Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Carrier Unlock: How to Switch Networks

To carrier-unlock a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, request the unlock from the carrier that originally sold or locked it. Check that carrier’s current eligibility rules, follow its official request or automatic unlock process, then confirm that your exact phone model works with the carrier you want to join. A carrier unlock removes a network restriction; it does not unlock the phone’s screen or guarantee compatibility with every network or service.

First, identify what kind of unlock you need

This guide is about a carrier or SIM unlock: removing software restrictions that can prevent a phone from being activated on another carrier. It is different from removing a screen PIN, password, pattern, or biometric lock. If the phone asks for a screen credential, contact the person or organization that set it; a carrier unlock will not resolve that issue.

The T-Mobile Consumer Code for Wireless Service defines unlocking as “disabling software that would prevent a consumer from attempting to activate a device designed for one carrier’s network on another carrier’s network, even if that network is technologically compatible.” The distinction matters: unlocking lets you attempt activation, but it does not establish that the other network supports the phone. What to check before requesting an unlock

  1. Find the original carrier or seller. Check the purchase receipt, account records, or the carrier name shown in the phone’s service history. The carrier that currently provides service may not be the one that placed the lock. If a carrier did not sell or authorize the phone, its unlock process may not apply; T-Mobile, for example, directs owners of devices it did not sell or authorize to contact the carrier or manufacturer that sold the device. 2. Gather account and payment details. Be ready to provide the account holder’s information and the phone’s IMEI if the carrier asks for it. Check whether the device is financed or leased, whether the account is in good standing, and whether the phone has been reported lost, stolen, or blocked. These can affect eligibility.
  3. Identify prepaid or postpaid status and purchase date. Carriers may use different rules for prepaid devices, postpaid devices, and phones bought from another retailer. Do not assume that another carrier’s waiting period applies to your phone.
  4. Check the exact model and intended network. Record the model number in the phone’s device information or packaging. Ask the destination carrier whether it accepts that model and supports the voice, data, and other services you need. A successful unlock does not answer those compatibility questions.

How to request the unlock

  1. Open the original carrier’s official unlock page or contact support. Use the carrier’s process for the device’s original sale and service type. Submit a request if required, or check whether the phone is eligible for automatic unlocking.
  2. Resolve any eligibility issue the carrier identifies. For example, pay an outstanding device balance if the applicable policy requires it, or ask the carrier what account or device record must be corrected. Do not use a third-party unlock service as a substitute for confirming eligibility with the original carrier.
  3. Wait for the carrier’s confirmation or instructions. Some eligible devices unlock remotely; others require an approved request or additional steps. Exact menus and prompts can vary by carrier, software version, and S23 Ultra variant, so follow the instructions the carrier gives for your handset rather than relying on a generic menu path.
  4. Verify the status with the carrier. Ask whether the unlock has completed and whether anything remains to be done on the phone. Keep the confirmation for your records.
  5. Test activation with the destination carrier. Follow that carrier’s SIM or eSIM activation instructions. If activation fails, ask both carriers whether the problem is a remaining lock, device compatibility, account provisioning, or another activation issue before concluding that the unlock failed.

U.S. carrier policy examples

The figures below are examples from the carriers’ published U.S. policies, not universal requirements for every Galaxy S23 Ultra. Policies can change; check the official page for the rule that applies to your account, purchase date, and device.

#1 Best Overall
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra 5G, US Version, 256GB, Phantom Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • 6.8" Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate, up to ~1750 nits brightness, HDR10+ support, and ultra-smooth responsiveness for gaming and scrolling.
Carrier Published policy example What to verify
T-Mobile For postpaid devices, the published policy includes at least 40 days active on the requesting line, a T-Mobile-sold device, an account in good standing, and full payment of a device financed or leased through T-Mobile. Eligible devices are unlocked free; remote unlocking is generally completed within two business days when supported. The prepaid policy differs: it includes a 365-day period or qualifying refill conditions. Confirm whether the phone is T-Mobile-authorized, prepaid or postpaid, paid off, and eligible under the current policy. T-Mobile SIM Unlock Policy
AT&T Its published postpaid requirements generally include purchase more than 60 days ago, a zero installment balance, no lost, stolen, or fraud report, and a current account for active customers. AT&T says some eligible Samsung devices unlock automatically. Check the phone’s status and the current requirements through AT&T’s official process. Samsung instructions on its page are divided by devices released before and after September 1, 2025; do not assume the newer menu instructions apply to the S23 Ultra. AT&T unlock guidance
Verizon Verizon’s policy depends on the device and purchase conditions. Its currently published policy includes changes for devices purchased from January 27, 2026; the applicable waiting period should not be generalized without checking the device’s specific circumstances. Verify the rule for the phone’s purchase date and payment status directly with Verizon. The carrier cautions that technology differences can limit or prevent use on another network. Why an unlocked S23 Ultra may not work fully on another carrier

Unlock status and network compatibility are separate checks. The T-Mobile Consumer Code notes: “Accordingly, a device that works on one carrier’s network may not be technologically compatible with another carrier’s network.” Verizon likewise warns that an unlocked device may have limited or no functionality on another network because of technology differences. Before switching, have the destination carrier check the exact model number and confirm its support for the features you rely on, including network bands, voice calling, and data. The available specifications and policies do not establish that every S23 Ultra variant will be accepted or fully supported by every carrier.

SIM and eSIM are not the unlock

The Galaxy S23 Ultra Verizon specification sheet lists both a nano-SIM and eSIM. These are ways to provide service credentials; changing or adding a SIM does not remove a carrier lock. If the phone remains locked, contact the original carrier even if you have a SIM or eSIM ready for the new network. Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Verizon specification sheet
