Choose the Galaxy A34 5G if you want the larger screen and the lower launch price. These mid-range phones share the fundamentals that matter for long ownership: a 120Hz FHD+ Super AMOLED display, a 5,000mAh typical battery, microSD expansion up to 1TB, IP67 protection, and Samsung’s stated support target of up to four generations of Android OS upgrades plus five years of security updates.
The A54 is not automatically the better buy. Its advantages are concentrated in imaging and size, while the A34 delivers the bigger viewing area for less money. The right choice depends on whether you will notice better cameras more often than you notice a larger display.

Samsung Galaxy A34 vs A54 at a glance
The two models launched together in 2023 as closely related 5G phones. Their shared display technology, battery rating, storage expansion, water-and-dust resistance and published software policy make this a comparison of priorities rather than a choice between radically different platforms.

Display and physical handling
When the A34’s larger screen helps
The A34’s 6.6-inch panel is 0.2 inches larger diagonally than the A54’s 6.4-inch panel. Both are FHD+ Super AMOLED screens with a 120Hz refresh rate and Vision Booster, so the A34’s advantage is viewing area rather than a higher stated resolution or smoother specification. A larger panel is useful for reading two-column web pages, editing photos, watching video, using split-screen apps and tapping an on-screen keyboard.
#1 Best Overall
- Equipped with a 6.4″ Super AMOLED display that supports a smooth 120 Hz refresh rate and offers up to 1,000 nits of peak brightness, the Galaxy A54 5G delivers vibrant visuals, rich contrast, and excellent readability even in bright outdoor conditions.
The trade-off is size in the hand and in a pocket. Samsung lists the A34 as 161.3mm tall and 78.1mm wide. That extra width can make one-handed typing or reaching the opposite top corner less comfortable, especially if you use a case.
When the A54’s smaller body helps
The A54 measures 158.2mm tall and 76.7mm wide, making it the easier model to handle if you prefer a narrower phone. It is not lighter on paper: Samsung lists 202g for the A54 versus 199g for the A34. The three-gram difference is small, while the reduced height and width are more likely to affect grip and pocket fit.
Neither phone wins on refresh rate or stated display resolution. Select between them according to physical size: A34 for maximum viewing area, A54 for a more compact outline. Vision Booster is listed for both, so neither phone has a stated screen-brightness advantage.
Camera comparison: where the A54 earns its premium
Main camera
The A54 has a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilisation (OIS); the A34 has a 48MP OIS main camera. Both therefore have stabilised primary cameras, but the A54 carries the higher listed resolution. Resolution alone does not guarantee better photographs, yet the specification gives the A54 more headroom for detail and cropping. If still photography is a deciding factor, the A54 is the safer choice based on the published camera hardware.

- GSM Unlocked: GSM unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Cricket, Metro, etc.)
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charger and charging cable that may be generic.
- Display: 6.4" Screen, 104.9 cm2 (~80.2% screen-to-body ratio) 1080 x 2408 pixels, 20:9 ratio (~400 ppi density)
- Accelerometer, Light Sensor, Proximity Sensor
- Octa-core (2x2.6 GHz Cortex-A78 & 6x2.0 GHz Cortex-A55) Mali-G68 MC4 | 5,000mAh battery
Ultrawide camera
The difference is larger on the ultrawide camera: 12MP on the A54 versus 8MP on the A34. Ultrawide lenses are useful for architecture, landscapes, group photographs and cramped interiors where stepping back is impossible. The A54’s higher listed resolution should preserve more detail in those scenes, although no controlled image-quality test is established here.
Macro camera
Both phones list a 5MP macro camera. Because the resolution is the same, macro capability does not separate the models on the available specifications. Treat it as a shared feature rather than a reason to pay more for the A54.
Selfies and video calls
The front-camera gap is substantial on paper: 32MP for the A54 and 13MP for the A34. People who take frequent selfies, record front-facing clips or use a phone as a video-call camera have a clear specification advantage with the A54. The number does not describe every aspect of image processing, but it is the strongest stated camera distinction between these phones.
Choose the A54 when camera versatility is a routine need, not merely an occasional preference. Choose the A34 if most of your photographs are casual snapshots and you would rather allocate the launch-price difference to storage or accessories.

Battery life and charging expectations
Samsung rates both models at a 5,000mAh typical battery capacity. That means the A34 does not have a larger battery reserve than the A54, despite its larger display, and the A54 does not have a smaller rated battery because its body is more compact.
Battery capacity is not a promise of equal runtime. Samsung cautions that actual battery life varies with network conditions, usage and other factors. Screen brightness, time spent on mobile data, camera use, gaming, navigation and signal strength can all change the result. The available specifications therefore cannot establish that the A34 lasts longer, nor that the A54 lasts longer. If someone claims a universal winner on battery life from capacity alone, that conclusion goes beyond the evidence.
For the same reason, do not choose between these phones expecting a documented charging advantage: the supplied specifications state capacity but do not state charging wattage or comparative charging times. Base the battery decision on the equal rating and your usage pattern, not on an assumed endurance winner.

