It is designed to filter browser content and can be installed and toggled from Samsung Browser. A filtering Private DNS service is the better starting point when you want hostname-level filtering that may apply to several apps, but its results depend on the resolver you choose and whether each app uses the Android system resolver. Neither method is a universal ad blocker, and the available documentation does not establish a winner for block rate, speed, battery life or app coverage.
This guide explains what each layer can see, how to configure both on a Galaxy phone or tablet, when combining them makes sense and what to do when ads or connectivity problems remain.

The short answer
| Your main goal | Best starting point | Why | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reduce ads on pages opened in Samsung Browser | Samsung Browser Ad blockers | Samsung provides an in-browser area for installing and switching blockers on or off. | It operates in Samsung Browser; the available blocker apps and menus can vary by device, software version and region. Samsung’s setup instructions apply to its documented US interface. |
| Stop pop-up windows in Samsung Internet | Block pop-ups, with an Ad blocker if needed | Samsung documents pop-up prevention as a separate browser setting. | Blocking pop-up windows is not the same as filtering every advert or tracker. Samsung’s pop-up guide shows the separate control. |
| Filter advertising domains across more than one app | Private DNS configured with a filtering provider | Private DNS is an Android system DNS-over-TLS setting, so filtering can affect apps that use the configured resolver. | It only works on hostnames the resolver can filter, and app traffic may not always use that resolver. It cannot inspect page layout or remove an advert served from the same hostname as desired content. Android’s security documentation and the Android DNS Resolver documentation describe the underlying layer. |
| See what Samsung Browser itself reports as blocked | Samsung Browser privacy dashboard | Samsung says the dashboard can show counts of blocked content, including ads and trackers. | The display is browser-level activity, not a controlled comparison with DNS filtering. See Samsung’s privacy-dashboard instructions. |
In practical terms, choose by where the ads appear. Browser-only annoyance points to the browser control; broader domain filtering points to Private DNS. You can use both, but they remain separate layers rather than two versions of the same feature.
How the two approaches work
Samsung Browser Ad blockers operate inside the browser
Samsung describes Ad blockers as apps in Samsung Browser that prevent ads from appearing while you browse. The blocker works with the browser’s page-loading and rendering process, where it can apply the rules supplied by the installed blocker. Because this is a browser feature, it is aimed directly at pages opened in Samsung Internet rather than at every connection made by the phone.

The browser also exposes controls for privacy and pop-ups. Those controls should not be treated as interchangeable: a pop-up window can be stopped without filtering every in-page advert, while an ad blocker may remove page elements that are not pop-up windows.
Private DNS works during hostname resolution
DNS translates a hostname such as a website’s domain into an address that an app can connect to. Android’s resolver sends DNS queries, receives answers and caches results. Android 9 and later support DNS over TLS through the Private DNS setting; Android 10 also supports administrator configuration and the ability for an administrator to prevent users from changing DNS settings. The setting itself is a transport and resolver choice, not an ad-blocking catalog.
To filter advertisements, the selected DNS service must decide that a requested hostname should not resolve normally. If the service returns a blocked response, an app may fail to load that host. If the advert and the wanted content come from the same hostname, DNS has no page-level way to remove only the advert. DNS also cannot see an advert that is delivered without a separate hostname it can block.
Why neither method wins in every situation
The browser can make decisions about page requests and displayed elements, but only in that browser. DNS can influence hostname lookups for multiple apps, but it has no view of the page after a hostname resolves. The two layers therefore measure different things. The available Samsung and Android documentation does not provide a controlled test of block percentages, loading speed, battery use, data savings or app coverage, so a universal ranking would be unsupported.

