Short answer: the Samsung Galaxy A57 5G is the safer camera choice if you prioritise low-light stills, based on Notebookcheck’s direct comparison. That is a review finding, not a universal lab result. The REDMI Note 17 Pro 5G also has optical image stabilisation (OIS) on its main camera, and Xiaomi’s Malaysia specification lists an 8 MP ultra-wide. Compare samples from your local variants before deciding.
At a glance: which camera system fits your priorities?
The two phones have similar headline hardware on their main cameras: both are reported with a 50 MP, f/1.8 primary camera and OIS. The meaningful differences are the supporting cameras, sensor information, regional firmware and how each phone processes difficult scenes.

| Priority | More promising option from the available evidence | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Low-light photographs | Samsung Galaxy A57 5G | Notebookcheck’s side-by-side review found the A57 produced more balanced low-light images and judged the Redmi disappointing in those conditions. |
| Ultra-wide resolution | Samsung Galaxy A57 5G on reported specifications | The A57 is reported with a 12 MP ultra-wide; Xiaomi Malaysia lists an 8 MP ultra-wide for the Redmi. |
| OIS on the main camera | Both | Both cited specification sources report optical stabilisation on the primary 50 MP camera. |
| Dedicated close-up camera | Samsung Galaxy A57 5G on the comparison specification | The A57 is reported with a 5 MP macro camera. The comparison article does not list a macro camera for the Redmi. |
| Front-camera pixel count | REDMI Note 17 Pro 5G on the Malaysia specification | Xiaomi lists a 16 MP front camera; the A57 comparison specification reports 12 MP. Pixel count alone does not establish better faces or video. |
| Known rear-video specification | REDMI Note 17 Pro 5G Malaysia variant | Xiaomi’s Malaysia page lists 1080p at 30 fps and 720p at 30 fps. The A57 comparison sources disagree on video details, so verify Samsung’s local specification. |
This table is a starting point, not a final ranking. The A57 advantage comes from one direct review, while several hardware figures come from regional or secondary sources. Model names can cover different firmware and camera configurations, so use the exact country and model identifier when checking a listing.

For the Redmi, the primary source is Xiaomi Malaysia’s REDMI Note 17 Pro 5G specifications. It also lists HDR, portrait, panorama, documents and an underwater mode marked as available by OTA. An OTA label means the mode may depend on a software update rather than being available on every phone at launch.
The A57 figures and the Redmi sensor sizes in the table come from El Grupo Informático’s comparison, published July 20, 2026 and updated October 7, 2026. Check Samsung’s local product page before relying on the A57’s sensor size, macro camera or video modes.
Why the main sensor matters more than the 50 MP label
Megapixels describe the number of recorded pixels, not the amount of light captured or the quality of processing. The reported A57 sensor is larger than the sensor reported for the Redmi in the secondary comparison. A larger sensor can collect more light at the same exposure, which may help noise, shadow detail and subject separation, but the result still depends on lens quality, software, focus and the scene.

OIS moves the camera module to reduce blur caused by hand movement during longer exposures. It cannot freeze a walking person, a child or a moving vehicle; that requires a sufficiently fast shutter speed. OIS can also make handheld video steadier, but the available specifications do not establish that both phones offer identical electronic stabilisation, frame rates or stabilisation in every mode.
Do not infer that the Redmi lacks stabilisation. Xiaomi’s Malaysia page explicitly lists OIS on its 50 MP main camera. Any comparison that awards the A57 a win simply because it has OIS is therefore inaccurate.

What independent reviews found in real photographs
Notebookcheck’s direct comparison
Notebookcheck’s comparison published October 11, 2026 says its test photos showed the Redmi Note 17 Pro camera disappointing, particularly in low light. It found the Galaxy A57’s larger main sensor produced more balanced images. This is an outlet-specific assessment based on its samples and test conditions, not a controlled industry benchmark or a guarantee for every regional model.
TechRadar’s separate A57 review
TechRadar’s April 2026 Galaxy A57 review included its own sample photographs after a little more than two weeks of use. That review reported difficulty with colour and dynamic range in some scenes. It was not a side-by-side Redmi test, but it is an important qualification: the A57 can be the stronger of these two cameras in a comparison without being consistently excellent in every situation.

