The British Museum’s Korea exhibition runs from October 1, 2026, to January 31, 2027, in the Joseph Hotung Great Court Gallery in London. It traces Korean art and culture from 300 BC to the present through a selection of 100 works, including objects from the Lee Kun-Hee Collection. Samsung describes it as the museum’s first major special presentation of Korean art in more than 40 years.
What is the British Museum’s Korea exhibition?
Korea is a chronological exhibition spanning more than two millennia of Korean art and culture. It brings historic objects together with modern and contemporary works to explore how artistic traditions developed, absorbed outside influences and were reinterpreted over time.
The exhibition is organised by the British Museum, the National Museum of Korea and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea. It draws on works from the Lee Kun-Hee Collection, donated to Korea’s national museums in 2021, as well as loans from Korean national museums and objects from the British Museum. The collection as a whole contains more than 23,000 objects; the London exhibition is a selection, not a display of the full collection.
When and where can you see it?
The exhibition is scheduled for October 1, 2026, through January 31, 2027, at the Joseph Hotung Great Court Gallery, British Museum, London. Samsung’s June announcement links to the British Museum exhibition page for ticket access. The arrangement sets older works beside modern and contemporary art, offering a way to see both continuities and change rather than treating Korean art as a single unchanging style. British Museum curator Sang-ah Kim said the exhibition examines the circumstances in which objects were made to offer insight into makers and patrons across the centuries.
Why is the exhibition being called a landmark?
Samsung characterises the London presentation as the British Museum’s first major special presentation of Korean art in more than 40 years. It is also the European stop on the Lee Kun-Hee Collection’s international tour, following presentations in Washington, D.C., and Chicago. The attendance figures Samsung reports for those earlier stops—about 80,000 in Washington and approximately 115,000 in Chicago—are not London figures and do not establish expected attendance for this exhibition.

The exhibition’s historical sweep and its juxtaposition of traditional, modern and contemporary work give the London presentation a broader frame than a display devoted to a single period or medium. British Museum Director Dr Nicholas Cullinan described Korean art as developing over two thousand years through exchange, adaptation and reinvention.
Who was Lee Kun-Hee?
Lee Kun-Hee was the Samsung chairman whose art collection was donated to Korea’s national museums in 2021. The collection contains more than 23,000 objects, according to Samsung’s June 2026 announcement. The exhibition presents a selection of works connected to that bequest, alongside loans and British Museum holdings; it should not be mistaken for the entire collection.
