Samsung Galaxy Edge Panel: What This Built-In Add-On Does and How to Enable It

What is the Edge Panel on a Samsung Galaxy phone, and how do you turn it on? Edge Panel is a swipe-out shortcut interface built into supported Galaxy software. It is not a case, dongle, or accessory you buy separately: a small handle sits on the side of the display, and swiping inward opens shortcuts to apps and other tools.

The original headline says every Galaxy phone includes this feature, but current Samsung support material does not establish that claim for every model or software version. A safer description is that many Galaxy phones have Edge Panel, with availability varying by device and One UI release. If you do not see Edge panels under Settings > Display, your model or software may not support it.

What Edge Panel actually is

Edge Panel is a configurable launcher that appears above whatever is on your screen. Samsung describes it as a shortcut tab for opening favorite apps quickly, while WIRED’s David Nield describes it as a customizable shortcut bar. You reveal it by swiping from a narrow handle at the edge of the display, select a shortcut, and then return to the app you were using.

Because it is software, there is no physical attachment to install and no separate purchase required for the basic feature. The panel can be useful when you need a second app, a contact, a reminder, or a utility without returning to the home screen or opening the full app drawer.

Edge Panel is different from a permanent row of home-screen icons. The handle remains available over other apps, and the panel can hold more than a few shortcuts while staying hidden until you need it. It is also different from the curved-screen hardware that gave some older Galaxy models their “edge” branding; current Edge Panel behavior is a software feature and should not be assumed from the phone’s screen shape alone.

Does every Samsung Galaxy phone include it?

No definitive current compatibility list supports “every Galaxy phone.” A Samsung Singapore support page updated August 10, 2022, describes Edge panels as a shortcut tab found on “any Galaxy device,” but a newer Samsung Gulf guide, updated July 2, 2026, lists specific families for its updated Edge Panel and Smart Select information: Galaxy S24, S25 and S26 series, Z Fold and Z Flip series, and selected A-series models.

Those statements are not necessarily contradictory. The older wording describes the feature broadly, while the newer guide concerns updated functionality and named device families. Neither page is an exhaustive list of every Galaxy generation, regional variant, or software build. Panel choices and related features can also differ between One UI versions.

Use the phone itself as the final check:

  • Open Settings.
  • Tap Display.
  • Look for Edge panels.

If that setting is present, the phone exposes the feature and you can enable it. If it is absent, do not assume a reset or a third-party app will recreate Samsung’s system panel; the model or installed software may simply not offer it.

How to turn on Edge Panel

Samsung’s current support instructions use this path, although labels can vary slightly by model and software version.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Select Display.
  3. Tap Edge panels.
  4. Switch the feature on.
  5. Return to the home screen or another app and swipe inward from the visible edge handle to open the panel.

The handle is normally a small tab at the left or right edge. A short, deliberate swipe starting on the handle works more reliably than dragging from the middle of the screen. If the panel does not appear, reopen the setting and confirm the switch is enabled, then try the opposite edge if the handle has been moved.

If the menu is missing

Search Settings for “Edge panels” rather than relying only on the Display page; Samsung reorganizes menus between One UI releases. If search returns nothing, check the model’s software update status and regional support documentation. The absence of the setting is meaningful evidence that the installed software does not provide Edge Panel, not proof that the feature is hidden behind an unrelated option.

Choose what appears in the panel

After enabling the feature, open the same Settings > Display > Edge panels screen and select Panels. Samsung’s current guide lets you choose which panes are shown and edit the selected pane. The exact collection depends on the phone, region, and software release.

WIRED’s September 7, 2026 description reports seven panel types. Treat these as examples of the available setup rather than a guaranteed menu on every Galaxy device:

Panel What it is useful for Availability note
Apps Open favorite apps from any screen. Reported by WIRED; the exact app layout can vary.
People Reach selected contacts without opening the full Contacts app. Reported by WIRED; not guaranteed on every release.
Tasks Expose task-oriented shortcuts for quick actions. Reported by WIRED; supported actions depend on the device.
Weather Check weather information from the panel. Reported by WIRED; service and display can vary by region.
Tools Provide quick access to utility functions. Reported by WIRED; the tools offered are software-dependent.
Clipboard View clipboard contents from the panel. Reported by WIRED; consider the privacy implications below.
Reminder Surface reminder-related actions or entries. Reported by WIRED; the menu is not universal.

To change the order or contents, open Panels, tap the pane you want, and use the edit controls Samsung provides for that version. Keep only panels you will actually use: fewer panes make the swipe-out interface faster to scan and reduce accidental taps.