Compare these scenes before you buy
A useful comparison uses identical framing, the same subject and the same lighting. Capture both phones at their default settings first, then repeat with night mode and any high-resolution option that each phone offers. Keep lenses clean and disable beauty filters so processing differences are visible.
Daylight and high-contrast scenes
- Photograph a building with bright sky and deep shade. Check whether windows and clouds retain detail or become white patches.
- Inspect fine textures such as brick, leaves and hair at 100 percent. Look for sharpening halos and smeared detail rather than judging only the full-screen image.
- Compare colour consistency between the main and ultra-wide cameras. A large shift in white balance can be more distracting than a small resolution difference.
Indoor and evening scenes
- Use a dim room with a lamp and a person. Check skin tones, facial detail and whether shadows turn grey or noisy.
- Take a still handheld and another with the phone braced. If the braced image is much cleaner, hand movement rather than sensor quality may be the limiting factor.
- Watch for ghosting around moving people in night mode. Multi-frame processing can brighten a scene while leaving moving subjects blurred.
Moving subjects
- Photograph a walking person, a pet or a passing cyclist in daylight and indoor light.
- Check focus reliability and shutter speed. OIS reduces camera shake but does not stop subject movement.
- Repeat the test with the ultra-wide camera, which often uses a smaller sensor and may require a slower shutter in low light.
Faces, skin tones and highlights
- Use a backlit portrait to test exposure on the face and detail in the bright background.
- Compare hair, eyelashes and textured clothing for noise reduction and oversharpening.
- Turn off portrait blur for the baseline shot, then inspect edge cut-outs around hair and glasses if you use portrait mode.
Ultra-wide cameras: 12 MP versus 8 MP is only the beginning
The reported A57 ultra-wide is 12 MP with an f/2.2 aperture and a 1/3-inch sensor; Xiaomi’s Malaysia page lists an 8 MP, f/2.2 ultra-wide for the Redmi, while the secondary comparison reports a 1/4-inch sensor. The A57 therefore has a paper advantage in resolution and the reported sensor size, but those numbers do not prove better photographs.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.

Compare the edges of the frame for smeared detail and chromatic aberration. Check straight lines near the corners for distortion, and photograph the same scene at dusk to see whether the ultra-wide remains usable or becomes noisy. Also check colour matching: a camera that changes from warm main-camera images to cool ultra-wide images can make a panorama of a room look uneven.
If you rarely shoot architecture, landscapes or group photographs in tight spaces, the ultra-wide difference may matter less than main-camera quality. If it is a frequent lens for you, give it a separate test rather than extrapolating from the main sensor.
Macro and close-up photography
The secondary comparison reports a dedicated 5 MP, f/2.4 macro camera on the A57 and no macro camera on the Redmi. A macro module can focus closer than the main camera, but low resolution, weak lighting and fixed focus can make it less useful than a well-tuned main camera cropped moderately.
Test a small object such as a coin, plant detail or electronic component at the distance each phone recommends. Check focus confirmation, minimum focusing distance, texture and colour. If you need close-ups for documentation, compare the document mode as well as macro mode; Xiaomi lists documents among the Redmi’s camera modes.
Selfies and video calls
Xiaomi’s Malaysia specification lists a 16 MP, f/2.4 front camera for the Redmi, while the secondary A57 comparison reports a 12 MP, f/2.2 front camera. The Redmi’s higher pixel count does not automatically mean sharper or more natural selfies. Lens quality, focus design, face processing and exposure are just as important.

Take an indoor selfie near a window, a backlit selfie and a short video call recording. Look for skin smoothing, hair detail, clipped highlights and changes in exposure when you move. Test the microphone and stabilisation separately if video calls are important; the cited camera specifications do not establish identical front-video resolutions or frame rates.
Video and stabilisation: verify the exact mode you will use
Both phones’ cited sources report OIS on the main rear camera, but the available A57 sources differ on video details. Xiaomi’s Malaysia page lists 1080p at 30 fps and 720p at 30 fps for the Redmi. Those are the published Malaysia figures, not a guarantee for every country or firmware version.
Before buying, open the local model’s camera specification and the camera app itself, then confirm:
- Maximum resolution and frame rate on the main and ultra-wide cameras.
- Whether OIS, electronic stabilisation or both work at that resolution.
- Whether stabilisation is available on the ultra-wide and front cameras.
- Autofocus behaviour while recording and whether the phone can switch lenses during a clip.
- Low-light video noise, audio quality and exposure changes when panning.
Record the same 20-second walking clip on each phone. Walk at a normal pace, pan from a dark room toward a window and include a moving person. Watch the clips on a larger screen; a small phone display can hide judder, focus hunting and crushed shadows.
Regional variants, firmware and listing checks
The official Redmi specification cited here is specifically for Malaysia. Camera modes, video limits, storage configurations and firmware can differ elsewhere. The A57 specifications in the comparison are secondary figures rather than a universal Samsung specification sheet.

