Neither Galaxy AI nor Apple Intelligence can be declared categorically more private from the companies’ published descriptions alone. Both combine on-device processing with cloud capacity for some tasks. Samsung exposes a “Process data only on device” control for Galaxy AI, while Apple says requests are evaluated for on-device processing or its Private Cloud Compute (PCC) service. The practical choice depends on the exact phone, feature, language, country and privacy control you need.
What the comparison actually tells you
Galaxy AI and Apple Intelligence are feature suites rather than single, uniform models. A translation, a note summary, an image edit and a voice-assistant request can use different processing paths. Device eligibility also does not guarantee identical feature coverage: software version, language, region and the particular app or function can change what is available.

Samsung’s US documentation says many translation functions and Gallery Edit Suggestions run on the device, while auto-formatting, auto-summarizing, auto-correction and image-editing functions are listed as cloud-based examples. Samsung also provides a setting intended to disable online processing. Apple says Apple Intelligence handles requests on-device when possible and uses PCC when a request needs more capacity. Those are vendor-stated designs, not an independent head-to-head privacy test.

How Galaxy AI works and what it can do
Core apps and functions
Samsung describes Galaxy AI across apps including Samsung Notes, Samsung Internet and Camera. Examples in its US support material include organizing and summarizing notes, writing assistance, and circling content or images to find related information. These functions are presented as a collection of tools, not as one switch that makes every app intelligent.

- HELP THAT KEEPS UP: Stay in the moment while Now Nudge with Galaxy AI helps you respond faster and stay organized with smart suggestions⁵ that appear exactly when you need them on your phone
- Notes: Galaxy AI can help organize and summarize notes. Samsung’s privacy notice identifies images, text and recordings associated with Note assist as examples of inputs that may be processed outside the device.
- Writing assistance: Entered or selected text used by Writing assist is listed by Samsung as an example of information that can be processed outside the phone.
- Translation: Samsung identifies many translation functions as on-device examples. Availability still depends on the model, software and language.
- Web and visual search: Circling content or an image can initiate a search for related information. Samsung Internet also includes AI functions, with webpage content and history named in Samsung’s US privacy notice as possible inputs for Browsing assist.
- Camera and Gallery: Image tools include editing functions and Gallery Edit Suggestions. Samsung lists Gallery Edit Suggestions as an on-device example, while its support article lists image editing among cloud-based examples; the exact function and release therefore matter.
- Transcript assistance: Call and voice transcripts are examples of inputs Samsung says may be processed outside the device.
Galaxy AI processing controls
On supported Samsung devices, open the Galaxy AI settings and look for “Process data only on device.” Enabling it is intended to disable cloud processing for Galaxy AI features. The wording, location and available choices can vary by model and software release, and Samsung warns that some features may become unavailable or behave differently when online processing is disabled.
This control is useful if keeping eligible requests local is more important than having every AI function available. It is not evidence that all Galaxy AI features are inherently on-device: Samsung separately documents a hybrid design and names categories of information that can leave the phone when cloud-backed functions are used.
What Samsung says may leave the device
Samsung’s US Account Privacy Notice gives concrete examples rather than describing cloud processing only in general terms. Depending on the feature, information can include:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- entered or selected text for Writing assist;
- images, text and recordings for Note assist;
- call and voice transcripts for Transcript assist; and
- webpage content and browsing history for Browsing assist.
These examples describe possible processing categories, not a claim that every request always uses the cloud. A feature can change its path with a software update, and Samsung says country and device availability differ.

