The Galaxy A56 5G has the stronger listed hardware: a 120Hz display, higher-resolution ultra-wide and macro cameras, IP67 protection and up to 45W charging. The Galaxy A17 5G shares its 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED screen size, 50MP main camera and six-year software-support promise, but Samsung’s March 2026 US list puts its unlocked 128GB MSRP $300 lower. That is a dated MSRP comparison, not a live-price verdict.

What changes in everyday use?
Display: same size, faster refresh on the A56
Both phones have a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display, so the headline size and panel type are alike. The A56’s listed maximum refresh rate is 120Hz, compared with 90Hz for the A17. A higher refresh rate can make scrolling and supported animations appear smoother; it does not by itself establish that the screen is brighter or better calibrated.

Cameras: higher-resolution secondary cameras on the A56
Samsung lists a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilization (OIS) on both models. The A56 adds a 12MP ultra-wide and 5MP macro camera, while the A17 lists a 5MP ultra-wide and 2MP macro. Those resolution differences describe the sensors, not a proven difference in image quality. Samsung’s cited A56 specifications include 4K/30fps video; the cited A17 page does not establish a maximum video resolution.

Battery and charging: only the A56 has figures established here
Samsung lists the A56 with a 5,000mAh typical battery, up to 45W charging and up to 29 hours of video viewing. These are manufacturer-stated figures, not independent battery or charging tests. The cited A17 specifications do not establish its battery capacity or charging speed, so they do not support a direct endurance or charging-time comparison.
Protection: IP67 is not waterproof
The A56 carries a manufacturer-rated IP67 classification, while Samsung describes the A17 as IP54 splash-protected. These ratings are not a promise that either phone is waterproof; avoid deliberate submersion and follow the manufacturer’s care guidance. Samsung also lists a metal frame and Gorilla Glass Victus+ for the A56, and Gorilla Glass Victus for the A17.

How much more did the A56 cost?
In Samsung’s US MSRP list effective March 2026, the unlocked 128GB A56 is listed at $499.99 and the unlocked 128GB A17 at $199.99. Subtracting those listed prices gives a $300 difference. The document marks both entries EOL and says prices may change without notice, so these figures are a dated US MSRP reference—not current retail prices, a guarantee of stock, or a comparison for other countries.

How long will Samsung support each phone?
Samsung states that both phones are eligible for six generations of OS upgrades and six years of security support or updates. Samsung cautions that update availability and timing may vary by device model and market. The published promises put the two models on comparable terms for the stated support duration; they do not establish identical update schedules in every region.
Which Galaxy should you choose?
- Choose the A56 if the higher listed refresh rate, more capable-on-paper secondary camera sensors, IP67 rating or listed 45W charging matter to you—and its current local price makes sense.
- Consider the A17 if you want the same listed screen size and panel type, a 50MP main camera and Samsung’s stated six-year support commitment, and find it at a substantially lower current price.
- Compare live local offers before buying either. The $300 gap is specific to Samsung’s March 2026 US list for unlocked 128GB models, and both entries were marked EOL on that list.
Neither specification sheet establishes a performance winner, and the cited sources do not provide independent side-by-side camera, benchmark or battery testing. Treat the comparison as a guide to listed hardware and support, not a substitute for verified local pricing or real-world test results.
