The first is an apparent brightness and viewing-angle compromise associated mainly with the built-in Privacy Display, although reported comparisons also found the S26 Ultra slightly dimmer than the S25 Ultra with Privacy Display switched off. The second is a later-developing red or pink color shift that Samsung links to prolonged maximum brightness in strong light and says can be corrected through software calibration.
What Samsung actually confirmed
Brightness and viewing-angle variation
Samsung told TechRadar, in a statement reported by Tom’s Guide, that some variation in display quality can occur at certain viewing angles or at maximum brightness. Samsung characterized the effect as negligible in normal use.

That is an acknowledgment of an optical and display trade-off—not a blanket admission that every S26 Ultra fails to reach its advertised peak-brightness specification. Tom’s Guide also reported independent testing in which the S26 Ultra measured slightly dimmer than the S25 Ultra, including with Privacy Display disabled. That comparison does not establish a universal nit deficit or prove that every unit performs identically.

Red or pink color-balance changes
In a separate statement reported by Engadget, Samsung said it was aware of some displays developing a reddish or pink rectangular-looking area after prolonged operation at maximum brightness under strong lighting, such as conditions found in retail demonstration areas.

Samsung described this as a color-calibration problem rather than physical panel damage. It said panel replacement is not required and that software-based calibration is the intended remedy. The available report did not establish how many phones are affected, how long “prolonged” exposure means, whether ordinary outdoor use creates the same risk, or whether the symptom can recur after calibration.
Why “brightness problem” covers several different symptoms
Brightness, contrast, color balance and viewing angle can all change how bright a screen looks. The following complaints should not be treated as the same fault:
| What you see | Most likely explanation | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Dimmer only when viewed from the side | Privacy Display’s directional light control | View the phone straight-on and turn Privacy Display off |
| Darker outdoors while Privacy Display is enabled | Samsung-documented bright-environment trade-off | Disable Privacy Display when visibility matters more than privacy |
| Dark preview only in the Camera app | Dim strobing accessibility setting | Open Settings > Accessibility > Vision enhancements > Dim strobing and switch it off if unnecessary |
| Red or pink area after extended maximum-brightness use in strong light | Samsung-acknowledged color-balance issue | Document the symptom and contact Samsung |
| Persistent tint indoors at moderate brightness | Not explained by ordinary Privacy Display behavior | Request Samsung inspection |
How Privacy Display changes the screen
Privacy Display is built into the S26 Ultra’s display hardware. Samsung says it changes how pixels distribute light so the screen remains readable from the front while becoming harder to see from the side. It is not an aftermarket privacy film. Samsung explains the technology in its Galaxy S26 Ultra newsroom article.

Samsung’s US support guide says maximum-protection modes can slightly blur the image or alter colors. In bright environments, the screen may also appear darker, and Samsung recommends turning Privacy Display off outdoors when visibility is the priority. Current US controls are documented at Samsung Support.
Samsung’s regional technical explanation says the panel uses wide and narrow pixel groupings, with narrow groupings used primarily when privacy is active. Indoor brightness is described as comparable to normal mode, while bright conditions can make it appear lower: Samsung Gulf support.
Because the privacy hardware is part of the display, switching the feature off does not necessarily make every angle-dependent difference disappear. Samsung says ordinary-use impact should be negligible, while reported testing found some brightness difference versus the S25 Ultra even with the feature off.

How to test which issue you have
- Display a neutral white or gray image, then check it straight-on and at an angle.
- Repeat with Privacy Display enabled and disabled.
- Compare maximum brightness with a moderate level, both indoors and outdoors.
- Test the Camera preview separately. If only the preview is dim, check
Settings > Accessibility > Vision enhancements > Dim strobing; Samsung documents that setting at this support page. - Photograph or record any red or pink area, noting the software build, brightness level, lighting and date.
- Check the same test image in Natural and Vivid modes. The current path is
Settings > Display > Screen mode; Vivid mode includes Advanced settings for white balance and color intensity.
A patch that appears only in photographs may be caused by camera exposure or reflections, so verify it directly with a neutral test image. A tint that remains with Privacy Display off, at moderate brightness, indoors and on a gray or white screen is more serious than normal privacy behavior.

What owners should do now
- Avoid leaving the phone at maximum brightness for extended periods under intense direct light while Samsung’s remedy is still being clarified.
- Use Adaptive brightness instead of manually locking the display at maximum.
- Turn Privacy Display off outdoors if you need maximum readability, or configure it for selected apps, PIN/password entry or notification pop-ups through Samsung’s Privacy Display controls.
- Do not add a third-party privacy film as a brightness fix. Samsung warns that extra protectors can further reduce brightness, clarity or touch response.
- Contact Samsung support or an authorized service center with your recordings and software-build information before paying for a screen replacement.

Has Samsung released the red-tint fix?
The strongest available English-language report, updated July 16, 2026, said Samsung had not determined the timing of a broader software update. Later secondary coverage reported possible service-center remediation, but that claim was not verified against a public Samsung bulletin: Samsung Gadget Hacks.

As of August 18, 2026, do not assume that an over-the-air fix is universally available. Check Settings > Software update, Samsung Members notices and your regional support page for the exact build offered to your model. Samsung’s software explanation remains a company diagnosis; independent confirmation of permanent correction, recurrence rates and the reason for a rectangular appearance is limited.
What about headaches or eye strain?
Some owners have reported eye strain, headaches, nausea or dizziness and have speculated about Privacy Display or pulse-width-modulation behavior. The available coverage does not establish causation, prevalence or a medically validated safety link. Turning Privacy Display off is a reasonable troubleshooting step, but it does not prove that feature is responsible. If symptoms are significant or persistent, stop using the phone and contact Samsung and a clinician.
Is the Galaxy S26 Ultra still worth buying?
The S26 Ultra remains a logical choice if built-in privacy is valuable on public transport, in offices or in cafés and you accept some brightness and viewing-angle compromises. Be more cautious if maximum outdoor brightness, consistent color from off-axis angles or eye comfort is your top priority.

Owners of the S25 Ultra are more likely to notice a display difference because reported testing found the S26 Ultra slightly dimmer under comparable conditions. Try both phones side by side before upgrading if possible. Buyers unwilling to troubleshoot first-generation privacy-display behavior may prefer a model with a conventional panel.
Samsung lists the S26 Ultra and its specifications at its official product page. Storage, trade-in, carrier and promotional terms should be checked there at purchase time.
A separate 8-bit versus 10-bit specification dispute
This is not the same as the brightness or red-tint complaints. Samsung’s current support page says the Galaxy S26 series uses an 8-bit display panel with 10-bit mDNIe color processing: Samsung Support. Earlier briefing information led some coverage to describe the panel itself as 10-bit; Android Authority reported the discrepancy. It is a specification clarification, not evidence that the panel is defective.

Samsung has confirmed real Galaxy S26 Ultra display behavior, but “brightness problem” is too broad. Privacy Display can make the phone look darker or less uniform, especially outdoors or off-axis, while a separate red/pink color-balance symptom has been linked by Samsung to prolonged maximum brightness in strong light. The latter is being presented as software-remediable, yet its prevalence, permanence and universal update status remain unproven.
