Samsung Galaxy phones offer a StandBy-style “charging display” experience, but the exact wording and location of the setting depends on your model and One UI version. On supported devices, you can get a big, clock-first screen that shows widgets while your phone is docked or charging.
This guide walks you through finding the feature, turning it on, customizing it, and making it behave the way you expect—plus what to do when your phone doesn’t show a StandBy toggle.

What Samsung Means by StandBy (and why it matters)
“StandBy” is a charging-based display mode concept: when your Galaxy phone is plugged in (often with a dock or landscape orientation), it prioritizes a readable clock and useful glance information like weather or calendar cues.

Check Your Prerequisites
Before you hunt through menus, confirm the basics. Samsung doesn’t expose every “charging display” feature on every device.
1) Verify One UI and Android versions
Go to Settings → About phone and look for One UI version and Android version. StandBy-like charging display options typically appear on newer One UI builds (commonly One UI 6.x / Android 14 on recent flagships).
2) Confirm your model is in the supported line
On the Galaxy side, these charging display features are most likely to show up on current generations (e.g., Galaxy S and newer Note-equivalent timelines) and may vary across A-series and older flagships.
3) Make sure you’re using the right charging scenario
- If the feature is tied to landscape, test with the phone in a dock or on a stand.
- If it’s tied to “charging state,” use a known-good charger/cable and wait 30–60 seconds after plugging in.
Enable StandBy on Samsung Galaxy (supported devices)
On phones that support the feature, you’ll usually find a StandBy option under display or screensaver-related settings. Because Samsung’s UI wording can differ by One UI version, follow the checks below in order.
Method A: Search for StandBy in Settings
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap the Search bar at the top.
- Type: StandBy.
- Open the result that matches the StandBy/charging display setting.
- Turn StandBy On.
Method B: Use the Display → Screensaver path
On many One UI builds, the setting lives under screensaver/ambient/charging display categories. Try this sequence:
- Go to Settings → Display.
- Tap Screensaver (or Screen saver).
- Look for an option named StandBy, Charging display, or a similar label.
- Enable it and confirm any “dock/charging” condition toggles are turned on.
Method C: Use Galaxy Labs / feature flags (if present)
Some Samsung features roll out gradually and can appear under experimental areas. If you have a Galaxy Labs or similar app in your apps list, check for display-related experiments and keep them enabled if they show up.

Customize the Look: Clock, Widgets, and Display Behavior
Once StandBy is enabled, the next step is shaping it to how you use your phone—bedside, desk, or nightstand.

Choose what shows up
Open the StandBy settings page and look for options like clock style, widget categories (weather/calendar), and content priority. Samsung typically lets you pick from multiple clock designs and widget layouts.
Set the behavior rules
Common toggles you may see:
- When charging: enable so it triggers on plug-in.
- While docked: enable if your phone is often in a holder.
- Turn on on orientation or landscape: enable if you want it to trigger when rotated.
- Screen timeout or duration: set how long StandBy stays visible after activation.
Brightness and power considerations
StandBy should never blind you at night, so check whether the mode uses a lower brightness profile. If your device offers a Brightness slider or “use adaptive brightness” toggle within StandBy, set it conservatively.
Make It Work Reliably While Charging
If StandBy triggers inconsistently, it’s usually one of three things: charging doesn’t register as “real charging,” the phone isn’t in the expected orientation, or a power-saving rule interrupts it.
Use a dock/stand and test orientation
- Place the phone in a stable holder so it can stay in landscape if required.
- Plug in, then wait 30–60 seconds. Some charging display modes animate in after the battery/charging state stabilizes.
Turn off power-saving blockers (or exempt StandBy)
- Open Settings → Battery and device care.
- Tap Battery.
- Check whether Power saving is enabled.
- If it is, try turning it off temporarily to test StandBy behavior.
If your phone includes an option to exempt specific features from battery restrictions, use it for charging display if available.

Confirm screen timeout and “auto-off” rules
Go to Settings → Display and review Screen timeout and similar display sleep settings. If those rules are extremely aggressive, StandBy might cut off quickly.

