Samsung DeX vs. a laptop for software development: what works and what doesn’t

Short answer: Samsung DeX can handle light coding, browser-based development, documentation, Android terminal or editor apps that support its desktop mode, and remote access to a separate development computer. It does not turn a Galaxy phone or tablet into a general-purpose Windows, macOS or desktop-Linux workstation. If your work depends on Android Studio running locally, desktop IDE plug-ins, emulators, Docker, virtualization or platform-specific build tools, a laptop is the safer choice.

What Samsung DeX actually provides

Samsung DeX is a desktop-style interface layered on top of Android. Samsung describes it as a PC-like workspace that uses the apps already installed on a compatible Galaxy device. DeX supplies window management, a taskbar-like launcher, pointer input and external-display support; it does not replace Android with Windows, macOS or a conventional desktop Linux distribution.

That distinction determines almost every development result. An Android app that supports resizable windows, desktop density and mouse or keyboard input can feel reasonably close to a desktop utility. An app that does not support those behaviors may remain in a fixed phone-shaped window or expose only part of its functionality. Samsung’s developer guidance specifically notes that apps which do not comply with Android N multi-window standards operate in a fixed mobile dimension and cannot be resized.

Therefore, “Does DeX run software development tools?” has no single yes-or-no answer. The useful question is whether the particular editor, terminal, browser service, compiler or remote-access client you need exists as a capable Android app and behaves well in DeX.

DeX and a laptop compared

Development need Samsung DeX Laptop
Operating environment Android apps presented in a desktop-style interface. Window size, pointer support and available features vary by app. A full desktop operating system with the conventional file, process and window model expected by desktop development tools.
Native IDE and toolchain Do not assume a desktop IDE is available or supported. Android editors, terminal apps and browser IDEs cover narrower workflows. The direct path for Android Studio and other desktop IDEs, subject to each tool’s operating-system and hardware requirements.
Android Studio Local installation should not be treated as a supported DeX workflow. Google says Linux machines with ARM-based CPUs are not currently supported. Google documents installation on supported desktop operating systems, with SDK tools and optional emulator use.
Emulators and virtual devices Do not promise that a phone in DeX can run desktop emulators or several virtual devices locally. Supported desktop configurations can run the Android Emulator; Google recommends more memory and CPU capacity for larger projects and multiple virtual devices.
Displays and input Can use a supported external display, keyboard and mouse. Video-output and resolution support depend on the Galaxy model, adapter and software version. Built-in display and keyboard, with broad support for conventional docks, monitors and peripherals.
Portability An existing Galaxy device can become a light workstation when paired with peripherals, reducing the number of devices you carry. A separate computer is required, but the development environment is more predictable and self-contained.
Best role Reviewing code, small edits, documentation, web development, terminal tasks supported by Android apps, or a remote desktop shell. Local builds, full IDE work, emulators, containers, virtualization and projects tied to desktop software.

Can Samsung DeX replace a laptop for coding?

For a narrow, light workflow, it can reduce how often you need a laptop. For a complete local software-development environment, it generally cannot. Use the workload categories below rather than treating “coding” as one task.

Work that is usually workable on DeX

  • Code review and small changes: A compatible Android editor can open, search and modify source files. Test its file permissions, project navigation and Git support before relying on it.
  • Documentation and issue tracking: Browser versions of documentation, ticketing systems and code-hosting services are often practical with a keyboard and mouse.
  • Browser-based development: Cloud IDEs, web consoles and hosted build services can work well when the browser experience is complete and the network is reliable.
  • Terminal tasks: An Android terminal app may cover shell commands, scripts or remote administration that it actually supports. Package availability, background execution and filesystem access differ from desktop Linux.
  • Remote development: A remote-desktop or secure-shell client can make DeX the display and input layer while a separate computer performs indexing, compilation and testing.

These are capability-based examples, not guarantees for every Galaxy model or app. Confirm that the app supports DeX windows, pointer input, external keyboards and the project’s required files.

Work that is better on a laptop

  • Local Android Studio development: Google’s current installation requirements are written for supported desktop operating systems. They explicitly state that Linux machines with ARM-based CPUs are not currently supported.
  • Large builds and indexing: Big projects can consume substantial memory, storage and CPU time. A phone may run an editor while still being unsuitable for sustained local compilation.
  • Emulators and multiple test devices: Desktop emulator workflows require virtualization support and resources that should not be assumed on DeX.
  • Desktop plug-ins and SDKs: Tools distributed only for Windows, macOS or desktop Linux cannot be made compatible merely by connecting a monitor to a phone.
  • Containers and virtualization: Docker-style workflows, virtual machines and other kernel- or virtualization-dependent tools need an environment that supports them; DeX itself does not provide that environment.
  • Platform-specific builds: iOS, macOS and other platform-bound toolchains require their supported host systems. DeX does not remove those requirements.

