Samsung Galaxy S23 FE vs. Galaxy S21 FE: Which Should You Buy in 2026?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most U.S. buyers in 2026, the Galaxy S23 FE is the better buy if it costs no more than about $75–$100 extra over a comparable Galaxy S21 FE. It has a newer processor, a higher-resolution main rear camera, 8GB of RAM in its U.S. configuration, and a later software-support window. The S21 FE is worth considering when it is substantially cheaper or when its much lower weight matters more than longevity.

Before choosing either, check Samsung’s refurbished Galaxy S23: it was listed at just $50 more than the S23 FE on Samsung’s Certified Re-Newed page in August 2026. Prices and stock can change. Samsung Certified Re-Newed phones

Are the design and displays different?

The screen is a near tie

Both phones have a 6.4-inch, 2340 × 1080 Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a 120Hz-class refresh rate. Expect a broadly similar experience for contrast, color, and scrolling rather than a major screen upgrade by moving to the S23 FE. Outdoor brightness, color mode, and low-brightness behavior are not established by these specifications, so sensitive buyers should inspect the exact unit in person when possible.

The S21 FE is noticeably lighter

At approximately 177g, the S21 FE is 32g lighter than the 209g S23 FE. That difference can matter during one-handed use, long reading sessions, commuting, or when adding a protective case. The S23 FE has a glass back with Gorilla Glass 5 and an aluminum frame. Both listed U.S. specifications include IP68 resistance; that rating does not mean a phone is waterproof, and liquid damage may not be covered by warranty. Samsung Galaxy S23 FE

Rank #2
Samsung Galaxy S23 FE, 128GB, Graphite - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • The S23 FE offers a 6.4‑inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with adaptive 120 Hz refresh rate and up to 1,450 nits peak brightness plus a wide DCI‑P3 color gamut. That means vibrant, high‑contrast visuals that stay bright and legible even outdoors.

Performance: the S23 FE is faster, with a thermal trade-off

In the U.S. configurations, the S23 FE’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is newer than the S21 FE’s Snapdragon 888. That gives the S23 FE more headroom for demanding games, image processing, and multitasking; its 8GB RAM baseline is also preferable to the 6GB version of the S21 FE. Both should be adequate for everyday messaging, browsing, streaming, maps, and social apps.

The newer chip does not make the S23 FE an especially cool-running or efficient gaming phone. Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 can consume substantial power and become warm under sustained loads, so peak performance does not guarantee a better experience in a long gaming session. No single performance percentage or battery-runtime advantage should be inferred without comparable testing on phones with similar software, settings, and battery condition.

Which phone has the better camera?

Rear cameras favor the S23 FE on paper

The S23 FE has a 50MP stabilized main camera, while the S21 FE has a 12MP stabilized main camera. Both have a 12MP ultrawide and an 8MP telephoto camera with 3× optical zoom. The S23 FE therefore has the stronger main-camera specification and newer image-processing platform, making it the more appealing choice for rear-camera photography overall.

Megapixels alone do not settle photo quality. Results can vary in HDR, skin tones, night scenes, moving subjects, portraits, ultrawide shots, telephoto detail, and video stabilization. There is no controlled comparison here that establishes a winner in every one of those situations.

Rank #4
SAMSUNG Galaxy S23 5G, US Version, 128GB, Phantom Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Galaxy S23 sports a 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X flat display with adaptive 48–120 Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, and a peak brightness high enough for strong outdoor visibility — giving you vibrant, crisp visuals and smooth motion while staying compact.

The S21 FE has the higher-resolution selfie camera

The S21 FE lists a 32MP front camera; the S23 FE lists a 10MP front camera. The S21 FE wins on stated resolution, but sensor size, lens quality, processing, HDR, color, and video performance matter too. The megapixel count alone does not establish that its selfies are better.