How Apple Intelligence works and what it can do
On-device processing and Private Cloud Compute
Apple’s published explanation is that Apple Intelligence analyzes each request to determine whether it can be processed on the device or requires Private Cloud Compute. Apple describes PCC as a privacy-preserving route for requests that need greater capacity. According to Apple, PCC data is used only to fulfill the request, is not stored or accessible to Apple, and its server software can be inspected by independent experts.
Apple also says personal data and interactions are not used to train its foundation models unless the user explicitly opts in. These are Apple’s privacy commitments and architectural descriptions; the available material does not independently verify them or compare them with Samsung’s implementation.
Apple Intelligence features
Apple’s support documentation covers a broad set of functions across Apple apps and operating systems:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Writing Tools: rewriting, proofreading and other writing assistance in supported contexts.
- Mail and Messages: summaries and other assistance for incoming and outgoing communications.
- Translation: translation in Messages, Phone and FaceTime, plus some AirPods-related use cases where supported.
- Images: Image Playground, Genmoji, Image Wand and photo tools.
- Siri: expanded conversational and system-assistance capabilities, with availability varying by platform and release.
- Shortcuts: integration that lets supported intelligence functions participate in automations.
- Accessibility: selected assistance features documented by Apple for supported devices and operating systems.
Apple’s list is a capability snapshot, not a promise that every item works on every eligible iPhone, iPad, Mac or Vision Pro. Some server-backed functions can have usage limits, and Apple separately lists language, region and platform exclusions.

What can be compared fairly
A fair comparison asks four narrower questions:
- What exact feature will you use? A translation request may have a different path from a transcript or image edit.
- What data does that feature need? Text, images, recordings, transcripts, webpage content and history carry different sensitivity risks.
- Can you control the path? Samsung exposes a device-only setting. Apple describes automatic routing between on-device processing and PCC rather than a universal local-only switch.
- What does the vendor promise? Samsung documents hybrid processing and input categories; Apple documents PCC handling, limited use and inspection of server software.
On those documented points, Samsung offers a more explicit user-facing switch for restricting Galaxy AI to the device. Apple offers a detailed explanation of PCC and says requests sent there are not stored or accessible to Apple. Neither fact proves a universal privacy advantage because the systems, features and disclosures are not measured on identical workloads.
Questions to ask before enabling a feature
- Does the feature need a transcript, recording, image, browsing history or personal message?
- Will disabling online processing remove the function I actually want?
- Is the feature available in my language and country?
- Is the setting applied to all Galaxy AI functions or only those that support the device-only path?
- Does Apple list a daily or other usage limit for this server-backed capability?
Samsung Galaxy AI device support
Samsung’s current US support guidance lists the Galaxy S26, S25 and S24 series, selected A-series models, newer foldables and selected tablets as ready for Galaxy AI. It also lists older models that require a software update. The support page emphasizes that the model and installed software determine feature availability.
| Samsung category | What the US guidance says | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S series | Galaxy S26, S25 and S24 series are listed as ready for Galaxy AI. | Exact model, software release, feature and local-market availability. |
| A series | Selected A-series models are listed. | The specific A-series model; the family name alone is insufficient. |
| Foldables | Newer foldable models are included in the supported categories. | The exact generation and regional software support. |
| Tablets | Selected tablets are included. | Model, update status and the feature you intend to use. |
| Older Galaxy devices | Some older models require a software update. | Whether the update is offered in your country and whether it enables the desired function. |
This is Samsung US guidance, not a worldwide guarantee. A device sold in another market can have different software, languages or feature restrictions. Check Samsung support for your country and then verify the individual feature rather than relying only on a “Galaxy AI” label.
Apple Intelligence device support
Apple’s support documentation lists supported iPhone 15 Pro models and newer eligible iPhones. It also lists iPad mini with A17 Pro, iPads with M1 or later, Apple-silicon Macs and Apple Vision Pro. Some Apple Watch capabilities require a compatible nearby iPhone.

Writing and summarizing
Both platforms address writing and summaries. Galaxy AI emphasizes Samsung Notes organization, summarization and Writing assist; Apple lists Writing Tools plus Mail and Message summaries. If your work is centered on Samsung Notes and Samsung Internet, Galaxy AI’s app integration may be the deciding factor. If you write across Apple apps and use Shortcuts, Apple’s system integration may fit better. Neither vendor material supplies a neutral quality or accuracy score.
Translation
Samsung identifies many translation functions as on-device examples. Apple lists translation in Messages, Phone and FaceTime, with some AirPods support. Compare the languages and exact conversation context you need: a feature’s presence in a product family does not establish availability in your country or language.

