If your Galaxy phone or tablet will not output 60 Hz to an external display, the cause is almost always in the setup rather than in one universal setting. The outcome depends on four things: the exact Galaxy model and software, whether you are using Samsung DeX or screen mirroring, the cable, adapter or dock in the signal path, and the display’s supported modes. Samsung’s official troubleshooting advice points to the same checks: device and display compatibility, a secure and undamaged connection, and trying another device or display. Samsung’s official pages do not promise 60 Hz on every Galaxy model, monitor, resolution or adapter, so the fastest route to an answer is to isolate which link in the chain is limiting the signal.
Start by identifying your exact setup
“Samsung” is too broad to diagnose. A Galaxy S-series phone, a Galaxy Tab, and an older device can behave differently, and output capability also depends on the software version installed. Before changing anything, write down the details that affect the result.

- Exact Galaxy model number (found in Settings > About phone or About tablet)
- One UI and Android version (Settings > About phone > Software information)
- Connection mode: Samsung DeX or screen mirroring
- Cable, adapter, hub or dock model, including whether it sits between the phone and the display
- Display model, the input (HDMI port number) in use, and the resolution selected on the display or in DeX settings
- The refresh rate the display itself reports, which is more reliable than assuming the phone’s own screen rate applies
DeX versus screen mirroring
Samsung treats DeX and screen mirroring as separate ways of using an external display. DeX presents a desktop-style workspace on the monitor, while mirroring copies what the phone shows. Samsung’s DeX how-to documents wired USB-C-to-HDMI connection steps, but it does not make a blanket refresh-rate promise for every device. Establish which mode you are using first, because the troubleshooting path for each is different.

| Galaxy model and software | DeX is available only on supported devices, and support lists are version-specific | Your exact model is on Samsung’s current DeX device guidance |
| Connection mode | DeX and mirroring are separate modes with separate settings | You know which mode is active when the problem appears |
| Cable, adapter or dock | Every accessory in the chain can limit the signal | The accessory is rated for the video output you need, and it is connected directly where possible |
| Display input and resolution | The monitor sets which resolution and refresh combinations it will accept | The correct HDMI input is selected and the resolution is one the display lists as supported |
Map the signal path
A wired external display connection has several links, and any one of them can cap the output. Work through them in this order:
#1 Best Overall
- The Anker Advantage: Join the 80 million+ powered by our leading technology.
- Vivid Video: The HDMI adapter lets you connect to any TV or display with an HDMI port to stream video in up to 4K resolution.
- Plug and Play: Instantly turn your laptop’s USB-C port into an HDMI port, with no installation necessary. This product does not support charging or Power Delivery (PD).
- Premium Construction: A lightweight aluminum casing allows for greater heat dissipation, while the reinforced braided-nylon cable is designed to withstand the twists and tugs of daily use.
- Compatibility: Supports USB-C DP Alt mode, USB4, and Thunderbolt connections.
- Phone or tablet USB-C port: lint, debris or a loose fit can interrupt the connection.
- Cable or adapter: a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable helps only when your exact Galaxy model supports wired video output and the accessory supports the mode you want. A new cable is not a guaranteed fix until the cause is isolated.
- Hub or dock, if present: it adds another point of failure and may share bandwidth with other ports.
- Display HDMI input: the monitor must be set to the input the cable is plugged into.
- Display resolution and mode: the refresh rate you want has to be available at the resolution you selected.
Step-by-step diagnosis
- Record your setup. Capture the model, software version, connection mode, accessory model, display model and selected resolution, along with the refresh rate the display reports. Samsung’s compatibility and display-mode guidance depends on these details.
- Confirm device support. Check Samsung’s current DeX guidance for your exact model. Do not assume that an older device list applies to a newer Galaxy, or the reverse.
- Reseat and inspect the connection. Unplug and reconnect both ends firmly, then look for bent pins, cracked housings or a frayed cable. Samsung’s troubleshooting specifically calls for a secure connection and a check for cable damage.
- Bypass the hub or dock. If one is in use, connect the phone directly to the display with a known-compatible adapter or cable. This is a diagnostic comparison. If the picture then reaches the expected refresh rate, the accessory chain is the likely cause; if it does not, the problem is more likely in the phone, the display or the mode settings.
- Check the monitor. Select the correct HDMI input, choose a resolution the monitor lists as supported, and read the monitor’s manual for its refresh-rate limits at that resolution. Samsung notes that display compatibility and settings can affect DeX behavior.
- Swap one variable at a time. Try the same Galaxy on a different display, and if you have one, try a different compatible device on the same display and cable. If the fault follows the phone, look at the phone’s settings and software. If it follows the display, look at its input and mode limits. If it stays with the cable path, replace or re-test that part.
If the source is a Windows PC
If the image comes from a Windows PC rather than a Galaxy phone or tablet, the diagnosis moves to the computer’s graphics output. Open the display settings in Windows and check the advanced display options for the refresh rate and resolution the monitor is actually receiving. Samsung Korea’s monitor guidance states that the available resolution and frequency depend on the graphics card’s specifications and on the HDMI version and cable in use. That is general PC guidance, not evidence of a limit on Galaxy phones or DeX.
What is established and what is not
Samsung’s DeX troubleshooting page lists device compatibility, display settings, connection condition and supported resolution as the items to check. Samsung’s developer documentation describes Full HD external display support and lists additional DeX modes for SEP 9.0. Those pages do not establish a universal 60 Hz output guarantee across all devices, resolutions and adapters, and they do not establish a universal cap at 30 Hz either. Avoid stating that every Galaxy outputs 60 Hz, that every adapter works, or that every setup is limited to a particular rate.

Two sources are older or regional. Samsung Developer’s device and mode information may be tied to a specific software version, so treat it as a reference point rather than a complete current compatibility list. Samsung Support Korea’s accessory guide is dated November 12, 2020, and describes Full HD and 16:9 conditions for named older DeX accessories; it also notes that monitor resolution varies by model. Use it to understand the principle, not as a current specification for your hardware.
