For most people who need a standalone desktop, a Windows mini PC is the better choice. It runs the conventional Windows desktop and Windows applications without relying on a phone or tablet. Samsung DeX is the better fit when you already own a compatible Galaxy device, your essential apps work well on Android, and you want to reuse that device with a monitor, keyboard and mouse.
The decision is not about which product is universally faster. DeX is a desktop-style mode for a Galaxy phone or tablet; it is not Windows. A mini PC is a separate Windows computer. Your required software, exact Galaxy model and software version, display connection, and existing hardware should determine the choice.

What you are actually comparing
Samsung DeX is a mode on a Galaxy device
DeX presents apps from a compatible Galaxy phone or tablet in a desktop-style interface on a larger screen. Samsung Developer describes it as allowing a device to “cast a PC-like experience to the big screen with the same apps you use on your phone every day.” That is a vendor description, not an independent performance test, but it captures the key point: the Galaxy device remains the computer.

The phone or tablet supplies the processor, memory, storage, operating system and applications. The monitor or television is the display, while a keyboard and mouse provide desktop-style input. Android applications run in DeX; Windows desktop programs do not become available simply because DeX is connected to a large screen.

A Windows mini PC is a complete computer
A mini PC is a compact Windows desktop with its own processor, memory, storage, ports and operating-system installation. Microsoft’s mini-PC form-factor material calls this a “Full PC experience” in a compact design. That source was updated on August 24, 2021, so it supports the category distinction only; it should not be treated as current buying guidance for processors, memory, storage or Windows 11 requirements.
You connect a mini PC to a monitor or TV, add a keyboard and mouse, and use Windows independently of your phone. It can run Windows desktop applications, subject to the edition, hardware and licensing requirements of the particular model.

Check compatibility before choosing DeX
“Galaxy device” is not a sufficient compatibility test. Samsung’s U.S. DeX FAQ separates support for wired display output, wireless DeX and DeX for PC. The lists differ by model and can change with software updates. Check the exact model number and installed Android and One UI versions before buying a cable or planning a workstation.
Wired display output
A wired setup normally requires a compatible DeX or HDMI cable, an HDMI monitor or TV, and a Galaxy model that supports display output. A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee video output. Verify that the precise phone or tablet supports wired DeX before purchasing an adapter.
Wireless DeX
Wireless DeX works with supported Samsung TVs and Smart Monitors and with other displays that support Miracast, subject to the Galaxy model’s compatibility. Samsung advises keeping the Galaxy device and wireless display close to reduce stuttering and lag. Wireless convenience therefore trades away some predictability: crowded wireless conditions, distance and display support can affect the experience.
DeX for PC is a separate feature
DeX for PC means using a compatible Galaxy device inside a Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer through a USB cable or supported wireless connection. Its compatible-device list is narrower than the general DeX list. Samsung says DeX for PC is unsupported on the Galaxy S25 and S26 series, the Z Fold7, and other models updated to Android 15 with One UI 7 or later. Samsung directs affected users toward Link to Windows for that PC-connection use case.

That statement does not mean every affected device loses every DeX function. A device may still support a direct wired monitor or wireless DeX while no longer supporting DeX for PC. Treat each connection mode as a separate compatibility question.