Customize the handle so it is easy to reach

Samsung’s current guide includes a Handle menu for the tab itself. Depending on the phone and software version, you can:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Move the handle to the left or right side.
  • Change its color or visual style.
  • Adjust transparency so it is less distracting over content.
  • Change the handle’s size.
  • Adjust its width to make swiping easier or keep it unobtrusive.

A right-handed user may find a right-side handle easier to reach, while a left-handed user may prefer the opposite side. A wider handle can help if a case or screen protector makes edge swipes difficult; reducing transparency can make the tab easier to locate. These are comfort choices, not performance settings, so there is no universally correct arrangement.

When the handle interferes with another gesture

Edge Panel shares the display edge with navigation gestures and controls inside some apps. If swipes trigger the wrong action, move the handle to the other side, reduce its width, or place it higher or lower if your software offers that control. You can also turn Edge Panel off temporarily from Settings > Display > Edge panels when using an app that depends heavily on edge gestures.

Download additional panels

Samsung says more panels can be browsed through Galaxy Store settings. Open Settings > Display > Edge panels, enter the panel-selection screen, and look for the Galaxy Store option or download control presented on your device. The wording and location can change with the software version.

Some optional panels may cost extra. That charge applies to a downloadable software panel, not to Edge Panel itself and not to a physical add-on. Review the price and permissions shown before installing, and remember that an optional panel may not be compatible with every Galaxy model or One UI release.

Privacy and lock-screen considerations

A shortcut panel can reveal more than an app icon. WIRED reports that the Clipboard panel can expose clipboard contents and mentions an option to hide the panel on the lock screen on devices that provide it. Clipboard data may include one-time codes, addresses, copied messages, or other sensitive text, so check your phone’s lock-screen setting before enabling that panel.

Use the same principle for People, Tasks, Reminder, and any downloaded pane: decide whether its information should be reachable when the phone is locked. If your model offers a lock-screen visibility control, disable it for panels that expose personal content. If it does not, remove those panels or keep Edge Panel off when the phone is unattended.

Edge Panel versus ordinary shortcuts

Edge Panel is not automatically better than the app drawer or home-screen shortcuts. The choice depends on how you use the phone:

Access method Setup effort Shortcut types Device requirement
Edge Panel Enable it in Display settings, then select and arrange panels. Apps plus supported contacts, tasks, weather, tools, clipboard, reminders, and downloadable panes. Requires a Galaxy model and software build that expose Edge panels.
Home-screen shortcuts Place app icons or widgets on a home screen. Usually apps and widgets supplied by the launcher. Available on most phones, but layout and widgets vary.
App drawer No special setup. Installed apps, generally in a full-screen list or grid. Depends on the phone’s launcher.

Use the home screen for items you want visible and Edge Panel for shortcuts you want available across apps without dedicating permanent screen space. If you rarely switch tasks, the extra handle may add clutter rather than save time.

Troubleshooting common problems

The swipe does nothing

  • Confirm Settings > Display > Edge panels is switched on.
  • Swipe from the handle itself, not several centimeters away from the edge.
  • Check whether the handle was moved to the other side or made nearly transparent.
  • Temporarily move or enlarge the handle in Handle settings and try again.

A panel or app is missing

Open Panels and check whether the pane is selected. Some panels are optional downloads, and some are not offered for a particular model, region, or software release. Update the phone only through its normal system-update screen, then recheck the available panel list; do not assume an update will add every panel reported for another Galaxy family.

The panel opens accidentally

Move the handle away from the area where you perform frequent back or navigation gestures, reduce its width, or lower its transparency. If accidental openings continue, disable Edge Panel and use home-screen shortcuts instead.

The panel shows personal information on the lock screen

Review lock-screen visibility for the affected panel, particularly Clipboard. If no control is available, remove that pane or disable Edge Panel before locking the phone.

What the headline gets right—and wrong

The useful “add-on” in the headline is a built-in software convenience: a swipe-accessible shortcut system that can be configured around your routine. It does not require buying an accessory, and supported phones can use it immediately after enabling the setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The word “every” is the part to treat cautiously. Samsung’s documentation covers different device groups and software generations, and its 2026 guide names only selected Galaxy families for updated Edge Panel and Smart Select functionality associated with One UI 6.1.1. Check your exact phone rather than inferring support from the Galaxy name alone.

Bottom line

On a supported Samsung Galaxy phone, Edge Panel is a practical, configurable shortcut bar: enable it under Settings > Display > Edge panels, swipe inward from the handle, choose the panels you need, and adjust the handle’s position and appearance. Because availability and panel lists vary by model and software version, the setting on your own phone—not the “every Galaxy” wording—is the authoritative compatibility test.