Durability and long-term ownership
IP67 water and dust resistance
Samsung’s regional announcement gives both phones an IP67 rating. In that statement, IP67 protection is described as resistance to dust and immersion in fresh water to a depth of up to 1 metre for up to 30 minutes. Because the same rating and conditions are stated for both, durability does not provide a reason to choose one model over the other.

IP ratings describe laboratory test conditions, not every real-world liquid incident. The statement specifies fresh water; it does not establish protection against salt water, soapy water, pressurised spray or damage caused by impact. Handle either phone according to the manufacturer’s warranty and care guidance rather than treating the rating as permission for deliberate submersion.
Glass protection
Samsung’s India announcement quotes Senior Director Aditya Babbar describing both phones as having Gorilla Glass 5 protection, alongside the IP67 rating and four Android OS updates. The announcement does not, in the supplied material, specify which surfaces use that glass or define a drop guarantee. A case and screen protector remain sensible if preventing cosmetic or impact damage is important.
Software support
Samsung says both models receive up to four generations of OS upgrades and five years of security updates. “Up to” is important: it is a published support commitment, not a promise that every update arrives on the same day in every country. Rollout timing can vary by region, carrier and certification. Since the policy is the same, software longevity is a tie between the A34 and A54 on the available information.
Storage, memory and launch configurations
Both phones accept an optional microSD card with capacity up to 1TB. That shared expansion is valuable if you keep offline video, music, photos or large game files, and it reduces the pressure to pay for a higher internal-storage tier. Check the card’s specification and the phone’s current regional listing before buying, because the 1TB figure is the maximum stated support, not a card included in the box.

| UK launch configuration (2023) | Galaxy A54 5G launch RRP | Galaxy A34 5G launch RRP |
|---|---|---|
| 128GB internal storage | £449 with 8GB RAM | £349 with 6GB RAM |
| 256GB internal storage | £499 with 8GB RAM | £399 with 8GB RAM |
These are Samsung Newsroom U.K. launch RRPs from 2023, not current shop prices. At both listed capacities, the A34 launched £100 below the A54. The comparison is most direct at 256GB because both versions list 8GB of RAM. At 128GB, the A54 also lists 8GB while the A34 lists 6GB, so the £100 difference buys both the A54’s camera hardware and a higher stated memory configuration.
Current prices, stock, carrier promotions and refurbished offers can change the value calculation. Before ordering, verify the country, storage tier, RAM configuration, seller, warranty and final price; do not assume the original UK RRP still applies or that a deal in one market exists in another.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which phone should you buy?
Choose the Galaxy A54 5G if you:
- Take selfies or use the front camera often and want the higher listed 32MP resolution.
- Use the ultrawide camera for groups, travel, buildings or interiors and value its 12MP specification.
- Prefer a shorter, narrower handset for one-handed use and pockets.
- Are comfortable paying the higher launch price for the camera and body advantages.
- Want the 8GB RAM configuration in the 128GB UK launch tier.
Choose the Galaxy A34 5G if you:
- Want the larger 6.6-inch display for reading, video, maps or split-screen work.
- Prefer to spend less while keeping the same stated battery capacity, 120Hz FHD+ Super AMOLED display class, IP67 rating and software-support policy.
- Plan to add a microSD card and would rather reserve money for storage or protection.
- Do not frequently rely on selfies or ultrawide photography.
- Prefer the slightly lower listed weight, accepting the wider and taller body.
Choose neither based only on battery capacity or update policy
Those categories are ties in the supplied specifications. Both list a 5,000mAh typical battery, and both carry Samsung’s stated four-generation OS and five-year security-update policy. Use camera requirements, screen size, handling and the actual price in your market to break the tie.
A practical buying decision in three steps
- Set your camera threshold. If a higher-resolution selfie camera or 12MP ultrawide is worth £100 to you at the original UK launch comparison, start with the A54. If not, continue with the A34 as the default value choice.
- Check your preferred size in person or against a phone you already own. The A34 is taller and wider; the A54 is shorter and narrower but marginally heavier. Cases add further bulk, so account for the accessory you intend to use.
- Verify the exact local listing before paying. Confirm model name, 128GB or 256GB storage, RAM, seller, warranty, current price and whether a microSD card or case is included. The published UK figures are historical launch RRPs and do not predict today’s offer.
Accessories and compatibility checks
A microSD card is the most directly supported storage upgrade for either model, with Samsung listing capacity up to 1TB. Match the card to your storage needs and confirm the phone’s regional tray configuration before purchase.
Cases and screen protectors are model-specific. The A34 and A54 differ in height and width, so an A34 case should not be assumed to fit the A54, or vice versa. Buy an accessory labelled for the exact model and verify camera-cutout alignment.
Final verdict
For most buyers who care about photography, selfies and easier handling, the Galaxy A54 5G is the stronger choice. Its 50MP main camera, 12MP ultrawide and 32MP front camera address the areas where the A34’s listed hardware is most limited, while its support policy, battery rating, display class, microSD support and IP67 rating match the cheaper phone.
The Galaxy A34 5G is the better value when the larger display is your priority or when the lower price matters more than camera resolution. It preserves the same core ownership features and launched £100 below the corresponding A54 storage tiers in the UK. Because current prices and promotions change, make the final decision from the local, exact configuration rather than the 2023 launch RRP alone.
