There is no universal set of Galaxy settings that every major update resets, and Samsung does not say that every owner must change the same options. Start by checking which One UI version is installed and reading that update’s summary. Then review only the areas affected in your use: notification and Quick settings layout, lock-screen privacy, optional Galaxy AI features, app permissions, battery behavior, display smoothness, and app or system updates.

The paths below use Samsung’s documented One UI 7 examples. Samsung says menus and functions can vary by device, carrier, and network, and its support page noted that One UI 8 was rolling out when it was accessed. Treat One UI 7 instructions as release-specific examples, not universal directions for every Galaxy phone or tablet.

1. Check the installed One UI version and read what changed

Do this before changing settings. A menu that moved in One UI 7 may be unchanged in another release, while a feature shown in Samsung’s guide may not exist on your model, carrier build, or tablet.

  1. Open the update page. In Settings, choose Software update or System updates, depending on the device, then tap Download and install.
  2. Open the latest update details. Tap Last update if that option appears. The page can show the contents of the most recent package and the One UI version it introduced.
  3. Confirm the installed version. Go to Settings > About phone (or About tablet) > Software information. Record the One UI version and Android version shown there.
  4. Read the device’s own help. Near the bottom of Settings, look for User Manual, Tips and User Manual, Help, Tips and user Guide, or Tips and Help. A What’s new section can explain release-specific behavior.

Samsung announced on March 18, 2025, that the One UI 7 rollout was planned to start April 7, initially naming Galaxy S24 models and Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6, with expansion later. Samsung qualified the timing and availability by market, device, and other conditions. Those dates describe that historical rollout announcement; they do not identify the latest version available to every reader today.

2. Use a symptom-led review instead of resetting everything

After confirming the version, look for changes you can actually observe. The table separates a preference decision from a fault that needs troubleshooting.

What you notice Review first Decision to make
Notifications and Quick settings open differently Panel layout and swipe directions Keep separate panels or combine them
Private information appears on the lock screen Lock-screen notification style and app visibility Show useful detail, icons, dots, or less content
An app cannot use a feature That app’s permissions and updates Allow only the access its function requires
Battery life or charging behavior changed Background power use, Power saving, and location-related activity Trade display or background activity for endurance
Scrolling looks less fluid Motion smoothness and whether Power saving is active Prefer Adaptive smoothness or lower power use
An app freezes or crashes Galaxy Store, Google Play, Google Play system, and app permissions Update first; clear data only as a later step

Do not treat a changed appearance as proof that the update reset every setting. Check the specific control involved and change it only when its current behavior does not suit you.

3. Notification and Quick settings panels in One UI 7

One UI 7 changed the default navigation of these panels on supported Galaxy devices. The location of your swipe determines which panel opens.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand the new swipe areas

  • Swipe down from the top left or center to open notifications.
  • Swipe down from the top right to open Quick settings.
  • Swipe left or right to move between the two panels.

If the split arrangement makes one-handed use harder, Samsung documents a combined option that resembles the older arrangement.

Combine notifications and Quick settings

  1. Swipe down from the top right to open Quick settings.
  2. Tap Edit (the pencil icon).
  3. Choose Panel settings.
  4. Tap Notification and quick settings view.
  5. Select Together.
  6. Go back, then tap Done.

With the panels combined, swiping down from either side opens both. If these labels do not appear, use Settings search for “notification and quick settings” and check the device’s help, because the option depends on the installed release and model.

4. Recheck notification appearance and lock-screen privacy

Open Settings > Notifications and inspect the controls that affect what you see, when you see it, and how much information is exposed.

Status-bar and pop-up behavior

Review status-bar icon display and the pop-up style. If an alert you depend on is easy to miss, make sure its app is allowed to notify and that its pop-up behavior is appropriate. If constant banners are distracting, adjust the individual app or notification category rather than silencing all notifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

App-specific notifications and categories

Notification categories let one app treat messages, calls, reminders, and promotions differently when the app supports those categories. Open the relevant app under the notification settings and inspect each category. Keep essential categories enabled and disable only the types you do not want.

Lock-screen display

Samsung’s One UI 7 guide lists lock-screen notification styles including Dot, Icons, and Cards. Choose the level of detail that matches your privacy needs:

  • Cards can make an alert’s content easier to read at a glance but may reveal more to someone viewing the locked screen.
  • Icons identify apps without presenting a full notification card.
  • Dot provides a minimal indication that notifications exist.

Check that alerts you rely on remain visible while sensitive message previews are hidden if the phone is often left where other people can see it. Exact style names and available controls can differ by software version.

5. Optional Galaxy AI, Now Brief, and Now Bar controls

These settings apply only to eligible devices and supported software. They are preference controls, not required post-update repairs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manage Now Brief content

Samsung’s One UI 7 guide says Now Brief is enabled by default on supported devices. Its content types can be managed from Settings > Galaxy AI. Turn individual content types off when the brief includes information you do not need, or leave them enabled if the summaries are useful.

Choose where Galaxy AI processes data

On devices that expose the option, open Settings > Galaxy AI and enable Process data only on device if that matches your privacy preference. The setting can affect which AI features work and how they process requests, so read the description shown on your model before confirming.

