Which Samsung Galaxy gets the most updates?
Among the Galaxy models covered here, the S26 series offers the strongest remaining support runway as of October 13, 2026. Samsung’s S26 announcement promises seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates from the global launch date. Samsung announced the same nominal term for the S24 series in 2024, but those years began earlier. A phone’s advertised support duration is therefore only part of the buying decision: the launch date tells you when the commitment started.

For a midrange purchase, the Galaxy A57 5G and A37 5G carry a substantial, but shorter, commitment: up to six generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades and up to six years of security updates, according to Samsung’s announcement. “Up to” matters: the commitment is not a promise that every regional variant will receive every update on the same date.

The S26’s US general-availability date is not a universal release date for every country or carrier. The support terms in the table are Samsung’s published commitments, not independent estimates of how long a phone will stay fast, receive a particular feature, or remain physically usable. Why OS upgrades and security updates are different
Samsung describes two separate parts of support. An OS-upgrade generation refers to a major software-platform upgrade, while security updates address vulnerabilities and related protections. A phone can receive security maintenance without receiving a new OS generation, so “seven years of updates” alone is less informative than checking both figures separately.
Neither number tells you the exact release cadence. A long security-update term does not, by itself, promise a monthly patch for every year of ownership, and an OS-generation count does not establish the date each version reaches your handset. Samsung’s 2022 policy announcement said timing and features may vary and that hardware specifications must support the upgrade experience. Treat the figures as the length of Samsung’s stated support commitment, not as a guarantee of identical software, features, or rollout dates across models.

How to choose between S26, S24, A57 and A37
Choose the S26 series for the longest remaining runway
If support longevity is your main criterion and you are buying new, the S26 series is the straightforward choice among the documented families. The commitment applies to the series, but the available evidence does not establish that one S26 variant receives a longer support term than another. Choose between S26, S26+ and S26 Ultra based on the size, features and budget you want—not on an assumed difference in their software-support duration. Samsung’s US announcement names Amazon Stores, Best Buy, Samsung Experience Stores, Samsung.com and carriers as US retail channels, but that is not confirmation of current inventory or availability in your market.
Consider the S24 only after accounting for its earlier start
The S24 still has a seven-generation/seven-year headline policy, but that promise began with its earlier launch. If it costs substantially less where you live, it may still make sense; Samsung’s published information does not establish current prices or how much support remains for a specific S24 model on the day you buy. Compare the actual local price and the phone’s launch-to-purchase interval rather than assuming its term resets when you purchase it.

Look at A57 5G or A37 5G when a midrange model fits better
The A57 5G and A37 5G trade the S-series seven-year maximum for up to six years of security updates and up to six generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades. That is a substantial support promise for a lower-tier line. Select between them using the price and features of the exact regional versions available to you; the published support term alone does not establish which offers better hardware value.
Do not infer support from a model family name alone
Samsung’s earlier four-generation/five-year policy applied to select eligible devices, including listed S21 and S22 models, not every phone sold under those series names. Likewise, a commitment made for one model or series should not be transferred automatically to another. Verify the full model number, not just the marketing name, especially when comparing carrier-sold and unlocked variants.

How to verify support for your exact phone
- Identify the full model and sales region. Check the model number on the product listing or the phone’s settings, and confirm the country where the device was sold. A shared family name does not prove identical update eligibility across markets.
- Read the commitment for that model. Confirm both the OS-upgrade count and the security-update period in Samsung’s announcement or regional support information. Do not substitute a policy statement for a different model.
- Check the launch start, not your purchase date. The published term begins from the stated launch point, not from when you activate or buy a phone. An older model bought new does not receive a newly restarted support clock.
- Check the current regional update listing. Samsung’s Japan software-version page, updated October 7, 2026, illustrates that current software versions are listed by regional model. Use the relevant local Samsung support page for your own market rather than treating the Japanese list as a worldwide schedule.
- Ask the carrier if the device is carrier-sold. Samsung directs carrier customers to carrier-specific pages for update information. Confirm update timing and eligibility with the carrier as well as checking Samsung’s model-specific details.
- Recheck before purchase if support is decisive. Availability and timing can vary by model and region. Confirm the exact variant and current local availability with the seller or carrier instead of relying on a listing for a different country.
What a long support promise does—and does not—guarantee
A longer support term can make a phone a more sensible candidate for keeping over multiple upgrade cycles: it provides a longer stated window for software upgrades and security maintenance. Samsung President and Head of MX Business TM Roh described the company’s longevity aim in its February 10, 2022 announcement: “We work hard to bring our Galaxy users innovative mobile experiences that are built to last. And many of our customers are choosing to keep their devices for longer, whether they love their specific smartphone model or want to help contribute to a more sustainable world.” That statement explains the rationale; the specific commitments are the model- and series-level promises in the launch announcements.
Software support is not a measured useful-life rating. It cannot tell you whether a battery will retain enough capacity, whether a screen or charging port will need repair, whether performance will suit your future apps, or whether a new feature will be available on your variant. The evidence here establishes support terms, not battery endurance, repair costs, performance over time, or an independently tested lifespan. If you plan to keep a phone for years, weigh those physical and practical considerations separately from the update policy.

How Samsung’s policy has changed over time
The current commitments are longer than Samsung’s earlier policy for selected phones. In February 2022, Samsung said select devices—including eligible S21 and S22 models—could receive up to four generations of One UI/Android OS upgrades and up to five years of security updates. The statement also cautioned that update timing and features could vary and depend on hardware capability. That history helps explain why an older Galaxy’s support cannot be inferred from a newer series’ promise: the policy is tied to specified eligible devices and their launch-era commitments.
For a buyer choosing among the models documented here, the useful order is: compare the remaining support runway from launch, check both OS and security terms, verify the regional model and carrier, then decide whether the phone’s features and local price justify it. On that basis, S26 is the leading choice for maximum remaining support, S24 is a possible lower-cost alternative only if its shorter remaining runway is acceptable, and A57/A37 offer a six-year-class option for buyers who prefer a midrange Galaxy.
