For most buyers who only need 4G, the Galaxy A18 is the better buy: it is newer, has a higher IP64 protection rating, adds newer AI functions and is reported by Samsung to be faster than the Galaxy A16. Choose the Galaxy A16 5G instead if 5G is essential, if the A16 is substantially cheaper in your country, or if an A18 is not sold locally. Check the exact model code before paying, because the A18’s processor, memory and network capability vary by market.
What the Galaxy A18 and Galaxy A16 represent
The Galaxy A18 is a 2026 successor-era budget phone. Samsung’s European announcement identifies an LTE/4G model using the Exynos 1610, while Samsung Indonesia lists an A18 LTE configuration with a Helio G99+ processor. Those are not contradictory specifications: Samsung sells different hardware under the same Galaxy A18 name in different regions.

The Galaxy A16 arrived in November 2024 in both LTE and 5G forms. Its 5G version uses an Exynos 1330 in Samsung’s regional material; the LTE version is listed with a Helio G99. Consequently, “A16” is not one universal specification, and “A18” does not automatically mean 5G.

Does the Galaxy A18 support 5G?
Do not assume that it does. The A18 announcements cited here describe LTE/4G versions, and the Indonesian listing names a Helio G99+, a 4G processor. Samsung’s European announcement likewise identifies an Exynos 1610 configuration rather than a 5G modem.
The Galaxy A16 was explicitly launched in LTE and 5G versions, so an A16 5G is the clearer option if you need access to a 5G network. Availability can still differ by country and carrier. A retailer may use “A18” for a regional model that is not the same as the one sold elsewhere.
How to verify the network version
- Open the retailer’s full specification page and find the model number, not just the product name.
- Check Samsung’s support page for your country and match that model number to the listed bands and modem.
- Confirm that the phone supports the 5G bands used by your carrier; a phone can be advertised as 5G and still lack a band required in your region.
- Ask whether the listing is LTE, 5G or dual-SIM, and retain the invoice in case the delivered SKU differs.
Performance: how much faster is the A18?
Samsung Newsroom Norway reports that the Galaxy A18 is 32% faster in single-core performance, 7% faster in multi-core performance and 7% faster in GPU performance than the Galaxy A16. Samsung published those percentages; they are not independent laboratory results, and the comparison does not establish identical memory, software or test conditions for every regional model.

Single-core performance affects the feel of opening apps, navigating menus and responding to short, everyday tasks. Multi-core performance matters more when several processes run at once, while GPU performance influences games and graphics-heavy interfaces. The gains are therefore useful, but they should not be interpreted as a guarantee of a particular frame rate or battery life.

- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
Processor names also differ by market. An A18 with Exynos 1610 is not the same silicon as an Indonesian A18 with Helio G99+, just as an A16 5G with Exynos 1330 differs from an LTE A16 with Helio G99. If you are replacing an older phone, compare the exact processor and RAM configuration shown for your country rather than relying on a global review.
Who will notice the difference?
- Everyday users: the newer A18 should provide more headroom for multitasking and future Android versions, based on Samsung’s stated gains.
- Light gamers: the reported 7% GPU improvement is positive, but no independent gaming frame-rate result is established here.
- Heavy gamers: neither phone should be selected solely from the family name. Verify the local chipset, memory and game support, then consult tests for that exact SKU.
- Long-term owners: newer silicon gives the A18 a generation advantage, while both phones’ six-year security commitments reduce the software-support gap.
Display: a draw on the headline specifications
Both cited families use a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED panel with a refresh rate of up to 90Hz. AMOLED provides the high contrast and deep blacks associated with the technology, while 90Hz can make scrolling look smoother than a conventional 60Hz display.
There is no established A18 advantage in size, resolution or maximum refresh rate. Brightness, outdoor readability, calibration, touch response and the exact panel used can vary by market, and the available specifications do not provide a standardized laboratory brightness figure. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, check a local hands-on review of the exact model rather than assuming the newer phone has a brighter screen.

