Neither desktop mode is the universal winner. Samsung DeX is the clearer choice when your Galaxy phone or tablet is on Samsung’s supported list and you want a dedicated external-display workspace, including wired HDMI or compatible wireless displays. Motorola Smart Connect is more attractive when your Motorola handset supports the connection you need and you want Mobile desktop integrated with a paired PC. The deciding factors are your exact phone, wired versus wireless video, PC requirements, and preferred keyboard, mouse, and touchpad controls.
What Samsung DeX and Motorola Smart Connect actually do
Both features turn a compatible Android phone into a larger-screen, desktop-style workspace. Instead of viewing a phone-sized interface, you use app windows, a taskbar and pointer-based controls on a monitor, television or paired computer. The phone remains the source of the session, so the experience depends on the handset’s display-output hardware, software version and the apps you run.

Samsung calls its environment DeX. Samsung documents two display routes: a cable connection, normally through a DeX/HDMI cable or adapter, and wireless DeX to a supported Samsung TV, Smart Monitor or another Miracast-capable display. Selected Galaxy tablets and the Z TriFold can also run DeX in a standalone mode, without an external display. Samsung’s support lists are feature-specific, so a Galaxy device that supports one route may not support every other route.

Motorola separates support into wired display, wireless display and PC workflows in its compatibility chart. That means “Smart Connect supported” is not enough information by itself: you need to check whether your particular model supports the connection you intend to use.

The table is a decision aid, not a promise that every phone in either range has every feature. Manufacturer compatibility pages change as new handsets and software versions arrive, and regional availability can differ.
Which phone has the better desktop mode?
Choose DeX for a display-first setup
DeX is the stronger fit if your priority is a conventional monitor or television workspace and your Galaxy model supports the required route. Samsung documents both wired and wireless display connections, so you can choose a cable for a direct connection or a compatible Miracast-capable screen for a cable-free session. The phone can serve as a touchpad, while a separate keyboard and mouse provide more familiar pointer and text-entry control.
DeX is also the more relevant option if you own a supported Galaxy tablet and want a standalone DeX workspace. Selected tablets and the Z TriFold can run DeX without relying on an external screen, while compatible Galaxy phones and tablets can use the external-display modes.
Choose Smart Connect for a PC-centered Motorola workflow
Smart Connect is the better match when your Motorola phone and computer are part of the same workflow. Motorola’s Mobile desktop mode is designed to run on a display or paired PC, and the documented process lets you select a paired device and start the session from Smart Connect. You can adjust the Mobile desktop window’s orientation and resolution, which is useful when the PC or display has a different aspect ratio from the phone.
This advantage is conditional rather than universal. Motorola’s compatibility chart distinguishes PC support from wired and wireless display support. A Motorola model may therefore support a PC session while lacking wired video output, or support wireless display but not the particular connection you planned to buy.

Do not choose on brand name alone
The exact handset is the first filter. Check the current support list for your model, software version and region before buying an adapter, monitor or docking accessory. A desktop mode label does not guarantee external video output, and an accessory cannot add video output to a phone whose hardware and software do not provide it.
Can you connect your phone to a monitor?
Samsung wired connection
- Confirm that your Galaxy phone or tablet appears on Samsung’s current DeX external-display support information.
- Check that the device and software version support the wired route, then connect a DeX/HDMI cable or a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter to the phone and monitor.
- Select the monitor’s HDMI input. DeX should present the desktop-style interface when the connection is recognized.
- Pair or connect a keyboard and mouse if you want pointer and text-entry control. If you do not have those peripherals, Samsung documents using the phone as a touchpad.
Use a cable when you need predictable video and do not want to depend on Miracast discovery or wireless-network conditions. The adapter remains conditional on the phone supporting wired display output.
Samsung wireless connection
- Verify that the Galaxy model is listed for wireless DeX.
- Use a compatible Samsung TV, Smart Monitor or another display that supports Miracast.
- Open the phone’s DeX connection controls, select the available display and accept the pairing prompt on the screen if one appears.
- Connect a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, or use the phone as a touchpad where supported.
Wireless DeX is convenient for a living-room television or a monitor mounted where a cable would be awkward. It is not a workaround for an unsupported Galaxy model or an incompatible display.
Motorola wired connection
- Open Motorola’s compatibility chart and confirm that your exact handset lists wired display support.
- Only after that check should you purchase or connect a USB-C-to-HDMI cable or adapter and attach the phone to the monitor.
- Choose the monitor’s video input and launch Mobile desktop if Smart Connect does not start automatically.
- Attach a keyboard and mouse if you need conventional desktop controls.
Motorola’s model-by-model distinction is important: a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter is a connector, not a guarantee that the phone can send video.
Motorola wireless connection
- Confirm that the handset supports wireless display in Motorola’s compatibility information.
- Prepare a compatible wireless display and keep the phone within the display’s normal connection range.
- Use Smart Connect to select the display, then choose Mobile desktop when the mode is offered.
- Connect Bluetooth input devices or use the controls available on the phone.
Display certification and phone support must match. A monitor that accepts Miracast cannot make a non-compatible Motorola handset produce a wireless desktop session.

