when you need longer runtime, such as overnight or during travel. Check which functions the mode changes on your software version before relying on it; reduced background activity can delay notifications or synchronization.

Choose a charging-protection goal

Review the charging-protection options in Battery settings. A charge limit or adaptive schedule can favor long-term battery longevity, while maximum charging capacity favors immediate runtime. Pick one based on whether the phone usually remains plugged in or must last through a long day. Samsung does not publish a universal battery-life gain for a particular limit in this checklist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check wireless accessories

Samsung’s official specifications warn that Wireless PowerShare may not work with certain covers, accessories or other devices. Test the combination you actually use instead of assuming every case and receiver will align. Remove a thick or poorly aligned cover when diagnosing intermittent charging.

9. Make notifications useful instead of noisy

Disable unnecessary alerts at the app level

Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications and turn off alerts from apps that do not need your attention. Keep account, security, payment and emergency alerts enabled.

Use notification categories

For messaging, banking and shopping apps, leave important categories on and silence promotional or low-priority categories. Category names are supplied by each app, so review them individually. A silent category is often better than blocking the entire app.

Review emergency alerts

Open the emergency-alert controls and confirm that regional emergency messages are enabled. Options depend on country and carrier. Do not disable them merely to reduce ordinary notification noise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set defaults

In Settings > Apps > Choose default apps, select your preferred browser, digital assistant, phone app and messaging app. Test links and voice commands afterward so you know which app will open when another application hands off a task.

  • Trusted OtterBox Quality: With OtterBox, you're not just buying a case; you're investing in peace of mind.

10. Protect the hardware with a compatible case

Before buying a Galaxy S25 FE case, match it to the exact SM-S731 model. Check camera and button cut-outs, access to the USB-C port, screen-edge clearance and compatibility with wireless charging and Wireless PowerShare. Samsung documents that some covers and accessories can interfere with PowerShare, so a case that fits physically may still be unsuitable for charging.

After installing a case, test fingerprint enrollment and recognition, camera framing, wired charging, wireless charging if you use it, NFC payments and Wireless PowerShare. Remove the case if a test fails, then reinstall it carefully to identify whether alignment or thickness is the cause.

11. Run a complete functional check before retiring the old phone

Use this final checklist in the place and conditions where you normally use the phone:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Make and receive a cellular call.
  • Send a text message and verify mobile data with Wi‑Fi temporarily disconnected.
  • Connect to your regular Wi‑Fi network and confirm that it reconnects after a restart.
  • Pair a Bluetooth accessory and test audio or controls.
  • Turn NFC on and test your payment setup according to your bank’s verification process.
  • Take photographs with the main and front cameras, then confirm that they appear in your chosen backup service.
  • Unlock with each enrolled fingerprint and confirm that the lock-screen privacy setting behaves as intended.
  • Charge with your normal cable and charger; test wireless charging or PowerShare only if you use them.
  • Check the backup status and record the current software build and security-patch date.

Keep the old phone until every item that matters to you works on the S25 FE. If a problem appears later, the recorded model, build and patch level will make support instructions much more precise.

12. A priority order if you have only 15 minutes

When time is limited, complete these steps before cosmetic personalization:

  1. Record the model number and software information.
  2. Connect to trusted Wi‑Fi and install system, Google Play system and store updates.
  3. Set a long PIN or password and enroll fingerprints.
  4. Hide sensitive lock-screen notification content.
  5. Enable backup and device finding, then verify their status.
  6. Review camera, microphone, location, notification and nearby-device permissions.
  7. Test a call, mobile data, charging and one recent backup item.

After that foundation is secure, adjust display smoothness, notification categories, power-saving automation and accessory choices to suit your habits.
