1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSamsung DeX problems usually come from one of four causes: the Galaxy model does not support the connection mode, the wired signal path is interrupted, the display is set to mirror instead of extend, or the phone, display, PC, or DeX software is incompatible or out of date. Start by identifying whether you are connecting by HDMI, wirelessly to a TV or monitor, or to a Windows PC. Then verify support for your exact model before replacing cables or buying a dock.
Samsung’s model lists differ by DeX route, software generation, and region. A phone that supports wired DeX may not support wireless DeX or DeX for PC. Samsung’s current guidance also says DeX for PC is not supported on models running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later; Link to Windows is the suggested alternative for those models.

First, identify the DeX connection you are trying to make
The troubleshooting path depends on the destination and connection method. Use this table to choose the relevant section before changing settings.
| Connection | What you need | Most common failure | First check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wired TV or monitor | A Galaxy device with wired DeX support, a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI cable or adapter, and an available HDMI input | No signal, or DeX never appears | Confirm model support, reseat both connectors, and select the HDMI input in use |
| Wireless TV or monitor | A Galaxy model with wireless DeX support and a display supporting Miracast; Samsung identifies 2018-and-later Samsung TVs and Smart Monitors as compatible options, subject to model exclusions | The display is not discovered, the pairing prompt is rejected, or the session stutters | Check Miracast support, Wi-Fi, software updates, and distance between devices |
| DeX for PC | A supported Galaxy model and software combination, a compatible PC, the DeX PC application, and usually a USB connection | The PC does not detect the phone or DeX will not launch | Check whether the model still supports DeX for PC, then update and restart both devices |
Do not assume that every Galaxy S, Z, or A device supports every DeX mode. Open Samsung’s current compatibility guidance for your country and check the complete model number and software version. This step matters more than buying another adapter: unsupported hardware cannot be made compatible with a different cable.

Before troubleshooting, record the setup
Write down the exact Galaxy model, Android version, One UI version, destination display model, and connection type. Note whether you are using a direct cable, a multiport adapter, a DeX Pad, a DeX Station, or a USB hub. This information prevents a common mistake: applying a solution for wired DeX to a model that only supports wireless DeX, or applying older PC instructions to a device that has moved to Android 15 and One UI 7 or later.
Disconnect accessories that are not needed for the first test. A direct phone-to-adapter-to-HDMI-to-display path is easier to diagnose than a chain containing an extension cable, capture device, hub, and switch. Once DeX works directly, add other components one at a time.
When DeX does not appear on a wired TV or monitor
A direct USB-C-to-HDMI connection is Samsung’s standard wired path. Work through the entire signal chain, from phone or tablet to adapter, cable, HDMI port, and display input.
1. Verify wired DeX support for the exact Galaxy model
Check Samsung’s current consumer support list rather than relying on the product family name. Model exclusions and software requirements change, and a tablet or phone may support one DeX route but not another. If your model is not listed for wired DeX, replacing the adapter will not solve the problem.
2. Reconnect and inspect the cable path
- Disconnect the USB-C connector from the Galaxy device and reconnect it firmly.
- Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI end at the adapter and at the TV or monitor.
- Look for bent contacts, cracked housings, frayed cable sections, or a loose USB-C plug.
- If available, test another compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable. A failed adapter can produce a blank screen even when the phone and display are supported.
- Remove unnecessary hubs or extension cables while testing. A direct connection makes it easier to isolate the failed component.
Samsung documents that a standard USB-C-to-HDMI adapter can start DeX. A USB-C multiport adapter with HDMI is another possible cable path, but every additional adapter, hub, or cable becomes another point of failure.
3. Select the correct input on the display
Use the TV or monitor’s remote or physical controls to select the HDMI input where the adapter is connected. If the display is on HDMI 2 while the cable is plugged into HDMI 1, the screen can remain blank even though the phone is working. If the display has several HDMI ports, test another port and select it explicitly.
4. Start DeX manually when automatic launch fails
After selecting the correct input, open the Galaxy device’s Quick Settings panel and tap DeX. Automatic launch can fail while the connection is still valid; starting DeX from Quick Settings can bring up the desktop without changing the hardware. If the DeX tile is not visible, edit the Quick Settings layout and look for it there.

5. Check a DeX Pad or Station for physical fit
If you are using a DeX Pad or Station, make sure the phone or tablet is seated fully and its USB-C port aligns with the dock connector. Samsung notes that some phones and tablets do not physically fit these docks. In that case, use a compatible DeX cable or USB-C-to-HDMI connection instead of forcing the device into the dock. Older docks can also introduce an extra compatibility variable, so a direct adapter is the better diagnostic test.
6. Isolate the display
Try the same Galaxy device and adapter on another compatible TV or monitor. Samsung Support says, “If the issue persists, try connecting your device to a different monitor or TV to rule out hardware compatibility,” in its article External display mirrors Galaxy screen instead of launching DeX. If the second display works, check the first display’s selected input, firmware, and compatibility. If neither display works with more than one known-compatible cable or adapter, investigate the Galaxy USB-C port or seek Samsung service.
When the external display mirrors the Galaxy screen instead of showing DeX
Screen mirroring and DeX are different modes. Mirroring reproduces the phone’s interface; DeX presents a desktop-style interface on the external display. If the TV or monitor shows exactly what is on the Galaxy screen, change the connected-display setting.
- Install any available software update on the Galaxy device.
- Confirm that the cable or adapter supports the connection and is firmly attached.
- Open Quick Settings.
- Tap Settings, then Connected devices.
- Open Samsung DeX and choose Connected display.
- Select Extend rather than a mirroring option.
If the display still mirrors after selecting Extend, test another monitor or TV. A successful test on another screen points to the original display, its HDMI input, or its firmware rather than the Galaxy device. Menu labels can vary slightly by One UI version, but the relevant control is the connected-display mode inside Samsung DeX settings.

