Verdict: The Samsung Galaxy A02s is still usable for calls, messaging, maps, music and occasional streaming, but it is too slow and too old to recommend as most people’s primary phone in 2026. Its 5,000mAh battery, large screen, USB-C port, headphone jack and microSD slot remain useful. Buy one only when it is substantially cheaper than a newer budget phone, the exact variant works on your carrier, and the battery is healthy.
Prefer the 4GB/64GB version where available. Treat 2GB/32GB and unknown-condition units as temporary or backup phones rather than long-term purchases.

What the Galaxy A02s is
Samsung introduced the Galaxy A02s as an entry-level Galaxy A-series phone for the 2021 market. Android Authority reported launch prices of $129.99 for a 3GB/32GB model and $159.99 for a 4GB/64GB model, while noting that memory and storage differed by country. Design and build quality
The A02s uses a textured plastic back that hides fingerprints better than glossy budget phones. It is a large, thick handset, with a waterdrop-style Infinity-V notch and a noticeable lower bezel. Reported dimensions differ by variant: Android Authority lists 164.2 × 75.9 × 9.1mm and 196g, while Samsung’s U.S. announcement lists 75.9 × 166.5 × 9.2mm and 198g. Those figures should not be combined as though they describe one universal model.
You get a USB-C port, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a single bottom-firing speaker. There is no listed IP water-resistance rating, so keep it away from water. The reviewed and listed variants have no fingerprint sensor; authentication relies on face recognition, PIN, password or pattern. Face unlock is convenient, but it is not the same level of biometric security or reliability as a fingerprint reader.
Display: large, readable, but only HD+
The 6.5-inch 1,600 × 720 LCD is practical for messages, websites and video. Its size can help older users, although the chassis is less pocket-friendly than smaller phones. HD+ resolution looks softer than the Full HD panels common on better budget devices, and an LCD cannot match AMOLED black levels and contrast. Performance: functional, not fast
Calls, texts, email, music, maps and light browsing generally work. The Snapdragon 450, however, is slow by 2026 standards. Android Authority observed frequent lag in Settings and while switching between apps, including while streaming Spotify. Scrolling in social apps, launching the camera and loading pages can take patience.

- 2GB or 3GB models: expect more aggressive app reloads and limited multitasking.
- 4GB/64GB: the preferable version, though it is still not a fast phone.
- Gaming: simple and older games are realistic; demanding 3D games are not a good reason to buy it.
- Storage pressure: a nearly full 32GB drive can make an already slow experience worse.
A microSD card can hold photos, videos and some app data, but it cannot add RAM or make the processor faster.
Battery life and charging
The 5,000mAh battery is the A02s’s strongest practical feature. Android Authority obtained roughly two days of moderate use in its review. Heavy gaming, weak cellular coverage and an aged second-hand battery can reduce that substantially. Because the cell is non-removable, battery condition is critical when buying used.
Charging is much less impressive. The phone supports 15W wired charging; Android Authority measured about 20% after 30 minutes from empty and more than two hours for a full charge. That is acceptable overnight but slow for emergency top-ups. A higher-wattage charger will not make the phone exceed its supported charging rate.
Cameras: one useful sensor and two limited extras
The rear camera array combines a 13MP main camera with 2MP macro and depth sensors; the selfie camera is 5MP. Rear video records up to 1080p at 30fps. The main camera can produce acceptable daylight photos, but low-light results are weak and the reviewed software had no dedicated night mode.

The macro camera needs substantial light and produces little useful detail. The depth sensor supports portrait effects but does not take independent photographs. Android Authority found portrait separation surprisingly good in some scenes yet inconsistent around complicated edges. There is no ultrawide camera. Software and update status in 2026
The phone launched with Android 10 and One UI 2.5 or a One UI Core variant, depending on market. Android Authority documented an Android 11 update with One UI 3.1 during testing.
Samsung’s update page for international model SM-A025F documents Android 12 with One UI Core 4.1 and an August 1, 2024 security patch released August 29, 2024. Samsung warns that software can differ by model, country and service provider, so this is not proof that every U.S. carrier or unlocked A02s received the same release. Samsung SM-A025F update history
Before buying, open Settings → About phone to record the model number, then use Settings → Software update → Download and install. In August 2026, treat the A02s as an aging device with no assumed future major Android support.

Connectivity, NFC and security features
The A02s is LTE-only, not 5G. A used unit may be carrier-locked, blacklisted, incompatible with local LTE bands or missing the VoLTE support required by a particular network. Verify the exact model before purchase.
NFC is regional rather than universal: Notebookcheck found it on a European test device, while Samsung’s U.S. announcement does not establish NFC for every U.S. configuration. Check Settings → Connections for an NFC option or confirm the model-specific specification sheet. Notebookcheck also reported unusually poor Wi-Fi throughput on its test device with a modern Wi-Fi 6 router; treat that as a regional test result to investigate, not a guaranteed defect on every A02s. There is no fingerprint reader. Face recognition is primarily a convenience feature, so buyers who want quick, dependable biometric unlocking may prefer a newer budget phone with a side-mounted sensor.

Used-buying checklist
- Record the model number under Settings → About phone.
- Confirm RAM, internal storage, SIM configuration, NFC and regional LTE bands.
- Check that the phone is unlocked, has a clean IMEI and supports your carrier’s VoLTE service.
- Test a SIM, calls, mobile data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, cameras, speaker, microphone, touchscreen, buttons, USB-C port and headphone jack.
- Ask about rapid battery drain, overheating, unexpected shutdowns and charging interruptions.
- Inspect for cracks, liquid damage, screen burn-in and a swollen battery.
- Have the seller remove Google, Samsung and enterprise-management accounts, then factory-reset the phone to the normal setup screen.
- Use a return window; a microSD card can expand storage, but it cannot fix slow performance.
Who should buy the Galaxy A02s?
Reasonable uses
- Very cheap backup or emergency phone.
- Basic phone for a child or older relative when large text and long battery life matter.
- Calls, messaging, maps, music, email and occasional video.
Reasons to skip it
- You need several more years of Android and security updates.
- You multitask heavily, play demanding games or expect fast app launches.
- You need dependable low-light photography, an ultrawide camera, 5G, fast charging or fingerprint unlocking.
- The seller offers a 2GB/32GB unit with unknown battery health at a price close to a newer phone.
Final recommendation
The Galaxy A02s remains usable, but “usable” should not be confused with responsive. Its battery, screen size, headphone jack and expandable storage are still attractive; its speed, cameras, charging, biometrics and update outlook are not. In 2026, buy an unlocked 4GB/64GB unit only at a genuinely low price and with a healthy battery, verified carrier compatibility and a return option. For a dependable main phone or a multi-year purchase, choose a newer model instead.
