Turn on Samsung Galaxy notification history at Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history, then switch it on. The phone starts recording at that moment, so alerts received before activation cannot be recovered there. If the page is empty immediately afterward, receive another notification and check again.
The feature is useful for reviewing a notification you dismissed, checking a snoozed alert, or finding which app made an unexpected notification sound. Samsung’s menu names and availability can differ by Galaxy model and software version.

What Samsung notification history is for
Notification history is a built-in Android setting on supported Galaxy phones and tablets. It keeps a temporary list of notifications so you can inspect alerts that are no longer in the notification shade. Samsung describes it as a way to review dismissed or snoozed notifications and notifications received during the recent retention period.

History is not a complete backup of an app. It records notification entries, not everything that the originating app contains. For example, Samsung’s Colombia support guidance says WhatsApp notification text may be visible, while images and audio are not available through notification history.

How to turn on notification history on a Samsung Galaxy
Use the following path in the Settings app:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Advanced settings.
- Tap Notification history.
- Turn on the switch at the top of the page.
- Return to this screen later to review captured notifications.
The switch does not populate old alerts. Samsung says the history begins recording from activation, so an alert that arrived earlier is outside the feature’s record. Enable the setting as soon as you want future alerts retained.
What to expect the first time you enable it
A blank page immediately after activation is normal. Samsung US instructs users to return after receiving new notifications; the page does not contain a historical backlog created before the switch was enabled. To test it, leave the Settings screen, wait for an ordinary app notification, then open the same menu again.
How to review a notification later
- Open Settings.
- Choose Notifications.
- Open Advanced settings.
- Tap Notification history.
- Read the entries listed on the page and identify the app associated with the alert.
Use the app name and the notification text to work out what you missed. If you are investigating a sound, note which application appears next to the entry and then open that app’s notification settings from the normal Galaxy notification controls if you want to change its behavior.

What the history captures—and what it cannot recover

Can you see notifications you already cleared?
You can see a cleared notification only if notification history was already enabled when that notification arrived. Clearing the shade and reviewing history are separate actions: clearing removes the item from the normal notification panel, while history can retain a captured record for its available window.
If you enable the switch after clearing an important alert, the setting cannot reconstruct it. Check the originating app directly for any separate inbox, activity log, message list, or account history instead; notification history itself has no pre-activation archive.
How to use history to identify an unexpected alert sound
When the phone makes a sound and you do not know why, use a repeatable check:

- Wait until the sound has stopped and open Settings.
- Go to Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history.
- Look for the newest entry created at approximately the time of the sound.
- Read the app name and visible notification text.
- If the source is an app you do not want making that sound, open that app’s notification controls through the phone’s notification settings and adjust the relevant category or alert behavior.
History can confirm which app generated a recorded notification. It cannot prove that every sound came from a notification: a sound may occur when no notification entry is created, or the relevant entry may have expired under the phone’s retention behavior.

Can notification history show deleted WhatsApp messages?
It may show the text that was present in a WhatsApp notification captured after history was enabled. Samsung Colombia specifically says images and audio are not available in notification history. Therefore, the feature should not be treated as a way to restore a deleted WhatsApp conversation, retrieve media, or reproduce the complete message thread.
What appears depends on what was delivered as a notification. History stores the notification representation that Galaxy received, not a separate copy of the WhatsApp account’s data. For a complete conversation or media, use WhatsApp’s own supported chat and backup features rather than relying on Galaxy notification history.
Android and Galaxy version differences
Samsung Colombia’s published guidance identifies Galaxy devices running Android 11 or later for this feature. Treat that as Samsung’s regional compatibility guidance rather than a guarantee for every country, carrier edition, model, or later software configuration.
One UI updates can move settings or change labels. A current phone may show the path exactly as Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history, while another model may present a slightly different screen. Samsung’s support material warns that Settings screens vary by device and software version.

There is no complete Samsung-published version-by-version matrix in the support guidance. The practical checks are the phone’s Android and One UI versions, the exact Galaxy model, and the regional software build. If the menu is absent, do not assume the phone is defective; verify those details against model-specific Samsung support information.

The Notification history option is not listed
- Confirm that you opened Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings, rather than the notification controls for an individual app.
- Check the phone’s Android and One UI versions in Settings and compare them with Samsung’s guidance for your exact Galaxy model and region.
- Look for a software update or a model-specific support page if the menu labels differ.
- Do not infer support solely from another Galaxy phone; Samsung states that availability and screens can vary by device and software version.
The page is empty after switching it on
An empty page directly after activation is expected. History has no earlier entries to display. Receive a new notification, wait for it to arrive, and return to the same screen. If new alerts still do not appear, check whether the app actually generated a notification and whether its notification permission or alert settings allow one to be delivered.
An entry disappeared
Samsung Colombia says dismissed notifications are automatically removed after 24 hours. A record can therefore vanish simply because its retention period ended. Turning the history switch off also deletes records stored up to that point, so avoid disabling it if you still need the captured entries.

The entry does not contain the information you expected
Notification history is limited to the notification content Galaxy received. It is not an app database. Samsung’s WhatsApp example illustrates the limitation: visible text may be available, while images and audio are not. Open the originating app when you need the full item, conversation, or media.
Managing the feature without losing records
Leave the switch enabled if you want a continuing record of future alerts. Because Samsung Colombia says disabling it deletes the stored history, switching it off is a clearing action as well as a settings change.
When you no longer need a particular record, the practical option is to let the supported retention window remove it naturally rather than turning the feature off and deleting all stored entries at once. Under Samsung Colombia’s guidance, dismissed entries are removed after 24 hours.
A quick checklist for recovering a missed alert
- Open Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history.
- Verify that the switch is on before expecting future alerts to appear.
- If the list is blank, generate or wait for a new notification and check again.
- Read the app name and visible text in the captured entry.
- Remember that alerts from before activation are unavailable in this feature.
- Check the list within the applicable retention period; Samsung Colombia specifies 24 hours for dismissed notifications.
- Do not expect WhatsApp images or audio, or a complete app conversation, to appear.
- Do not turn the switch off while you need the saved entries, because Samsung Colombia says doing so deletes them.
- If the menu is missing, verify the Android/One UI version, model, and region with Samsung’s model-specific support guidance.
Bottom line
Enable Galaxy notification history before you need it: Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history. It can reveal captured dismissed or snoozed alerts and identify the app behind a notification sound, but it is temporary, begins only after activation, and does not replace an app’s own message or media history.