- Open Samsung Browser on your Galaxy phone or tablet.
- Tap Tools, represented by the three vertical dots.
- Select Ad blockers.
- Choose an option from the list and install it. Samsung says some listed blockers are free and others cost money.
- Return to the Ad blockers list and use the switch beside the installed option to enable or disable it.
Samsung’s support page does not establish a permanent list of products, prices or compatibility for every Galaxy model. Check the listing shown on your device before installing, and review the blocker’s own permissions and privacy information. If a blocker causes a page to malfunction, turn it off from the same list and reload the page; this isolates the browser rule set without changing Android’s DNS configuration.
Turn on the separate pop-up control
For pop-up windows, follow Samsung’s documented route:
- Open Samsung Internet and go to Settings.
- Open Privacy dashboard.
- Turn on Block pop-ups.
- Return to the browser menu and open Ad blockers if you also need page-level ad filtering.
The pop-up switch is useful when a site opens a new window or overlay, but it does not promise to remove every banner, sponsored element or tracker. Treat it as a focused browser control.
Check the browser’s privacy dashboard
Samsung says its browsing privacy dashboard can display counts of blocked content, such as ads and trackers. Use those numbers to understand what Samsung Browser reports for that browser on that device. They are not a published block-rate benchmark and cannot be compared directly with a DNS provider’s internal statistics.
Set up Private DNS on a Galaxy device
Android’s Private DNS setting is documented at the platform level, so a Samsung One UI menu may not exactly match the Android documentation. The most reliable way to find it is Settings search.
- Open Settings.
- Use the search field and enter Private DNS. If search is unavailable, look under the network or connection settings for that label.
- Open Private DNS and select the mode that lets you enter a Private DNS provider hostname. Android versions may show additional choices such as an automatic mode.
- Enter the hostname supplied by the filtering DNS service you have chosen. Do not enter a web URL with
https://unless that service explicitly instructs you to; the field is for a hostname. - Save the setting, then open a few sites and apps that you use regularly.
Android 9 introduced DNS over TLS support and the Private DNS provider-hostname mode. On managed devices, Android 10 and later can allow an administrator to configure the resolver or prevent users from changing it. If your work or school profile controls the setting, follow that administrator’s policy rather than trying to override it.

Choose a resolver carefully
Private DNS has no built-in promise to block advertisements. The filtering scope comes from the resolver you enter. Before using one, check its current documentation for the domains it filters, how it handles blocked lookups, outage behavior, logging and privacy terms. Availability, policies and compatibility can change, and no particular provider is established here as universally best.
A filtering resolver may affect several apps, but only when their connections use the configured Android resolver. An app that uses its own DNS mechanism, a separately configured network, or an encrypted connection that bypasses system resolution may not follow the device setting. Private DNS also does not become a VPN, does not encrypt all application traffic and does not guarantee that adverts disappear from every app.
What Private DNS can and cannot block in apps
When it can help
If an app requests an advertising or tracking hostname through Android’s resolver, a filtering response can prevent that hostname from resolving. The result may be fewer requests, blank ad areas or an app that simply omits an advert. The same mechanism can operate when Samsung Browser performs a lookup, so DNS filtering may provide an additional layer for browser traffic.
Why app coverage is uneven
- Resolver choice: The configured service must include the requested hostname in its filtering rules.
- Resolver use: The app must actually send the lookup through the Android resolver governed by Private DNS.
- Shared hostnames: If advertising and wanted content share one hostname, DNS cannot separate them.
- Already-resolved or embedded content: DNS filtering cannot edit content after it has arrived and cannot remove an advert from a page layout.
Consequently, “Does Private DNS block ads in apps?” has a conditional answer: it can block some app requests, but it is not a guarantee of ad-free apps or full-device content filtering.

Can Private DNS block ads in Samsung Internet?
Yes, it can affect Samsung Internet when the browser resolves an advertising hostname through the configured resolver and that resolver blocks it. However, Samsung Browser’s Ad blockers feature is the more direct tool for browser ads because it is designed for the browser’s own requests and page content. DNS filtering cannot replace the browser’s ability to apply page-level rules, and the browser blocker cannot automatically cover unrelated apps.