Wired monitor or TV
- Confirm in Samsung’s current compatibility information that your exact Galaxy model supports wired DeX.
- Connect the compatible DeX or HDMI cable, or a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, to the Galaxy device and the display’s HDMI input.
- Turn on the monitor or TV and select the HDMI input used by the cable.
- Accept the DeX prompt on the Galaxy device if it appears, then choose DeX rather than ordinary screen mirroring when prompted.
- Pair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, or connect USB input devices through a suitable hub or adapter.
- Connect a suitable charger if the session will be long or demanding. USB power from a PC can be lower than the phone’s power draw, so the battery may fall while connected.
The exact cable, hub and charging arrangement depends on the Galaxy model and accessories. If the display remains blank, first recheck model support, the HDMI input, the adapter’s video capability and the cable seating.
Wireless display
- Confirm that both the Galaxy device and the target TV or monitor support wireless DeX or Miracast as required.
- Place the Galaxy device near the display and connect both to the intended wireless network when the equipment requires it.
- Open the quick settings panel on the Galaxy device and select the DeX or wireless-display option.
- Choose the compatible TV or monitor from the list and approve the connection on the display if requested.
- Pair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and test typing, pointer movement and window switching before starting important work.
For tasks that are sensitive to input delay, video timing or network congestion, a cable is generally the safer setup. Wireless DeX is most useful when avoiding cables matters more than having the most consistent connection.
DeX for PC
If your model still supports DeX for PC, install and use it only on a compatible Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, then connect the Galaxy device by the documented USB or wireless method. Samsung’s guide says users can run up to five mobile apps in this context. That is a stated feature, not a guarantee that all five apps will be comfortable for heavy multitasking or that every Android app will behave like a Windows program.
How to set up a Windows mini PC
- Choose a current model whose Windows edition, processor, memory, storage and ports meet your applications’ requirements. Microsoft’s 2021 example of 4 GB of RAM and a 32 GB-or-larger SSD is dated guidance and should not be used as a present-day Windows 11 shopping target.
- Place the mini PC where it has clear airflow and access to power, the display cable and input devices.
- Connect the monitor or TV using a port supported by both devices, such as HDMI when available. Check the mini PC’s specification for the actual port rather than assuming one.
- Connect the keyboard, mouse, network connection and power supply, then complete Windows setup and updates.
- Install the desktop applications, drivers and security updates required by your work.
- Create a backup plan before storing important files only on the mini PC.
Mini PCs vary substantially. Compact dimensions, USB, HDMI and Bluetooth are common examples in Microsoft’s category description, but the 2021 page does not establish what a current model includes. Treat every port, wireless standard, storage capacity and Windows license as a model-specific specification to verify.

Applications matter more than the interface
Make a list of the applications you use every week, not just the activities you perform. “Email,” for example, may be easy in a browser or Android app. A specialist Windows accounting package, development tool, line-of-business client, desktop database or utility may have no usable Android equivalent. If one essential application requires Windows, choose the mini PC unless you have a separately verified remote-desktop or web workflow.

For each Android app you would use in DeX, check whether it supports resizable windows, keyboard shortcuts, drag and drop, multiple windows, printing, file access and the external services your work requires. An app can launch successfully yet remain uncomfortable for sustained desktop use.
Multitasking and limits
DeX provides windows and a desktop-like layout, but it does not change the underlying mobile operating system. Samsung’s DeX for PC guide states a limit of up to five mobile apps in that context. Do not turn that number into a general performance promise: app behavior, memory pressure and the exact Galaxy model still determine how smooth a workload feels.
A mini PC gives you the normal Windows multitasking model and access to Windows software, but the experience still depends on its processor, memory, storage and cooling. The available material contains no comparative benchmark, so neither option should be described as universally faster.
Total setup and ownership decisions
DeX can be economical when the compatible Galaxy phone or tablet is already yours. It is not a zero-cost desktop if you need to add a monitor, HDMI adapter or cable, keyboard, mouse, hub or charger. A suitable display you already own can serve either route.

There is no universal price verdict in the available evidence. Compare the complete setup, not just the headline price of a phone or mini PC: include a display, input devices, adapter, charger, storage needs and any software license you actually require.

Battery and charging
Samsung notes that USB power from a PC may be lower than a Galaxy phone’s consumption during demanding workloads. The battery can therefore decrease even while connected. For a permanent desk, use a suitable power supply and check that the chosen hub or adapter does not prevent charging.