Wireless DeX relies on wireless-display capability in both devices. Samsung documents Miracast support for wireless display and identifies Samsung TVs and Smart Monitors from 2018 onward as compatible options, although exact model exclusions apply.
Confirm display and Galaxy compatibility
Check that the TV or monitor supports Miracast or Samsung’s supported wireless-display feature. Also check that the exact Galaxy model supports wireless DeX. A display that can mirror a phone through another protocol is not automatically a wireless DeX display. If the model is absent from Samsung’s wireless list, no Wi-Fi setting can add the missing capability.
Reconnect from DeX settings
- Turn on the TV or monitor and open its wireless-display or screen-sharing function.
- On the Galaxy device, open Quick Settings and tap DeX.
- Select the target display from the available devices.
- Accept the connection prompt on the TV or monitor when it appears.
- If the display is not listed, close DeX, turn wireless display off and on again, and repeat the scan.
Samsung regional troubleshooting guidance recommends checking that both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. It also recommends installing available software or firmware updates. Menu names vary by TV model and region, so the wireless-display control may appear under a different label. A pairing prompt that times out can result from leaving the TV on a different input or exiting its screen-sharing mode.

- Compatibility: Supports USB-C DP Alt mode, USB4, and Thunderbolt connections.
Improve an unstable wireless session
- Move the phone or tablet closer to the display while testing. Distance and obstacles can make the session stutter.
- Reduce competing wireless traffic if the image freezes or drops.
- Restart both devices, then pair again rather than repeatedly retrying a stale session.
- Test another compatible display. If wireless DeX works there, investigate the first display’s Miracast implementation or firmware.
Wireless DeX avoids an HDMI cable but is more dependent on the display’s wireless implementation and local network conditions. For a presentation or long work session, a supported wired adapter is often the simpler way to remove those variables.

DeX for PC has a current software limitation that changes the diagnosis: Samsung says it is not supported on models running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later. For those devices, Samsung points users to Link to Windows instead. Do not spend time reinstalling the PC application if your model and software fall into that unsupported category.
Check support before troubleshooting the computer
Confirm the exact Galaxy model, Android version, One UI version, and PC operating-system compatibility against Samsung’s current guidance. Compatibility lists vary by region and can change with software updates. A model that previously worked with DeX for PC may lose support after moving to Android 15 and One UI 7 or later. This is a software-support change, not evidence that the USB port or adapter suddenly failed.
Fix a supported PC setup
- Update Samsung DeX on the PC and install available software updates on the Galaxy device.
- Restart both the PC and the phone or tablet.
- Reconnect the USB cable directly, without a hub, and wait for the PC to detect the device.
- If the connection still fails, test another compatible USB cable and another USB port.
- For some Snapdragon and Windows-on-ARM connection problems, Samsung advises trying a USB hub.
- Open DeX again after the USB connection is recognized.
Try the direct-connection test first, then the hub recommendation where it applies; hubs can either solve a platform-specific detection issue or add another failure point. Workplace, school, and public computers may use security software or device policies that block USB connections. Samsung says you may need to contact the PC administrator in that situation. An administrator restriction cannot be fixed from the Galaxy device’s DeX menu.
Choose the connection method that fits your setup
| Situation | Best starting option | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| You want the simplest TV or monitor connection and can run a cable | Compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable | Requires a physical cable and a free HDMI input, but has fewer wireless variables |
| Your desk needs HDMI plus USB, Ethernet, storage, or charging | Compatible USB-C multiport adapter with HDMI | More ports, but the hub adds another component to troubleshoot |
| You want to present or work without a cable | Wireless DeX on a Miracast-capable display | No video cable, but compatibility, Wi-Fi conditions, and distance affect reliability |
| You want a docked setup and your device physically fits | DeX Pad or Station | Convenient docking, but older accessories have device-fit limitations |
| You need DeX on a computer | DeX for PC only when the model and software are currently supported | Android 15 with One UI 7 or later is unsupported for DeX for PC on affected models; Link to Windows is Samsung’s suggested alternative |
Buy an adapter only after confirming that your Galaxy model supports the intended DeX mode. The defensible purchase is a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable for a wired display. A multiport adapter is useful when you also need other ports, but it should not be the first purchase for diagnosing a blank screen. DeX Pad and Station are optional older docked accessories whose physical fit depends on the device. Samsung’s documentation does not establish that one third-party brand works universally, so avoid claims of certification or guaranteed compatibility unless the manufacturer states it for your exact model.

