Use Galaxy Enhance-X if you have a compatible Galaxy phone and need a focused correction such as moiré removal, shadow or reflection cleanup, lens-distortion correction, or old-photo restoration. Use Google Photos if you want a general editor tied to photo backup and organization, need access from Android and iOS, or rely on Google’s broader AI toolkit. Neither is universally better: the right choice depends on your phone, the defect you are fixing, and whether editing or library management matters more.
That recommendation reflects vendor-documented capabilities, not an independent image-quality test. Tool availability can change with device model, operating-system version, account, region, memory, and app release.

Galaxy Enhance-X requires a compatible Galaxy
Enhance-X is a Samsung Galaxy app, so an iPhone, a non-Samsung Android phone, or an unsupported Galaxy cannot use it as a normal editor. Samsung’s launch announcement listed Galaxy S23, S22, S21, and S20 phones, Note20 models, and certain Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip devices running One UI 5.1 or later. That list was published in 2023; it is historical availability information, not a definitive compatibility list for October 2026.

Before relying on Enhance-X, open the current Galaxy Store listing on the phone you intend to use and check the model, One UI version, and app requirements shown there. Samsung’s August 2026 Members overview describes Enhance-X as an evolving, sometimes experimental app and warns that features may contain errors. A compatible phone therefore does not guarantee that every tool shown in a review or older screenshot will appear on your device.
Google Photos is cross-platform, but not feature-identical
Google says Photos works on Android and iOS. That makes it the practical choice when your household or workflow mixes platforms, or when you edit on a phone that is not a Galaxy. Cross-platform installation does not mean feature parity: Google’s help pages state that some tools are Pixel-only, some require a download, and eligibility can vary by device, account, region, and app version.
For Android, Google says most editing tools require Android 8.0 or later and at least 3 GB of RAM. Individual tools may require 4 GB or 6 GB, and Google warns that results can vary by device. Check the tool’s own requirement when a button is missing rather than assuming the app is broken.
A 2026 Google Photos addition has its own requirements
In an April 20, 2026 announcement, Google described a gradual global rollout of portrait touch-up controls for healing, skin smoothing, under-eye adjustment, irises, teeth, eyebrows, and lips. Google specified Android 9.0 or later and at least 4 GB of RAM for that rollout. Those conditions apply to that feature, not automatically to every Photos tool, and a gradual rollout means two otherwise eligible accounts may not see it at the same time.

What Galaxy Enhance-X actually offers
Magic enhancement versus individual controls
Enhance-X’s Magic function applies a one-tap AI improvement. Samsung also describes separate controls so you can make a narrower change instead of accepting one global adjustment. That distinction matters when an automatic edit brightens a subject but also lifts noise in the background: use the specific correction when you want to limit the intervention.
HDR intensity levels
Samsung documents HDR intensity levels from 0 through 4. The scale gives you a discrete way to decide how strongly the app expands apparent highlight and shadow detail. Samsung presents this as a product capability, not as a calibrated exposure measurement; the visual effect will depend on the original file, display, and chosen level.
Upscale for small images
The announcement says Enhance-X can upscale images under 1 megapixel by up to four times. “Up to four times” is Samsung’s stated maximum, not an independently measured increase in real detail. Upscaling can make a small image more usable for viewing or sharing, but it cannot recover information that was absent from the capture.

Targeted repair tools
- Fix Moiré: addresses repeating interference patterns commonly seen when photographing screens, textiles, or fine grilles.
- Remove Shadows: targets unwanted dark areas while preserving the rest of the frame as much as the source allows.
- Remove Reflection: is intended for glare and reflected light.
- Fix Lens Distortion: corrects geometric warping associated with lenses and shooting angles.
- Old Photo: is aimed at improving older photographs.
- Brighten, Fix Blur, and Sharpen: provide focused adjustments for exposure and apparent detail.
These names describe Samsung’s documented tools. They should not be read as a promise that every tool is installed, error-free, or identical on every supported Galaxy.

What Google Photos adds beyond basic editing
Standard composition and tone controls
Google Photos includes crop and perspective adjustments, filters, and tone controls. Its Android help also lists Auto frame, HDR effect, Portrait light, and other editing functions. These controls make Photos suitable for quick corrections even when you do not need an AI repair.
AI removal and sharpening
Magic Eraser is designed to remove distracting people or objects when the feature is available. Photo Unblur targets soft faces and other blurry subjects, while AI Enhance provides an additional automated improvement. Google’s documentation lists Move and related tools as well. Availability is conditional, so use the editor’s displayed eligibility rather than assuming a Galaxy phone receives every Pixel feature.
Portrait touch-up controls rolling out in 2026
The April 20, 2026 rollout adds separate controls for healing, smoothing, under-eye areas, irises, teeth, eyebrows, and lips. It is limited to Android 9.0 or later with at least 4 GB of RAM and is rolling out gradually worldwide. The feature is therefore useful to consider when present, but it is not a reason to switch editors if your account or device has not received it.
Ask Photos and the library workflow
Google positions Photos as a photo service as well as an editor. Backup, search, organization, and sharing sit alongside editing, and Ask Photos is part of that broader product direction. If your priority is finding and managing years of pictures across devices, that integrated workflow can outweigh a single specialist correction that another app performs better.

