The Galaxy S25 Edge is the thinner, lighter conventional phone; the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra opens into a much larger screen and adds a telephoto camera. In a U.S. storefront snapshot accessed October 7, 2026, the 256GB models had list prices of $1,099.99 and $2,099.99, respectively—a $1,000 difference. Choose between them chiefly by form factor and budget, not by assuming that one is simply a better version of the other.

How their size and screens affect everyday use

Galaxy S25 Edge: slimmer and lighter in hand

At 163 g and 5.8 mm thick, the S25 Edge is the more portable option by weight and body thickness. Its 6.7-inch display is always ready to use, with no hinge or inner screen to unfold. Samsung’s S25 Edge thickness is a single-body measurement.

Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra: a compact cover screen, then a larger workspace

The Fold8 Ultra weighs 215 g. Folded, it measures 8.9 mm thick; open, its 8.0-inch inner display gives substantially more screen area for reading, viewing or working across apps than either phone’s conventional screen. Its stated 4.1 mm unfolded thickness excludes the main-screen frame, so it is not an apples-to-apples comparison with the S25 Edge’s closed-body thickness. The 6.5-inch cover display also lets you use the Fold without opening it.

The practical trade-off is straightforward: the S25 Edge favors a thin, light phone, while the Fold8 Ultra prioritizes a larger display that travels folded. The size figures support this use-case distinction; they do not establish which design will feel better to a particular person.

Camera comparison: the Fold8 Ultra adds optical telephoto

Both phones have a 200 MP main rear camera with optical image stabilization. The S25 Edge pairs it with a 12 MP ultra-wide camera; the Fold8 Ultra has a 50 MP ultra-wide and a separate 10 MP telephoto camera with 3× optical zoom. That dedicated telephoto gives the Fold8 Ultra a listed optical zoom option the S25 Edge’s two-camera rear system does not have. Megapixel counts alone do not establish which phone takes better photographs, and no independent head-to-head image testing is established here.

The Fold8 Ultra also has separate 10 MP cameras for its cover and main screens, compared with the S25 Edge’s 12 MP front camera. A higher listed megapixel figure by itself is not a quality verdict.

Battery, charging and protection

Samsung lists typical battery capacity as 3,900 mAh for the S25 Edge and 5,000 mAh for the Fold8 Ultra’s dual battery. Typical capacity is not a runtime test: the figures do not establish how many extra hours the Fold8 Ultra will last, because actual battery life depends on use and other factors.

The quoted wired-charge percentages are Samsung internal laboratory results under its specified conditions, not independent measurements or a guarantee of the same result for every user. Both phones require a separately sold adapter for the cited wired-charging setup: 25W for the S25 Edge and 45W for the Fold8 Ultra.

Availability and regional differences

Samsung announced the Fold8 series on July 22, 2026. Samsung Newsroom India reported sales beginning August 7 in select markets, with rollout across 106 markets. That announcement does not guarantee availability of every model, color or storage tier in every country. See Samsung Newsroom India’s launch announcement for its market context.

Samsung notes that S25 Edge specifications and features may vary by market and can change without notice. Before purchase, check the local listing for storage options, supported network bands, carrier compatibility, software and feature availability. The connectivity standards in the comparison table do not confirm that every band or service is supported by every regional variant.

Which phone should you choose?

  • Choose the Galaxy S25 Edge if a thin, light conventional phone matters more than having a screen that unfolds, and you want the lower U.S. base price shown in the cited snapshot.
  • Choose the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra if you value a larger unfolded display, a cover screen for folded use and a dedicated 3× optical telephoto camera enough to accept the heavier device and higher listed price.
  • Compare the exact storage tier and live offer if price is decisive. The 256GB U.S. list-price gap is not necessarily the gap after discounts, trade-ins, carrier promotions or regional pricing.

Neither model is a direct substitute for every buyer: the main decision is whether a thin conventional phone or a heavier foldable with a larger inner display better suits your daily use.