Battery life and charging: equal capacity is not equal endurance

Both phones have a rated 4,500mAh battery, 25W wired charging, and wireless charging. Those figures do not predict which used phone will last longer through a day: battery age, processor variant, brightness, refresh rate, 5G signal, gaming, camera use, and background activity all affect runtime. The S23 FE’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 can draw heavily under demanding workloads, while an older S21 FE may have a more worn battery.

Software support: both are current, but the S23 FE has more runway

Samsung’s One UI 8 compatibility page lists both the Galaxy S21 FE and Galaxy S23 FE, so the S21 FE should not be described as already unsupported. Samsung announced four generations of Android/One UI upgrades and five years of security updates for eligible devices including the S21 FE. The S23 FE launched nearly two years later and therefore has a later support cycle, making it the safer choice for someone keeping a phone for several more years.

Update availability and timing can vary by market, model, and carrier; do not assume every regional version receives updates simultaneously or infer a universal final security-update date. Samsung documents the update path as Settings → Software update → Download and install. Check the real 2026 price before choosing

Used-phone value depends on condition, storage, battery, warranty, and seller return terms. Samsung Certified Re-Newed prices below were listed when checked on August 16–18, 2026; they are not permanent prices, and stock or promotions may change.

Certified Re-Newed model Price listed in August 2026 Why it matters
Galaxy S23 FE $389 Newer FE option with a certified new Samsung battery.
Galaxy S23 $439 Only $50 more than the listed S23 FE; compare size, storage, and listing details.
Galaxy S24 FE $489 Costs more, but is a newer FE alternative with a longer remaining support window.

The regular S23 deserves particular attention if the $50 gap remains: it is smaller and lighter than the S23 FE and may be a better overall fit. Confirm selected storage, warranty terms, included accessories, and live price on the listing before buying. Samsung’s Certified Re-Newed inventory did not surface a current direct S21 FE price in the checked listings.

Which phone should you buy?

Choose the Galaxy S23 FE if

  • Its premium over a comparable S21 FE is roughly $75–$100 or less.
  • You want more remaining software support, stronger rear-camera hardware, or 8GB RAM as the U.S. baseline.
  • You play demanding games or plan to keep the phone for several years.
  • You are buying refurbished and want the option of a certified new battery.

Choose the Galaxy S21 FE if

  • It is clearly cheaper and in excellent condition.
  • Low weight and a slightly slimmer body matter more than performance or support runway.
  • Your use is mostly messaging, web, streaming, maps, and casual photography.
  • You have verified battery condition and are comfortable with its older support cycle.

Consider another model if

  • A refurbished Galaxy S23 is only slightly more expensive than the S23 FE.
  • You need excellent endurance under heavy gaming or 5G use, modern flagship charging speeds, expandable storage, or a longer support horizon.
  • The available unit has uncertain battery history, screen burn-in, liquid damage, or carrier restrictions.

What to check before buying a used or imported unit

  1. Confirm the exact model number and region. U.S. S23 FE units use Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, while other markets may use Exynos 2200; S21 FE versions commonly use Snapdragon 888 or Exynos 2100. Cellular bands and SIM details can also differ. S23 FE U.S. specifications and S23 FE regional specifications.
  2. Verify carrier compatibility, not just “unlocked” status. Check LTE/5G bands, VoLTE support, carrier certification, eSIM availability, and warranty coverage for your network. Also confirm any relevant Samsung Wallet or firmware-region limitations.
  3. Check battery, return, and repair terms. Ask whether the battery is new or guaranteed above a stated health level, whether water resistance is warranted after refurbishment, and what parts were replaced.
  4. Inspect the screen and cameras. Look for burn-in, green tint at low brightness, dead pixels, uneven touch response, scratches near the fingerprint sensor, and camera-lens damage; older S21 FE units may show more wear.
  5. Confirm storage and identity. Neither phone supports microSD in the cited U.S. specifications, so 256GB may be preferable if the price difference is reasonable. Check the IMEI and the seller’s stated unlocked status.
  6. Install available updates after setup. Open Settings → Software update → Download and install; timing varies by model, carrier, and market. Samsung update instructions.