Before comparing prices or samples, record the following from each listing:
- Country and carrier or unlocked status.
- Exact model number and 5G variant.
- Storage and memory configuration.
- Camera modes and video limits shown on the local manufacturer page.
- Firmware version and whether a camera mode is marked as an OTA update.
- Whether the sample photos were captured after updates and with the same camera app settings.
A phone imported from another market may have different software, warranty coverage or network support even when its retail name is identical. Do not use a Malaysia-only specification to describe every Redmi sold worldwide.
A repeatable buying test
If you can handle both phones in a store or borrow them from someone, use this sequence. It takes about 15 minutes and produces more useful evidence than comparing megapixel counts.
- Clean both lens covers and reset the camera apps to their default photo settings.
- Photograph the same daylight scene with the main camera, using the same framing and tap-to-focus point.
- Repeat indoors, at dusk and in a dim room. Capture one standard shot and one night-mode shot where available.
- Photograph a moving subject to expose shutter and autofocus differences.
- Switch to the ultra-wide and repeat a daylight and low-light scene. Inspect the corners.
- Test a close-up object, then try a document or text page if scanning matters to you.
- Take a backlit portrait and an indoor selfie without beauty effects.
- Record a walking video and a slow pan. Check stabilisation, focus transitions and audio.
- Review the original files on a computer or tablet, not only on each phone’s display.
- Write down the camera app version, firmware and selected modes so you can reproduce any result after an update.
Common mistakes when comparing these phones
- Assuming OIS decides the winner: both cited sources report OIS on the main camera. OIS helps hand shake, not moving subjects, and does not equal identical video stabilisation.
- Treating megapixels as image quality: sensor size, optics, processing and exposure can outweigh a 12 MP versus 8 MP or 16 MP versus 12 MP difference.
- Using one night photograph: a single frame can be affected by focus, hand movement or a passing subject. Use several scenes and repeat the shot.
- Comparing different lenses: a main-camera image and an ultra-wide image have different fields of view and sensors. Match the lens before judging detail.
- Ignoring colour and dynamic range: TechRadar’s A57 review found some colour and dynamic-range difficulties, so an A57 relative win should not be interpreted as flawless processing.
- Mixing regional specifications: the Redmi figures cited here are from Malaysia, and the A57 figures come partly from a secondary comparison. Confirm the local model.
- Trusting compressed social-media samples: messaging and social platforms resize photos and remove metadata. Compare original files when possible.
Who should choose which camera?
Choose the Galaxy A57 5G if
- Your priority is handheld still photography in dim rooms and at night, and you accept that the evidence is one review outlet’s assessment.
- You frequently use an ultra-wide and prefer the reported 12 MP unit over the Redmi’s listed 8 MP unit.
- You want a dedicated macro camera and have tested that it produces useful close-ups for your subjects.
- You can verify Samsung’s local video specification and it meets your recording needs.
Choose the REDMI Note 17 Pro 5G if
- You have access to the Malaysia-specification variant or another local model whose video modes meet your requirements.
- You value a 16 MP front camera on paper, but have checked actual face rendering and video quality.
- You use Xiaomi’s listed document, portrait, panorama or OTA-enabled underwater modes.
- Your own daylight and video tests show results you prefer, even if Notebookcheck’s low-light comparison favours the A57.
Keep comparing if neither is clearly right
Do not buy based on the 50 MP label, the presence of OIS or a single reviewer’s winner. If you shoot mostly moving children, pets or video, prioritise shutter and autofocus behaviour. If you shoot landscapes, inspect the ultra-wide. If you make frequent calls, test the front camera and microphone. A phone that wins your actual scenes is the better camera for you.
Sources and evidence boundaries
The direct A57-versus-Redmi camera judgement comes from Notebookcheck’s October 11, 2026 comparison. The A57’s mixed colour and dynamic-range observations come from TechRadar’s April 2026 standalone review. Xiaomi’s Malaysia page supplies the Redmi’s regional specifications and camera modes, while El Grupo Informático supplies the secondary side-by-side specification figures. None of these sources establishes a universal ranking for every country, firmware build or shooting condition.
