Short answer: The Galaxy A37 5G is a modest but sensible upgrade. It starts with newer software, has a higher IP68 protection rating instead of the A36’s IP67, and uses a newer processor in at least some markets. The screen, camera resolutions, battery capacity and dimensions are almost unchanged.
Choose the A37 if you want the newer starting point and expect to keep the phone for several years. Choose an A36 only when a genuine, same-storage unit is substantially cheaper and you are comfortable buying an older model whose US stock is already marked end-of-life.

Samsung announced US availability for the Galaxy A37 5G from April 9, 2026. The Galaxy A36 5G launched in the US in 2025. Release dates and memory or color options can differ in other countries; Samsung’s global announcement says the A37 began arriving in selected markets on April 10, 2026. The practical buying advice below therefore focuses on the US market while identifying facts that are region-dependent.

What actually changed
Android 16 and a later support starting point
The A37 launched with Android 16 and One UI 8.5, while the A36 launched with Android 15 and One UI 7.0. That difference matters even if the interface looks familiar: a phone that starts one generation later has more of its support life ahead of it when you buy it.
Samsung describes support for the relevant devices as “up to six generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades, along with up to six years of security updates.” The company measures that promise from a device’s first global launch, and availability and timing can vary by market and model. “Up to” is important: it is not a guarantee that every regional SKU will receive identical updates on the same day, nor does the published promise establish a precise final Android version for either phone.
For a buyer who intends to keep a phone through several years of banking, messaging and work use, the A37’s newer launch software is a practical advantage. It does not automatically make the A37 faster, and it does not justify assuming a specific end-of-support date without checking Samsung’s policy for your exact model and country.
IP68 instead of IP67
Samsung rates the A37 IP68 and the A36 IP67. In Samsung’s stated laboratory conditions, the A37 was tested in up to 1.5 metres of freshwater for up to 30 minutes; the A36’s stated test condition is up to 1 metre for up to 30 minutes. The ratings describe resistance to dust and fresh-water ingress under controlled testing, not permanent waterproofing.

Samsung advises against using either phone at the beach or pool and warns that resistance can diminish over time. Salt water, chlorinated water, drops that damage seals, pressure, heat and normal ageing are outside the simple “submerged for 30 minutes” interpretation. The A37 gives you a larger laboratory margin, which is useful insurance against rain or an accidental freshwater dunk, but it is not permission to swim with the phone.
A newer processor, with a regional warning
Samsung’s Indonesian comparison names Exynos 1480 for the A37 and describes it as more responsive for multitasking and artificial-intelligence features. That is vendor commentary, not an independent benchmark. More importantly, the statement applies to the Indonesian product information and should not be silently applied to a US handset.

Before buying an A37 in the United States, open the listing or the device specification page and verify the model number and processor. If the US version uses a different chip, the Indonesian comparison cannot predict its performance. No independent CPU, graphics, battery or thermal benchmark is established here, so there is no defensible claim that the A37 delivers a particular percentage speed increase.
An image-processing update without a camera-hardware change
Samsung says the A37 has an improved image signal processor. The US comparison tables still list the same camera-resolution combination as the A36: a 50MP main camera, 8MP ultrawide, 5MP macro and 12MP front camera. An ISP can affect processing, autofocus behaviour, noise reduction and computational features, but the specifications alone do not prove that one phone takes better photographs in every scene.
There is no independent comparative camera test or score in the available material. Treat the A37’s ISP statement as a Samsung feature claim rather than a measured guarantee. If photography is your deciding factor, compare full-resolution samples from the exact regional models you can buy rather than inferring image quality from megapixels.

A higher launch price and an older model approaching the end of supply
Samsung announced the A37 at a US starting price of $449.99, with availability from April 9, 2026. Samsung Electronics America’s March 2026 MSRP file listed an unlocked 128GB Galaxy A36 at $399.99 and marked that SKU “EOL.” The file is a dated manufacturer price reference, not proof that every retailer charged that amount or that units were still available.

What stayed almost the same
Display
Both phones use a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. That means the A37 is not a smaller or higher-refresh replacement for the A36. Scrolling and animation can look smooth on both when the software selects the higher rate, while the “up to” wording means the phone can vary refresh behaviour to balance smoothness and power use.
Samsung’s cited material does not establish a brightness advantage, a different panel resolution, a new glass specification or a measured outdoor-visibility result for the A37. Do not pay an upgrade premium expecting a fundamentally different screen based only on the model year.
Camera resolutions
The rear and front resolution figures are unchanged in Samsung’s US tables. The A37’s processing improvements may affect results, but there is no supplied side-by-side test to quantify that effect. The A36 therefore remains capable of the same stated camera formats on paper, while the A37’s advantage is its newer processing platform rather than a different lens-resolution set.

