The Galaxy S21 is the smaller, lighter choice; the Galaxy S21 FE gives you a larger screen and higher stated battery capacity. Their camera hardware differs, but the specifications alone do not establish which takes better photos. Processor and software details also vary by model and region, so anyone buying used should verify the exact unit—not just the name on the listing.

Which one is easier to handle?
Choose the S21 for a smaller phone
The S21 is 3.3mm narrower and 4mm shorter than the S21 FE, with the same listed 7.9mm thickness. Samsung lists its weight as 169g for Sub6 or 171g for mmWave, compared with 177g for the FE. Those differences make the S21 the more compact option on paper, although hand comfort depends on the person.
#1 Best Overall
- The Galaxy S21 FE sports a sleek polycarbonate back with a premium matte finish that resists fingerprints and feels smooth in hand, giving it a stylish yet practical design.
Choose the S21 FE for a larger display
The FE’s 6.4-inch screen is 0.2 inches larger than the S21’s 6.2-inch screen. Both are FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X panels. Samsung lists a 48–120Hz range for the S21 and 120Hz for the FE; that specification does not establish a difference in overall display quality.
Does the S21 FE have better battery life?
Samsung lists typical capacities of 4,500mAh for the S21 FE and 4,000mAh for the S21, so the FE has the higher stated capacity. Capacity alone cannot show which phone lasts longer in everyday use. Screen use, settings, network conditions, software, and especially battery wear on a second-hand phone affect runtime. Treat the number as a capacity comparison, not an endurance-test result.

Which phone has the better cameras?
The rear camera setups are not identical. Samsung lists a 64MP telephoto camera for the S21 and an 8MP 3x telephoto camera for the FE; both have 12MP wide and 12MP ultrawide cameras. At the front, Samsung lists a 10MP camera on the S21 and a 32MP camera on the FE.

Those figures describe hardware, not comparative image quality. Megapixel count alone cannot establish which phone produces better photos, and the specifications cited here do not provide a controlled camera comparison. Choose based on the camera features you need rather than assuming the higher megapixel number guarantees a better result.
Are the processors the same?
Both phones are listed with Snapdragon 888 or Exynos 2100 processor options. Samsung says the processor depends on region and mobile operator, so the phone’s name is not enough to confirm which chip a particular unit contains. If the processor matters to you, check the exact model code and the seller’s regional version before buying.
How to check software support for a specific unit
Update status is model-specific. Samsung’s record for the S21 FE model SM-G990B2 lists an Android 16 update released September 29, 2026, with a security patch level of August 5, 2026. A separate record for the Japanese S21 model SCG09 lists Android 15, released November 12, 2025, with a September 1, 2025 security patch level. These records describe those variants only; they do not establish the current status of every regional model.

- Find the phone’s exact model code in its settings or on the device documentation.
- Open Samsung’s update history for S21 FE model SM-G990B2 or update history for Japanese S21 model SCG09, as applicable.
- Match the code to the record and check the latest listed Android version, release date, and security patch level. If the exact model or region is different, look up its own Samsung update history rather than treating either example as universal.
Should you buy the Galaxy S21 or S21 FE?
- Pick the S21 if compact dimensions and lower listed weight matter most.
- Pick the S21 FE if you prefer the larger screen or want the higher stated battery capacity.
- Compare the exact variants if you care about processor or software status; both can have different specifications or update records by region and model code.
- For a used or refurbished phone, assess the actual device’s condition and price as well as its specifications. Battery capacity on the spec sheet cannot reveal how much wear the unit’s battery has.
The official figures cited here do not establish current used-device prices, seller reliability, real-world battery endurance, or which camera performs better in a direct test. Those are separate checks to make when considering a specific listing.