Why the official Android Studio boundary matters

Android Studio is a useful dividing line because it represents the full local IDE workflow: project indexing, Gradle builds, SDK management, debugging, profiling and emulator integration. Google’s Android Studio documentation, updated October 8, 2026, says Linux machines with ARM-based CPUs are not currently supported. A Galaxy device running an ARM processor should therefore not be treated as an officially supported Linux host for the desktop IDE.

The same documentation lists 8 GB of RAM as the minimum for Studio alone. On Windows or Linux, it lists 16 GB for Studio with the emulator and recommends 32 GB; larger projects need more CPU and memory. Those figures describe Google’s supported desktop configurations and can change by operating system and release. They are not a promise that a DeX phone with similar memory can run the same workload.

You may find Android editors or browser IDEs that open source files on Android, but that is a different product category from the supported desktop Android Studio installation. Check the editor’s language servers, Git behavior, package manager, debugger and build commands individually.

Setting up a DeX development station

A practical setup uses a compatible Galaxy device, an external display and desktop peripherals. Samsung documents connected displays and keyboard or mouse input as part of the DeX workflow. Exact wired-display support is model- and region-dependent, so verify the device’s current support page before buying accessories.

  1. Check the Galaxy model and software version. Confirm that the device supports the DeX mode you intend to use, including wired display output if you want a monitor. Record the One UI and Android versions because DeX behavior changes between releases.
  2. Choose the display connection. A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter is a common path for a compatible phone or tablet. Check whether the adapter supports the monitor’s resolution and refresh rate, and whether the phone can receive power at the same time.
  3. Connect the monitor and peripherals. Attach the display, then pair or connect a keyboard and mouse. A powered hub may be necessary, but compatibility and power arrangements vary by model.
  4. Start DeX. Follow the on-screen prompt after connecting the display, or open the DeX control from the device’s quick settings. Select the external display arrangement offered by your model.
  5. Install and test the actual tools. Open the editor, terminal, browser service and remote-access client you plan to use. Test window resizing, keyboard shortcuts, file access, copy and paste, authentication and background behavior before moving a real project.
  6. Test the project, not just the app. Clone a non-critical repository, install its dependencies and run representative commands. Measure whether builds, tests and debugging are acceptable for your workload; a successful editor launch proves very little about the complete toolchain.

Peripherals solve screen and input limitations, not operating-system incompatibility. An adapter cannot make a desktop-only compiler, emulator or IDE become an Android application.

App compatibility is the day-to-day limitation

Samsung’s developer FAQ explains why one app may behave like a desktop window while another remains a small, fixed rectangle. Apps that follow Android multi-window behavior can often be resized and arranged side by side. Apps that do not comply may stay in a fixed mobile dimension and cannot be resized.

For development, inspect more than the window outline:

  • Can the app open the project directory where your files actually reside?
  • Does it support a physical keyboard, standard shortcuts, function keys and a precise pointer?
  • Can it authenticate with your code host and retain credentials securely?
  • Does it provide the language support, linting, search, Git operations and terminal commands you need?
  • Will it keep running when another app is opened or the display is disconnected?
  • Can it use external storage or a remote workspace without corrupting or duplicating files?

Answer these questions with a representative project. “Available in the Play Store” does not establish desktop-quality behavior in DeX.

A hybrid setup: DeX as a thin client

The most dependable way to combine DeX’s portability with a full development environment is to run the IDE and build tools elsewhere. DeX then acts as the monitor, keyboard and mouse interface for a remote workstation, server or cloud development environment.

Google points users with limited local hardware toward Android Studio on IDX as a cloud-IDE option. Availability, account requirements, storage limits and regional access can change, so verify the service’s current terms before making it your only environment. Remote desktop or SSH access is a workflow choice; it does not mean Android Studio is running locally on DeX.

When the hybrid model makes sense

  • You already have a suitable desktop or laptop that can run the IDE and builds.
  • Your network connection has enough speed and low enough latency for typing, scrolling and debugging.
  • Your organization permits the required remote-access software and data location.
  • You can tolerate working offline only with the limited Android tools installed on the device.

