A recently updated app or background activity may be using unusually much power, but timing alone does not prove the phone’s software update caused the drain. Samsung’s menus vary by model and software version.
1. Find out when and where the charge is going
Note when the sudden drop began and whether it happens while the phone is idle, while you use a particular app, or in a place with weak or unstable reception. Samsung lists apps with excessive consumption and unstable network signal among possible contributors to faster battery drain. A pattern can help narrow the next check, but it is not proof of a single cause.

On the phone, open Settings > Battery and review the graph and detailed app usage. If your model uses a different route or label, follow the closest matching Battery or Device care screen. Samsung notes that paths and names can vary between devices and software versions.

- Check whether an app continues consuming power in the background when you are not actively using it.
- If one app stands out, install any available update from its official app store, review its background activity, or uninstall it if you no longer need it.
Samsung’s battery-drain troubleshooting guidance recommends reviewing detailed app usage and removing apps that drain excessively.

2. Check apps and background activity
Recently installed or updated apps
Review apps you installed or updated around the time the drain began. Compare their battery use with your normal activity rather than assuming that the phone’s system update is responsible. If a particular app is clearly consuming power, update it if a newer version is available; otherwise, consider limiting its background activity or removing it.
Put rarely used apps to sleep
Samsung lets users place some apps in Sleeping or Deep sleeping lists. Deep-sleeping apps do not run in the background and work only when you open them manually. That can reduce background use, but it may also delay syncing or notifications. Avoid deep-sleeping apps for which you need timely alerts or background updates.
3. Try low-risk built-in power controls
Optimize the phone
On models with this menu, open Device care > Optimize now. This is a housekeeping step, not a diagnosis: it may help manage device activity, but it does not establish what caused the battery drop.

Test Power saving mode
Turn on Power saving mode temporarily and see whether the rate of battery loss changes under comparable use. Samsung says the mode can restrict background data for unused apps and disable high-power features such as Always On Display. Those limits can affect background syncing and notifications, so treat this as a temporary test if you rely on those functions.
Restart after the update
If you have not restarted the phone since installing the update, restart it and then check the Battery screen again. This is a practical troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix for update-related drain.

Open Samsung Members > Support > Phone diagnostics and run the battery check, if that option is available on your device. Samsung describes Phone Diagnostics as a self-diagnosis tool; its availability and menu labels may vary.

Battery capacity naturally declines with repeated use. Samsung says recurring unexpected shutdowns or a noticeable loss of runtime can be reasons to have the battery evaluated. If diagnostics indicate a problem, or the phone continues to lose charge rapidly despite app checks, contact Samsung support or a local service provider to discuss an inspection. Warranty coverage and service options depend on the device and local terms.

What a post-update drain does—and does not—tell you
Samsung says battery use may rise temporarily during initial setup while apps and services are being optimized, and may normalize after that optimization. Its guidance describes the initial-setup context; it does not establish a universal settling period for every software update or show that an update caused a particular phone’s drain. The available guidance also does not establish one firmware bug affecting all Galaxy models or a guaranteed fix.
If the checks above do not identify the cause, the exact Galaxy model, One UI version, update build, region, and battery age can help narrow further troubleshooting. For model-specific routes, consult Samsung support for your country and device.