For a browser-first setup, enable the browser’s blocker and pop-up control, then use the privacy dashboard to observe browser-level blocked-content counts. Add Private DNS only when you have a separate reason to filter hostnames beyond Samsung Internet.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Using both layers together
There is no requirement to choose one exclusively. A Galaxy user can enable a Samsung Browser blocker and configure Private DNS independently. The browser layer can handle page-specific rules while DNS handles eligible hostname lookups from the system and participating apps.
Layering can also make diagnosis harder. When a page fails, you need to determine whether the browser blocker or the DNS resolver caused it. Change one setting at a time:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Temporarily disable the browser’s Ad blockers switch and reload the page.
- If the problem remains, return to Settings → Private DNS and switch to the previous mode or disable the custom provider temporarily.
- Reload again. Restore the layer that was not responsible, then adjust or replace the rule set in the layer that was.
Do not assume that two filters produce twice the protection. They inspect different stages, and the documentation does not establish a combined block-rate or performance benefit.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Ads still appear in Samsung Browser
- Confirm that an option is installed under Tools → Ad blockers and that its adjacent switch is on.
- Reload the page after changing the switch; a page already loaded may retain its existing elements.
- Turn on Settings → Privacy dashboard → Block pop-ups if the problem is a new window rather than an in-page advert.
- Remember that DNS cannot remove an advert merely because it is visible; it must be able to block the advert’s hostname.
An app shows ads even though Private DNS is enabled
- Check that the Private DNS mode still shows the intended provider hostname.
- Consider whether the app uses the Android system resolver. Apps and networks that use another resolution path may not be affected.
- The provider may not filter the hostname, or the advert may share a hostname with the app’s desired content.
- Do not treat continued adverts as proof that Private DNS is broken; it may be operating normally within those limits.
A website or app stops loading after a DNS change
- Return to Settings, search for Private DNS and temporarily choose the automatic or previous mode.
- Retry the site or app.
- If it works again, the filtering resolver or a blocked dependency is the likely cause. Review that service’s allow-list or troubleshooting guidance rather than changing unrelated browser settings.
If the issue disappears only when the browser blocker is disabled, re-enable Private DNS and adjust the browser blocker instead. This one-change-at-a-time approach avoids misdiagnosing the layer at fault.
Best Value
The Private DNS menu is missing or named differently
Samsung notes that menu names and screen layouts vary by Galaxy model and software version. Search Settings for “Private DNS” first. If the device is managed by an organization, an administrator may have configured or locked the setting. Android platform documentation describes the feature, but it is not a promise of an identical One UI path on every model.
Privacy, security and practical trade-offs
What Private DNS protects
Private DNS on supported Android versions uses DNS over TLS for the resolver connection. That protects the DNS exchange in transit to the configured resolver, but it does not turn ordinary app traffic into a VPN tunnel or conceal every connection from networks and services. The resolver remains a service you are choosing, so its privacy terms and operational record matter.

What a browser blocker controls
A Samsung Browser blocker is narrower by design: it applies in Samsung Internet and can be switched off for troubleshooting. Its narrow scope is an advantage when you want predictable browser behavior without changing how other apps resolve domains. It is not a system-wide policy.
Evidence you can and cannot infer
The privacy dashboard can show Samsung Browser’s own blocked-content counts. Those counts describe what the browser reports on your device; they are not a laboratory comparison with DNS. No cited source supplies a verified percentage of ads blocked, a speed improvement, battery savings or a cross-app coverage score for either approach.
Decision guide
- Only Samsung Browser bothers you: Install and enable an Ad blocker from Tools → Ad blockers. Add Block pop-ups if pop-up windows are the specific nuisance.
- You want hostname filtering in several apps: Investigate a filtering Private DNS service, enter its provider hostname in Android’s Private DNS setting and test the apps you care about.
- You need both scopes: Use both layers, but keep their settings and troubleshooting separate.
- You need a guarantee that every advert disappears: Neither documented method can provide that guarantee. DNS cannot make page-level distinctions, and the browser blocker does not govern every app.
Bottom line
Samsung Galaxy ad blocking versus Private DNS is a layer comparison, not a single winner. Samsung Browser’s Ad blockers control is the most appropriate first move for ads and pop-ups encountered in Samsung Internet. A filtering Private DNS provider is worth considering for domain-level filtering that may extend to other apps, provided those apps use the system resolver and the provider filters the relevant hostnames. The two can coexist, but neither should be presented as a VPN, a universal app filter or a substitute for checking the settings and policies of the service you select.