Control the Now Bar

To choose what appears in the live area on the lock screen, open Settings > Lock screen and AOD > Now bar. Disable content types you do not want surfaced there. If Galaxy AI or Now Bar is absent, that is normally an eligibility or version difference rather than a missing universal setting.

6. Check app permissions when behavior changes

An update can expose an incompatibility or make an existing permission choice more noticeable, but Samsung’s guidance does not establish that every major update resets all app permissions. Check permissions when an app cannot perform a task, when you have not used it for a long time, or when its requested access no longer makes sense.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open an app’s permission page

  1. Go to Settings > Apps.
  2. Select the affected app.
  3. Tap Permissions.
  4. Review each requested resource and choose the available access level.

Common choices include Allow only while using the app, Ask every time, and Don’t allow. Some apps show additional choices. Give an app the access required for its job, but avoid continuous access when the function does not need it. For example, a navigation app may need location while you are using navigation; a simple note viewer generally does not need microphone access.

When an app freezes or crashes

Update the app before removing its data. Check both the Galaxy Store and Google Play for updates. Samsung notes that older Android app builds may not work correctly on newer devices or software.

Also install the Google Play system update when one is offered: Settings > About phone or About tablet > Software information > Google Play system update. Restart the device after updates if the app still behaves incorrectly.

Use data clearing only as a later step

Clearing an app’s cache or data is more disruptive than checking permissions and updates. Clearing data can sign you out, remove downloaded content, reset in-app preferences, or delete locally stored information. Back up anything the app does not synchronize before using that option, and follow the app maker’s recovery instructions if its data is important.

7. Investigate battery drain without applying a blanket optimization recipe

Short-term battery changes after a major update can have several causes, including background app activity, location use, indexing, or a power-saving mode that changed display behavior. Treat the battery section as troubleshooting for an observed problem, not a list of toggles every owner should change.

Find apps using unusual background power

Open the battery settings on your model and look for apps with excessive background consumption. Samsung advises checking background apps and adjusting settings or location services when battery life is reduced after One UI 7. If one app dominates usage, update it, restrict its background activity where the app allows, or review whether its location access is necessary.

Inspect Power saving options

Samsung’s One UI 7 support information says Power saving can turn on Dark mode or set the screen timeout to 30 seconds. Open Settings > Battery > Power saving and review those options. A 30-second timeout may extend endurance but can interrupt reading or navigation; Dark mode changes appearance and may be preferable on some displays, but it is not a guarantee of a particular battery gain.

Check motion smoothness

If scrolling appears less smooth, determine whether Standard motion smoothness or Power saving is active. Samsung notes that Adaptive smoothness is unavailable while Power saving is on. Choose the setting that fits your priority: Adaptive for a more fluid feel when supported, or Standard and stronger power restrictions when endurance matters more.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not promise that one setting will restore battery life. Compare usage over your normal routine after each meaningful change so you can identify which adjustment actually helped.

8. Look for a follow-up system update

Samsung says it often releases software updates after a One UI upgrade to deliver security patches, fixes, or corrections for issues such as freezing and crashes. When a problem persists, return to Settings > Software update or System updates and choose Download and install.

A follow-up package is not guaranteed to be available for every model or region. If the page reports that the software is current, continue with app updates, permission checks, and the device-specific troubleshooting guidance rather than repeatedly forcing a scan.

9. A practical order for your first day after updating

This sequence limits unnecessary changes and gives you a record of what you adjusted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the version: save the One UI and Android versions from About phone/tablet > Software information.
  2. Read the update summary: use Last update and the device’s What’s new help.
  3. Test navigation: open notifications and Quick settings from each swipe area; combine the panels only if the split layout does not suit you.
  4. Test important alerts: send yourself a message or reminder and confirm its app notification, pop-up, and lock-screen behavior.
  5. Check privacy-sensitive displays: inspect lock-screen cards, icons, or dots and review Now Bar or Now Brief if supported.
  6. Test essential apps: open calling, messaging, banking, camera, navigation, authentication, and work apps. If one fails, check its updates and permissions.
  7. Observe battery use: look for an unusually high background consumer before enabling aggressive power restrictions.
  8. Install available follow-up updates: check Samsung software, Galaxy Store, Google Play, and Google Play system updates.

Keep a note of any setting you change. If a problem appears later, you can reverse the last change instead of resetting unrelated preferences.

10. What can differ between Galaxy devices

Samsung explicitly warns that features and functions vary by device, carrier, and network. A phone may show a menu that a tablet lacks; a carrier build may delay a feature; and a regional release may use a different label. One UI version alone does not guarantee identical screens.

  • Use Settings search when a documented path does not match your menus.
  • Check the model’s built-in manual or Samsung’s device-specific help for the exact label.
  • Confirm that a feature is supported before treating its absence as an update failure.
  • Do not assume the timing of an update on another Galaxy model applies to yours.

The safest post-update rule is simple: verify the release, read its notes, test the controls that affect your routine, and troubleshoot the symptom you can reproduce. Avoid broad permission resets or power-saving changes unless a specific app, privacy concern, or battery behavior gives you a reason.