How to start Motorola Mobile desktop on a paired PC
Motorola documents a PC-oriented flow separate from simply attaching an HDMI cable:

- Open Smart Connect on either device.
- Select the paired device in Smart Connect.
- Choose Mobile desktop.
- Start the session, then adjust the Mobile desktop window’s orientation and resolution if the PC display does not match the phone’s default layout.
The PC must be a supported pairing target for your specific handset. Check the compatibility chart before assuming that every Smart Connect-capable phone can use every PC function.
Samsung DeX for PC: an important software boundary
Samsung’s DeX for PC is not the same feature as display-based DeX. Samsung says DeX for PC is not supported on models running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later and directs users toward Link to Windows instead. That restriction does not mean display-based DeX is unavailable; it means you must distinguish a PC-hosted DeX session from a monitor or television connection.
If your plan is to run DeX inside a computer window, check the phone’s Android and One UI versions before you change your setup. If your plan is to connect directly to a monitor, verify the separate wired or wireless DeX support for the handset.
Workspace controls and app behavior
Keyboard, mouse and touchpad choices
Both systems support conventional input options, but the practical setup differs by connection. A Bluetooth keyboard and mouse are compact choices for either mode. Samsung also documents using the phone as a touchpad during DeX, which can get a session started without buying peripherals. Motorola documents taskbar actions and physical-keyboard shortcuts for Mobile desktop, so users who type frequently should check those controls on their model.

A mouse is useful for resizing windows and selecting small controls. A keyboard is more important for long writing sessions, shortcuts and navigation. If you use the phone as a touchpad, keep it on a stable surface within reach of the display.
Apps are not automatically desktop-optimized
Desktop mode changes the shell around an app; it does not rewrite the app itself. Window behavior, scaling and orientation can vary. Motorola explicitly notes that some apps incompatible with external displays can be used only on the phone. DeX users should apply the same practical caution: test the apps that matter to your work instead of assuming that every Android app will open as a resizable desktop window.
For a planned workflow, make a short list of essential apps—browser, mail, documents, messaging and any specialized tools—and test each one on the intended phone and display. Keep the phone available for apps that refuse external-display use.

USB-C-to-HDMI cable or adapter
This is the relevant wired accessory for a compatible Galaxy device and for a Motorola phone whose chart lists wired display. Buy only after confirming the exact handset. The same adapter can be physically compatible with the USB-C port while the phone lacks the required video-output support.
Bluetooth keyboard and mouse
These are optional but useful for either desktop mode. They avoid occupying a display adapter’s USB port and make window management and text entry more comfortable than tapping the phone.

Miracast-capable monitor or TV
A Miracast-capable screen is relevant to wireless DeX and compatible Motorola wireless-display modes. Confirm both sides of the connection: the display’s wireless technology and the phone’s model-specific support.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The monitor shows no picture
- Recheck the handset’s current support entry for wired display; an adapter cannot create unsupported video output.
- Confirm that the monitor is set to the HDMI input used by the cable.
- Try the manufacturer-documented cable or adapter path rather than assuming every USB-C accessory carries video.
- For a wireless attempt, confirm Miracast or the display technology required by the phone’s support information.
The phone supports a desktop mode but not your chosen connection
- Separate wired display, wireless display and PC support. Motorola lists these as distinct categories, and Samsung’s DeX support also varies by route.
- Switch to a supported route only after checking the exact model and software version.
DeX for PC is unavailable
- Check whether the Galaxy device runs Android 15 with One UI 7 or later; Samsung does not support DeX for PC on those versions.
- Use a supported external-display DeX route if the phone’s display compatibility allows it, or consider Samsung’s indicated Link to Windows alternative for PC integration.
An app will not open on the external display
- Check whether the app is restricted to phone-only use. Motorola specifically documents this limitation for incompatible apps.
- Run that app on the phone while using the desktop session for apps that support the larger display.
The desktop is difficult to control
- Pair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
- On DeX, use the phone as a touchpad when supported.
- On Mobile desktop, use the documented taskbar actions and physical-keyboard shortcuts.
A practical decision framework
- Write down the exact phone model and software version. This prevents a feature label from being mistaken for full compatibility.
- Choose the destination. Decide whether you need a monitor, television, paired PC or a standalone tablet workspace.
- Choose the connection. Pick wired HDMI for a direct cable, wireless display for a compatible Miracast-style screen, or a PC workflow where the manufacturer lists support.
- Check the official compatibility entry. Verify the route itself, not just the existence of DeX or Smart Connect.
- List the apps and controls you need. Include keyboard, mouse, touchpad and any app that must appear on the external display.
- Buy accessories last. Select the cable, adapter or wireless display only after the phone and connection have passed the compatibility check.
Verdict: which one should you use?
Use Samsung DeX when your supported Galaxy device is primarily becoming a monitor- or TV-based workstation, when you want the choice of wired or wireless display, or when a supported Galaxy tablet’s standalone DeX mode fits your setup. Treat DeX for PC as a separate feature because Android 15 with One UI 7 or later removes that PC workflow on affected models.
Use Motorola Smart Connect when your Motorola handset is listed for the particular display or PC route you need and the paired-PC Mobile desktop workflow is central to your routine. Its model-specific compatibility chart makes checking the exact connection especially important.
If both options meet your requirements, choose based on the phone you already own and the apps you rely on. There is no official evidence here of a universal speed, quality or productivity winner, and no comparative benchmark establishes one. Compatibility and workflow fit—not the feature name alone—decide the better desktop mode for your setup.