Wireless delay
Wireless DeX is convenient but sensitive to distance and radio conditions. Keep devices close, and switch to a wired display when pointer delay, video stutter or dropped connections disrupt work. A mini PC avoids the wireless-display layer when connected directly to the monitor, although its network-dependent applications can still be affected by a poor internet connection.
Updates and compatibility changes
DeX support is tied to both hardware and software. A Galaxy update can change whether DeX for PC is available, as Samsung’s Android 15 and One UI 7 guidance demonstrates. Recheck support after a major update and before replacing a cable or display that previously worked.
A mini PC also needs Windows and driver updates, but its basic identity as a Windows computer is not dependent on a phone model’s DeX feature list. Its future suitability instead depends on hardware capacity, Windows support and the applications you need.
Choose DeX when these conditions are true
- You already own a Galaxy phone or tablet confirmed to support the exact DeX connection you plan to use.
- Your essential applications are available on Android and have been checked for keyboard, mouse, window and file-management behavior.
- You value carrying one device that can switch between mobile use and a larger-screen workspace.
- You have, or are willing to provide, a compatible monitor or TV, input devices and the required cable or adapter.
- You accept that the Galaxy device remains the single point of failure for apps, battery, storage and compatibility.
Choose a Windows mini PC when these conditions are true
- You need Windows desktop software, Windows-specific peripherals or a conventional Windows file and application environment.
- The computer must operate independently while your phone is elsewhere, charging or unavailable.
- You want a fixed desk that uses a direct monitor connection and standard Windows setup and maintenance.
- You need to select memory, storage, processor, ports or Windows edition around a known workload.
- You prefer not to make display-output and DeX-mode support a device-specific compatibility project.
A practical decision procedure
- Write the non-negotiable applications. Mark any program that requires Windows or has no fully usable Android alternative.
- Identify your Galaxy model and software. Record the model, Android version and One UI version, then verify wired DeX, wireless DeX or DeX for PC separately.
- Inventory your desk. Note the display inputs, keyboard, mouse, charger, hub and available space. A missing adapter can change the total cost and convenience.
- Choose the connection. Select wired DeX for predictable display behavior, wireless DeX for cable-free convenience when supported, or a direct mini-PC connection for a conventional desktop.
- Test the hardest workflow. Before committing, use the most demanding application, file-transfer task, peripheral and monitor arrangement you expect to rely on.
- Decide whether dependence is acceptable. If losing access to the Galaxy device would stop your work, a standalone mini PC is the safer primary computer.
Troubleshooting common failures
The display is blank over USB-C or HDMI
- Confirm that the exact Galaxy model supports wired DeX and that the adapter supports video, not charging only.
- Select the correct HDMI input on the monitor or TV.
- Reconnect the cable, remove an incompatible hub, and test a known-compatible cable or display.
- Check whether the phone is showing ordinary screen mirroring rather than DeX.
Wireless DeX stutters or disconnects
- Move the Galaxy device closer to the display.
- Reduce nearby wireless congestion and confirm that the display supports the required Miracast or Samsung mode.
- Try a wired connection for sustained work or video.
The battery falls during a DeX session
- Use a suitable charger rather than relying on low-power USB from a PC.
- Check whether a hub or adapter supports charging pass-through.
- Reduce demanding workloads if the device becomes hot or the battery continues to decline.
DeX for PC is unavailable after an update
Check Samsung’s current device list and Android/One UI requirements. On devices covered by Samsung’s Android 15 and One UI 7 guidance, use a supported direct display mode where available, or consider Link to Windows for the PC-connection scenario. Do not assume that an unavailable DeX for PC feature means all DeX modes are unavailable.
Bottom-line decision
A Windows mini PC is the more dependable recommendation for everyday desktop use when “desktop” means an independent Windows computer, Windows applications and a conventional workstation. Samsung DeX is a capable reuse strategy—not a Windows replacement—when a compatible Galaxy device already meets your app needs and you are comfortable building the desk around it. Verify the exact model, software version and connection mode first; then choose based on the applications and independence your work actually requires.