Battery capacity and charging accessories
Each phone lists a typical 5,000mAh battery. Typical capacity is a component specification, not a promise of equal screen-on time: processor efficiency, modem use, display settings, signal strength, software and temperature all affect endurance. No controlled battery comparison is established for these models.
The A36 announcement lists 45W charging support and says the charger and cable are sold separately. Samsung’s A37 US launch material mentions a 45W charger in broader A-series material, but the exact charging compatibility for the particular A37 model should be confirmed before you buy an adapter. Do not assume that a charger included with a retailer bundle, or a charger from another phone, is part of the standard box.
Size and handling
Samsung lists both phones at 162.9 × 78.2 × 7.4 mm. The A37 is listed at 196g and the A36 at 195g, so the new model is nominally 1g heavier rather than slimmer or lighter. Existing A36 cases and screen protectors should not be assumed to fit: buy an accessory whose listing explicitly names the exact model and confirms cutout compatibility.
How the differences affect everyday ownership
If you keep phones for four years or more
The A37’s later Android starting point and newer launch date are the strongest reasons to choose it. Samsung’s support language is measured from first global launch, so the newer model should have a later position in the same support window, subject to your market’s rollout schedule. That can matter more than a small short-term price difference when the phone will handle security-sensitive accounts for years.
If accidental water exposure worries you
IP68 is the A37’s clearest physical upgrade. It increases the stated freshwater test depth from the A36’s 1-metre condition to 1.5 metres, while the time remains up to 30 minutes. Still, both phones need sensible care: keep ports clear, avoid deliberate immersion, and do not treat either rating as coverage for liquid damage under every circumstance.

If you want a major speed or gaming upgrade
The available evidence does not support that conclusion. A newer processor is plausible for the A37, and Samsung promotes the Exynos 1480 in Indonesia, but the US chip is not confirmed by the supplied material and no independent benchmark is provided. Buyers prioritising demanding games should verify the US SKU and consult independent tests of that exact device rather than relying on the model name.
If you mainly care about photography
The camera hardware numbers do not change. The A37’s improved ISP may produce processing benefits, but Samsung’s claim is not an independent image-quality measurement. Choose the A37 for its newer platform and potential processing improvements, not because the specification proves consistently better photos.
If battery life is the deciding factor
Neither phone has a documented capacity advantage: both list 5,000mAh typical. Real endurance remains unresolved without a controlled test under the same brightness, network and workload. The A36’s published 45W support is useful, but charging speed also depends on the approved charger, cable, temperature and charging state.

The apparent $50 difference is useful context but not a buying rule. Compare the same storage capacity, warranty status, carrier compatibility, seller reputation and return policy. An A36 advertised below its old MSRP may still be poor value if it is an imported or refurbished unit, while an A37 promotion may erase most of the launch premium.
The A36 being marked EOL also changes the risk calculation. Limited remaining inventory can make colors, storage tiers and official support channels harder to find. That does not make every remaining A36 a bad purchase; it means you should verify exactly what is being sold and avoid paying near-A37 money for an older, less protected configuration.
Which Galaxy should you buy?
Buy the Galaxy A37 5G when these priorities fit you
- You want the newer Android and One UI starting point.
- You value the higher IP68 laboratory rating for everyday accident protection.
- You plan to keep the phone for several years and want the later launch position in Samsung’s support window.
- The current A37 price premium is modest after matching storage, condition and warranty.
- You have confirmed the processor and network bands for your regional model.
Buy the Galaxy A36 5G when these conditions are all true
- You found a verified, in-stock unit with the storage capacity you actually need.
- It is meaningfully cheaper than an equivalent A37, not merely a few dollars less.
- You are satisfied with Android 15/One UI 7.0 as the starting software and the shorter remaining support window.
- IP67 is sufficient for your use and you do not expect deliberate water exposure.
- The seller clearly states whether the phone is new, refurbished, unlocked or carrier-locked and provides an appropriate return policy.
Use this price rule
Do not compare the A37 launch price with an A36 bargain listing at a different storage tier. First match storage, condition, warranty and network compatibility. If the A36 discount is large enough to outweigh its older software, lower ingress rating and limited supply, it remains a rational value choice. If the gap is small, the A37’s newer starting point is the safer long-term purchase.

- Match storage and condition. Compare like-for-like capacity and identify new, open-box, refurbished and used units.
- Check software at first boot. The A37 should start from its Android 16/One UI 8.5 generation, while the A36 launched with Android 15/One UI 7.0; available updates can vary by region.
- Verify warranty and returns. An EOL A36 may come from third-party inventory, so read the warranty provider and return period before paying.
- Confirm charging expectations. Check whether a charger is included and whether the exact model supports the charging rate you plan to use. Samsung says the A36 charger and cable are sold separately.
- Buy model-specific protection. Select a case or screen protector that explicitly names the phone model and confirms its camera and port cutouts.
- Recheck the final price on the day you order. The published $449.99 A37 launch price and $399.99 A36 MSRP are historical reference points, not live price guarantees.
Claims the specifications cannot prove
- They do not prove that the A37 lasts longer on a charge; both list 5,000mAh typical capacity and no controlled endurance test is supplied.
- They do not prove that the A37 takes better photos in every lighting condition; camera resolutions are the same and the ISP improvement is a Samsung claim without an independent score here.
- They do not prove a universal A37 processor configuration; Exynos 1480 is identified by Samsung Indonesia, while the US SKU still requires confirmation.
- They do not make either phone waterproof; IP ratings come from controlled freshwater tests and resistance can diminish over time.

The Galaxy A37 5G is the better default choice for a new purchase because it combines a later software starting point with IP68 protection and a newer-generation platform. The Galaxy A36 5G makes sense as a budget option only when a trustworthy, matching unit is clearly cheaper. Because Samsung’s March 2026 US list marks the 128GB A36 SKU EOL, verify supply and condition carefully. The final decision should be based on the live price gap and your priorities: longevity and ingress protection favour the A37; a large, verified discount can justify the A36.