Voice, transcripts and assistants
Samsung’s privacy notice specifically names call and voice transcripts as possible inputs for Transcript assist. Apple’s feature list includes expanded Siri functions and Phone and FaceTime translation. For either platform, determine whether recordings or transcripts are involved before using the feature with confidential conversations.
Web and app actions
Samsung’s circle-to-search style function and Samsung Internet tools connect AI with visual and webpage content; Samsung names webpage content and history among possible external-processing inputs for Browsing assist. Apple’s Shortcuts integration is the more relevant comparison for users who want intelligence features to trigger automations across apps.
How to check your phone before you switch
- Record the exact model number. “Galaxy S” or “iPhone 15” is not precise enough; identify the Pro, Plus, Ultra, foldable, A-series or regional variant where applicable.
- Install the latest offered software update. Samsung lists older devices that need an update, and Apple ties eligibility to operating-system requirements.
- Check the vendor’s support list for your market. Samsung’s cited list is US-specific. Apple’s page includes region and language restrictions, including China mainland limitations.
- Choose the feature first. Confirm translation, notes, image, transcript, Siri, Shortcuts or another function separately instead of assuming suite-wide parity.
- Confirm language and account settings. Apple requires device and Siri language matching for relevant functions; both platforms can vary by language.
- Review privacy controls. On Samsung, look for “Process data only on device.” On Apple, read the feature’s stated on-device/PCC behavior and any usage limit.
- Test with non-sensitive material. Before using private recordings, medical information or confidential work documents, verify that the function works as expected and understand its processing path.
Do you need a new phone?
Not necessarily. A supported existing device may already provide the functions you want after a software update, while an unsupported model cannot gain every capability simply by installing an app. Buying a new phone is justified only after checking the exact feature, language, market and processing requirement.
Recommended Free Tools
Samsung identifies Galaxy S26 as ready for Galaxy AI in its US support list, and Apple identifies eligible iPhone 15 Pro models and newer iPhones for Apple Intelligence. Those statements establish compatibility categories, not that either phone is the best overall purchase or that an upgrade is required. Re-check live model listings before placing an order because eligibility and regional software can change.
Limitations and common mistakes
- Assuming a family name guarantees support: selected A-series devices, foldables and tablets are not interchangeable.
- Confusing suite support with feature parity: one model can support Galaxy AI or Apple Intelligence while lacking a particular language or function.
- Calling all processing local: Samsung documents cloud-backed examples, and Apple says PCC handles requests that need more capacity.
- Assuming a local-only setting preserves every feature: Samsung’s device-only option can limit functions that require online processing.
- Ignoring region: Samsung’s cited model list is for the United States; Apple documents country and language restrictions.
- Treating vendor promises as independent proof: the published material contains no neutral benchmark, privacy score, accuracy percentage or head-to-head test.
- Using sensitive data without checking inputs: Samsung names text, images, recordings, transcripts, webpage content and history as possible categories for external processing, depending on the tool.
Bottom line for different buyers
- Choose Galaxy AI’s approach if you use Samsung’s Notes, Internet and Camera ecosystem and want an explicit device-only processing control, accepting that some functions may be unavailable when cloud processing is disabled.
- Choose Apple Intelligence’s approach if you are already in the Apple ecosystem and value Apple’s documented on-device/PCC routing, app integration, Shortcuts and Apple-platform features.
- Prioritize privacy review over brand claims if your main concern is confidential text, recordings, transcripts or browsing activity. Identify the exact feature and read its current processing description before enabling it.
- Do not upgrade solely for the label until the support page confirms your model, software, language and country meet the requirement.
The evidence available as of October 13, 2026 supports a nuanced conclusion: Galaxy AI gives users a clearly stated local-processing switch, while Apple describes a tightly controlled cloud path through Private Cloud Compute. That difference is meaningful, but it is not an independent finding that one entire platform is more private.