The cited variants give both phones the same headline camera layout: a 50MP main camera, a 5MP ultra-wide camera, a 2MP macro camera and a 13MP selfie camera. On specifications alone, neither phone has a clear resolution advantage.
Rank #3
What the cameras are suited to
- 50MP main camera: the primary choice for daylight photos and most ordinary scenes.
- 5MP ultra-wide: useful for fitting landscapes, buildings or groups into the frame, but its lower resolution leaves less room for cropping.
- 2MP macro: intended for close subjects at the supported focus distance; it is a specialist mode rather than a replacement for the main camera.
- 13MP front camera: provides the same stated resolution for selfies and video calls on both families.
Camera quality can still differ because image processing, autofocus tuning, HDR behavior and night-mode software are not captured by megapixel counts. No independent camera-quality result was established for this comparison, so do not pay an A18 premium solely on the assumption that its photos will be dramatically better. If imaging is your deciding factor, compare sample photos from the same country variant and software version.
Battery and charging: equal capacity, no published runtime winner
Both phones use a 5,000mAh battery and support 25W wired charging. That gives neither model a capacity advantage, and the charging specification is the same. Samsung notes that the compatible charger may be sold separately, so check the box contents before budgeting for accessories.
Battery capacity is not the same as endurance. Runtime depends on the processor, display brightness, network signal, refresh-rate behavior, software and usage mix. The cited material does not publish a controlled battery-runtime figure for either phone, so claims such as “the A18 lasts a full day longer” would be unsupported. Expect charging time and endurance to vary between the A18’s regional chipsets and between LTE and 5G versions of the A16.
Protection and physical durability
The Galaxy A18 is rated IP64, while the Galaxy A16 is rated IP54. In the IP code, the first digit describes protection against solid particles and the second describes resistance to water exposure under the stated test conditions. The A18’s higher first digit indicates stronger dust protection, and its “4” water rating is above the A16’s “4” only in the sense that both share the same splash-resistance level; the meaningful upgrade is the dust rating.
Rank #4
Neither rating makes a phone waterproof or suitable for deliberate submersion. Keep charging ports dry, avoid salt water and follow Samsung’s care instructions. A damaged seal, cracked frame or repaired handset may no longer provide the rated protection.
Software support and newer AI functions
Samsung’s launch material gives both the A18 and A16 six generations of operating-system updates and six years of security updates. That is a major strength at this price level: a buyer can keep the phone longer without immediately losing security patches or access to newer Android releases.
The A18 also adds newer AI functions in its launch positioning. The available material does not define every function or promise identical availability in every country, so check the local product page for the specific tools, language support and account requirements. AI features can be enabled, changed or restricted by software updates and region.
The support promise does not remove the need to check update timing. “Six generations” describes the number of major OS upgrades promised, while security updates can follow a separate schedule. Carrier approval may also delay an update compared with an unlocked model.

Storage and memory: choose the local configuration, not the maximum advertised one
Samsung Norway lists the A18 in 128GB and 256GB versions. Samsung Indonesia lists a 128GB model with either 4GB or 8GB of RAM. The A16 is also sold with 128GB or 256GB, depending on the market and variant.
Storage determines how much room remains for apps, photos, offline maps and video after the operating system occupies part of the advertised capacity. RAM affects how many apps can remain ready in the background. If you plan to keep the phone for several years, 256GB or the higher-memory option can reduce the need to delete media, but only if that configuration is actually sold in your country.
Price and value by market
Launch prices are not interchangeable between countries or dates. They are useful for context, not for converting into a current local price with a simple currency calculation.

| Phone and market | Published price | Configuration and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy A18, Norway | 3,290 NOK / 5,190 NOK | Two launch price points; the cited material associates Norway with 128GB and 256GB availability |
| Galaxy A18, Indonesia | Rp4,299,000 / Rp5,299,000 | 4GB/128GB and 8GB/128GB launch prices, respectively |
| Galaxy A16 LTE, United Kingdom | £169 | UK launch price for the LTE model |
| Galaxy A16 5G, United Kingdom | £199 | UK launch price for the 5G model |
| Galaxy A16, United States | $169.99 | 128GB MSRP published in March 2026 |
Use the price for your country, tax situation, storage tier and network version. A discounted A16 5G can be better value than a full-price A18 if you need 5G, while an A18 is easier to justify when the local gap is small and you value the newer processor, IP64 rating or 256GB option.
Which phone should you buy?
Choose the Galaxy A18 when
- You want the newer model and expect to keep it for several years.
- Your carrier and usage are well served by LTE, and the local A18 listing is confirmed as 4G.
- You value Samsung’s reported performance uplift, newer AI functions or the stronger IP64 dust rating.
- The A18 is available with more storage or RAM for a reasonable premium.
Choose the Galaxy A16 5G when
- 5G connectivity is a requirement rather than a nice-to-have.
- The A16 5G is clearly cheaper after accounting for storage, RAM, warranty and promotions.
- The A18 is unavailable, or the only A18 listing has a processor or band configuration unsuitable for your carrier.
Choose the Galaxy A16 LTE when
- You only need 4G and find a substantial local discount.
- You want the same basic display, camera layout, battery capacity and long support promise at a lower price.
- You have confirmed that the LTE model’s processor and storage meet your needs.
Buying checklist: avoid the common A18 and A16 mistakes
- Identify the model code. “Galaxy A18” and “Galaxy A16” names cover multiple regional configurations.
- Confirm 4G or 5G. Look for the network designation in the listing and verify the supported bands with your carrier.
- Record RAM and storage. A 4GB/128GB A18 is a different buying proposition from an 8GB/128GB or 256GB version.
- Check the processor. Match Exynos 1610, Helio G99+, Exynos 1330 or Helio G99 to the exact SKU; do not assume every region receives the same chip.
- Check what is in the box. The 25W charger may be sold separately, so include its cost if you do not already own a compatible charger.
- Verify software and AI availability. Update promises and feature availability can depend on country, carrier, language and account settings.
- Compare the final local price. Use the delivered price with tax, warranty and return terms rather than converting an overseas launch MSRP.
Bottom line for the A18 versus A16 decision
The Galaxy A18 is the stronger all-around 4G choice because it is newer, Samsung reports measurable performance gains over the A16, and it improves the protection rating while adding newer AI features. Its screen, camera resolutions, battery capacity, charging rate and stated software-support length are not materially ahead of the A16, so the upgrade is not about every specification.
The Galaxy A16 5G remains the better answer when 5G is non-negotiable or when its verified local price is much lower. Before ordering either phone, match the model code, chipset, memory and network bands to your country. That check matters more than the A18 or A16 label on the box.