How to edit while preserving the original
Google Photos: choose overwrite, copy, or revert deliberately
- Open Google Photos and select the image.
- Tap Edit, then choose the adjustment or AI tool that is available on your device.
- Review the result before committing; AI output can vary by device.
- Use the save option that matches your goal: Google documents saving edits to the original or saving a copy.
- If you edited the original, open the edited image and choose Revert when you need to return to the prior version.
Saving a copy is the safer choice when you may need the untouched file for printing, evidence, or a later edit in another application.
Samsung Gallery and Enhance-X: verify the operation
- In Samsung Gallery, open the photo and enter the editing view; Samsung’s support guide covers filters, tone, crop, perspective, portrait and face effects, and Galaxy AI tools.
- When using Enhance-X, open the tool you need and inspect its save behavior before confirming the edit.
- Samsung Gallery documents Save as copy and Revert. Use those Gallery options when they are presented for the file you are editing.
- Do not assume that every Enhance-X operation is nondestructive solely because Gallery has a revert function; confirm the option in the current app version.
The general Gallery instructions are available in Samsung’s support guide. The guide is not a complete, current Enhance-X feature or compatibility matrix.
Storage, backup, and cost considerations
Google Photos storage is shared
Google states that each Google Account includes 15 GB of storage shared by Google Photos, Gmail, and Google Drive. A photo-heavy backup library can therefore consume space that email attachments and Drive files also need. Additional storage and some premium AI features may be associated with Google One, but Google also describes no-cost access for eligible users; Google One is not required for every Photos AI edit.
Enhance-X is an editor, not a storage plan
The cited Samsung material describes Enhance-X’s editing capabilities, not a separate storage allowance or backup service. Treat it as a correction tool used with your existing Gallery and backup choices. If you need automatic access to a library from multiple operating systems, evaluate the storage service independently from the editor.
Do not choose a phone from an old compatibility list
Samsung’s 2023 announcement cannot justify buying a particular current Galaxy model. Hardware, One UI version, regional availability, and app updates can change support. Check the current listing and your exact software before spending money on a device for Enhance-X.
A practical decision process
- Confirm the device. If you are on iOS or a non-Samsung Android phone, start with Google Photos. On a Galaxy, check whether Enhance-X is currently offered for your model and software.
- Name the defect. For moiré, shadows, lens distortion, reflections, or an old print, look for Enhance-X’s dedicated tool. For object removal, general blur correction, or a cross-platform workflow, check Google Photos first.
- Check eligibility before planning the edit. In Photos, verify Android version, RAM, Pixel-only restrictions, account rollout, and any required download. In Enhance-X, verify the current Galaxy Store requirements and whether the desired tool appears.
- Protect the source. Save a copy when available, especially for irreplaceable photographs. Keep the original until you have inspected the result at full size.
- Judge the actual image, not the feature name. Zoom into faces, fine text, hair, repeated patterns, and straight architectural lines. AI corrections can introduce halos, smearing, or synthetic texture even when the overall preview looks better.
- Use the other app when the first tool is missing. Running the same image through both editors is reasonable for a personal photo, but compare at the same crop and output size; there is no vendor-independent test establishing a universal winner.
Common failure modes and fixes
The Enhance-X app or tool is missing
- Check the current Galaxy Store listing for the exact model and One UI version.
- Install pending Samsung app and system updates, then reopen the app.
- Confirm that the region and Samsung account support the listing.
- Look for an alternative in Samsung Gallery, but do not assume Gallery’s tools are identical to Enhance-X.
Google Photos shows no Magic Eraser, Unblur, or portrait controls
- Confirm that the phone meets the relevant Android and RAM requirement.
- Check whether the tool is Pixel-only, requires a download, or is still rolling out to your account.
- Update Photos and retry on a supported image.
- Remember that iOS has Photos access but not necessarily the same Android tool set.
The edited image looks worse
- Undo or revert instead of stacking several enhancement passes.
- Reduce the strength of the adjustment where the app provides a control, such as Enhance-X HDR levels.
- Inspect edges, text, skin, and repeated patterns at 100% magnification.
- Return to the original or an untouched copy and try one targeted correction rather than a one-tap enhancement.
You ran out of Google storage
Remember that the 15 GB allowance is shared by Photos, Gmail, and Drive. Review large videos and Drive files as well as photos before assuming the editor itself is consuming an unexpected quota.
Which editor should you use?
Choose Galaxy Enhance-X when the phone is compatible and the job matches one of its specialist controls: Fix Moiré, Remove Shadows, Remove Reflection, Fix Lens Distortion, Old Photo, or the focused blur, sharpen, brighten, HDR, and upscale functions. Its strongest case is precision by problem type, not a claim that every edited image will look better.

On a compatible Galaxy, keeping both is sensible: use Enhance-X for the corrections it uniquely exposes and Google Photos for library management or tools available only there. Save a copy before experimenting, and verify eligibility on the exact device rather than relying on an old feature list.