Use this order when you cannot tell what is wrong
- Write down the exact Galaxy model and its Android and One UI versions.
- Choose the route: wired HDMI, wireless TV or monitor, or DeX for PC.
- Check Samsung’s current compatibility guidance for that model and route.
- Remove variables: use a direct cable, the correct HDMI input, or a nearby display during the first test.
- Update the Galaxy device, display firmware, and DeX PC application where applicable.
- Restart both ends of the connection.
- Test a second compatible cable or adapter if the setup is wired.
- Test a second TV or monitor. Samsung recommends this to separate display compatibility from a Galaxy hardware problem.
- If a supported PC is blocked only on a work or public computer, ask the administrator about USB security policy.
- If the model is unsupported for the requested mode, stop replacing accessories and use a supported route, such as wired DeX, wireless DeX, or Link to Windows where applicable.
What the symptoms usually mean
- No signal on a wired display: wrong HDMI input, loose or damaged adapter, incompatible cable path, or a Galaxy model without wired DeX support.
- The phone screen appears on the monitor: the connection is operating in mirroring mode; change Samsung DeX’s Connected display setting to Extend.
- A wireless display is not listed: Miracast or wireless DeX support may be missing, the devices may be on different Wi-Fi networks, or the display’s wireless function may be disabled.
- Wireless DeX connects but stutters: move the devices closer, reduce interference, update both devices, and test another display.
- DeX for PC worked before an update: check whether Android 15 with One UI 7 or later removed DeX for PC support for that model.
- Only a managed computer fails: USB security software or administrator policy may be blocking the connection.
When to suspect a hardware fault
Hardware becomes more likely after the Galaxy model is confirmed as supported, the software is current, a known-good compatible cable or adapter is firmly connected, the correct input is selected, and a second compatible display produces the same result. If another display works, the first TV or monitor is the stronger suspect. If no supported display works through more than one compatible cable or adapter, Samsung support can help determine whether the phone or tablet’s USB-C port requires service.
Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance provides procedures rather than a published failure-rate or success-rate statistic. There is therefore no reliable percentage that can predict whether a particular DeX setup will work; compatibility and the actual signal path determine the outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why won’t Samsung DeX connect to my PC?
First check whether your exact Galaxy model and software still support DeX for PC. Samsung says models running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later are not supported and recommends Link to Windows. For supported devices, update DeX and the phone, restart both, try a different USB cable and port, and check whether workplace security software blocks USB connections.
Why doesn’t Samsung DeX appear on my TV or monitor?
Confirm that the Galaxy model supports wired or wireless DeX as appropriate. For a wired setup, reseat the USB-C and HDMI connections, inspect the adapter, select the HDMI input in use, and tap DeX in Quick Settings. For wireless DeX, verify Miracast support, enable the display’s wireless-screen function, check Wi-Fi and updates, and accept the pairing prompt.
Why is my external display mirroring my Galaxy instead of launching DeX?
Install available updates, verify the cable or adapter, then open Quick Settings > Settings > Connected devices > Samsung DeX > Connected display and select Extend. If mirroring continues, test another TV or monitor to rule out display compatibility.
Does every Galaxy phone support every DeX mode?
No. Support varies by exact model, software version, region, and route. Wired DeX, wireless DeX, and DeX for PC have different compatibility lists. Check Samsung’s current model-specific guidance before buying accessories.
Can I use a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter for Samsung DeX?
Samsung documents a standard USB-C-to-HDMI adapter as a wired DeX path, provided the Galaxy model supports wired DeX. A compatible USB-C multiport adapter with HDMI can also work, but additional hubs and cables create more points of failure.
Why does wireless DeX keep stuttering or disconnecting?
Keep the Galaxy device near the display, reduce competing wireless traffic, restart and pair again, and install updates on both devices. The display must support the relevant wireless-display capability, such as Miracast, and Samsung identifies 2018-and-later Samsung TVs and Smart Monitors as compatible options subject to exclusions.
Will a DeX Pad or Station work with my Galaxy tablet or phone?
Not necessarily. Samsung notes that some phones and tablets do not physically fit these docks. Check the exact device compatibility and fit; if it does not fit, use a compatible DeX cable or USB-C-to-HDMI connection instead.
How can I tell whether the TV, adapter, or Galaxy device is faulty?
Test the setup with another compatible cable or adapter and another TV or monitor. If the second display works, the original display, HDMI input, or firmware is the likely issue. If no supported display works after those tests, contact Samsung support about the Galaxy device or USB-C port.
The Bottom Line
Start with compatibility, not accessory replacement. Confirm the exact Galaxy model and DeX route, then simplify the connection, select the correct display input or Extend mode, update both ends, and test another cable or display. Remember that Android 15 with One UI 7 or later ends DeX for PC support on affected models; Samsung recommends Link to Windows instead.