If You Don’t See StandBy: Best Samsung Alternatives
Not every Galaxy device shows a labeled “StandBy” mode. If your Settings search returns nothing, you can still get a very similar “charging clock” experience using Samsung features.
Alternative 1: Always On Display (AOD)
AOD is the most direct substitute: it keeps a clock visible while the phone is idle. If you want a constant bedside clock, this is often the simplest option.
- Open Settings → Lock screen.
- Tap Always On Display.
- Turn it On.
- Choose a style: clock only, detailed modes, or schedule options if offered.
- Set a schedule (e.g., night hours) if your battery plan matters.
Alternative 2: Screensaver (non-StandBy)
If your phone shows Screensaver but not StandBy, you can still display a clock or photo-themed screen after charging or idle.
Recommended Free Tools
- Go to Settings → Display.
- Open Screensaver.
- Select the style that shows a clock or minimal UI.
- Set the activation condition (charging/dock/idle) if present.
Alternative 3: Good Lock + LockStar / Clock-related modules
For extra control over clock appearance and lock screen behavior, Samsung’s Good Lock ecosystem can help. Availability depends on your region and Samsung account support.
- Install Good Lock from Galaxy Store.
- Open the app and install the relevant module (commonly LockStar for lock screen customization).
- Pick clock styles and layout behaviors.
- Use AOD or lock screen rules to achieve the “glance clock” effect.
Alternative 4: Media output + ambient-style apps
If your goal is the “kitchen/desk display vibe” more than a specific StandBy feature, you can use third-party clock screens while docked—just watch battery impact and privacy permissions.

1) StandBy never activates
- Check orientation: rotate the phone to the expected landscape/portrait orientation and plug in again.
- Verify charging state: try a different cable/charger (a slow charger can behave differently).
- Disable power saving: test with Power saving off.
- Turn off battery optimization for Settings-related components if your phone allows it (some security/battery layers are aggressive).
2) StandBy starts, then immediately turns off
- Increase the screen timeout setting temporarily to test.
- Check if adaptive sleep / “touch to wake” behaviors are overriding the display mode.
- Disable any “reduce motion” or display-hiding accessibility shortcuts that might affect always-on behavior.
3) The clock/widgets are blank or missing
Blank widgets usually come down to permissions or data sync delays. Try the following:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open Settings → Apps and confirm the relevant system/widget providers aren’t restricted.
- Make sure Location is allowed if weather widgets require it.
- Check Wi‑Fi or mobile data availability. Weather widgets often need an active connection after a reboot.
- Restart the phone to force widget refresh.
4) StandBy conflicts with Always On Display
On some One UI versions, AOD and charging display features can overlap in confusing ways. If you enabled both, try disabling AOD temporarily and test StandBy. If StandBy works better alone, you can later re-enable AOD with a schedule (like night hours only).
5) You changed settings but nothing updates
Do a quick “hard refresh” by toggling the StandBy switch off and back on, then re-plug the phone. If it’s still stuck, reboot once.

Samsung gives you multiple ways to show clocks. Here’s how to decide quickly.
| Feature | Best for | Typical behavior | Main downside |
|---|---|---|---|
| StandBy (charging display) | Bedside/desk while plugged in | Triggers on charging/dock with a glance layout | Not available on every model; can cut off if settings block it |
| Always On Display (AOD) | Clock visibility when idle | Shows clock continuously (optionally scheduled) | Battery impact if left on 24/7 |
| Screensaver | Idle/charging photo or clock fallback | Activates after idle or charging conditions | Less “standout” than a dedicated StandBy mode |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming it’s on your phone: if StandBy isn’t listed in Settings search, use AOD or Screensaver instead of hunting deeper.
- Ignoring battery saver: power-saving modes can suppress always-on-style displays.
- Using an unstable charger: cheap cables and inconsistent power can prevent the “charging display” trigger.
- Setting brightness too high: StandBy often looks great—but it can be harsh at night if you don’t tune it.
FAQs
Is Samsung StandBy the same as iPhone StandBy?
It’s the same idea—displaying a clock and useful glance info while the phone is charging—but the feature name, UI layout, and widget options are different. Samsung’s implementation usually relies on One UI charging/screen display settings or a close substitute like AOD and Screensaver.

Most often it’s either (1) your model/One UI build doesn’t include the StandBy option, (2) the phone isn’t in the correct orientation/dock scenario, or (3) power-saving and display timeout rules are stopping the mode.

Will StandBy drain my battery faster?
Any always-on or charging-display feature adds power use. If battery impact matters, schedule AOD (instead of using it 24/7) or limit StandBy duration if the settings provide a “stay on” timer.
Can I use different widgets during StandBy?
On supported devices, StandBy usually offers widget/content choices in its settings. If your phone doesn’t show StandBy, you can approximate a similar setup with AOD clock styles and lock screen widgets depending on your One UI features.
What should I do if widgets are blank or stuck?
Confirm required permissions (often Location for weather), verify your network connection, and restart the phone. If the issue persists, toggle the StandBy setting off/on and re-test while plugged in.
Bottom Line
If your Galaxy phone supports StandBy, you can turn it on from Settings using search for StandBy or by checking Display → Screensaver and enabling the charging/dock trigger. For devices that don’t offer the labeled feature, Always On Display and Screensaver can still deliver the same “bedside clock” outcome.
Once enabled, test with your actual charger and dock setup, then fine-tune brightness and power-saving rules so the display stays reliable at night.