Risks to check first

  • Unstable connectivity can interrupt builds, terminals or remote sessions.
  • Source code and credentials may pass through a remote service, so review account, privacy and retention policies.
  • Cloud or remote environments may have their own pricing, quotas and software availability.
  • A remote session does not fix an unsupported local peripheral, display or keyboard.

Current DeX and One UI version caveats

One UI 8.0 external-display behavior

Samsung’s U.S. support FAQ says that, starting with One UI 8.0, DeX supports a wider range of external-display resolutions and vertical-monitor orientation. The same page says DeX mode is designed to limit the number of simultaneously open apps to five; when another app is opened, the oldest-open app is minimized. These are version-specific statements from a U.S. support page, so verify that your device and region receive the same behavior.

DeX for PC is not the same as DeX on a monitor

Samsung Knox documentation updated November 19, 2025 states: “For devices running Android 15 (One UI 7.0) or later, the DeX for PC app is no longer supported.” That notice concerns the PC integration, not every form of DeX. It does not mean that connecting a compatible Galaxy device to an external monitor has universally stopped working.

The same Knox documentation says Android 16 or One UI 8.0 and later does not support Knox Remote Support sessions in DeX mode. Organizations that rely on enterprise support or remote-control features should check those limitations separately from ordinary monitor-and-peripheral use.

The Linux-on-Galaxy history and what it does not prove

Samsung’s 2017 “Linux on Galaxy” article described a proposed Linux distribution environment intended to address developer needs that Android apps did not meet. It discussed Linux software, configuration freedom and ARM64 development, which is why some users remember Linux-on-DeX as a possible coding solution.

That historical announcement is not evidence that the Linux-on-Galaxy environment is currently available or supported. Do not buy a device expecting the old beta or assume that a modern DeX installation includes a general-purpose Linux desktop. Confirm current availability directly from Samsung if that specific environment is essential.

Choosing between DeX, a laptop and both

Choose DeX-first when

  • Your work is mostly browser-based, documentation, review or small edits.
  • You already own a compatible Galaxy device and external peripherals.
  • You can use a remote workstation or cloud IDE for builds and full IDE features.
  • You accept testing each Android app and working within its window and filesystem limits.

Choose a laptop-first setup when

  • Android Studio must run locally.
  • You need emulators, multiple virtual devices, containers or desktop virtualization.
  • Your project has long builds, heavy indexing or several simultaneous services.
  • You depend on desktop-only plug-ins, compilers or platform-specific SDKs.
  • You need a reliable offline environment with local source, dependencies and test tools.

Choose both when

A laptop can remain the build and test machine while DeX provides a portable screen and input setup for meetings, travel or quick maintenance. This arrangement is most useful when the remote connection is secure and dependable. It is not a way to avoid buying or maintaining a capable development computer; it is a way to use the Galaxy device as a convenient client.

Troubleshooting common failures

The monitor stays blank

  • Confirm that the Galaxy model supports wired video output; not every USB-C port provides it.
  • Try a known-compatible adapter and cable, and check whether the monitor’s resolution is supported.
  • Provide power through the hub or adapter if the phone cannot sustain the display connection.
  • Install current device updates, then reconnect and select DeX from quick settings.

An app is stuck in a small phone window

The app may not implement Android multi-window behavior. Look for an app update or a browser version, but do not assume a system setting can force every fixed-size app to become a full desktop window.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Keyboard shortcuts or pointer actions fail

Check the app’s own shortcut map and Android keyboard settings. Some mobile apps interpret desktop keys differently, omit function-key actions or provide limited context menus. Test the exact editor or terminal you intend to use.

A project opens but cannot build

Separate file editing from toolchain execution. Missing compilers, SDK components, package managers, permissions or native libraries may be the cause. Run the same build on a supported desktop or remote environment to identify whether the limitation is the Android app, the project dependencies or the device itself.

Bottom line for software developers

Samsung DeX is a useful Android desktop workspace, not a replacement desktop operating system. It can make an existing Galaxy device comfortable for code review, small edits, web tools, documentation, supported terminal work and remote access. A laptop remains the dependable choice for local Android Studio, substantial builds, emulators, desktop plug-ins, containers, virtualization and platform-specific toolchains. If you want both portability and full capability, use DeX as the client and keep the actual IDE and build environment on suitable local or cloud hardware.
