Neither replaces the other. You can skip a Samsung Account if you do not need Samsung-specific features; skipping a Google Account means giving up Google Play and Google account sync.

Do you need both accounts?
When a Samsung Account is useful
Use one if you want Samsung services such as Galaxy Store, Samsung Cloud, Samsung Health, Samsung Wallet, SmartThings or Samsung Find. When a Google Account is useful
A Google Account is the sign-in for Google Play and Google services on Android. Adding it connects account-associated information such as email, contacts and calendar events to the device. Google’s setup guidance says: “Sign in to your Google Account to access your email, contacts, and calendar, and to get apps from the Google Play Store.” Google Android Help

In particular, the Samsung Account does not replace Google services, and the Google Account is not the sign-in for Samsung’s own service catalog.

Backups are separate, so check where your data lives
Samsung Cloud
Samsung Cloud can back up selected items such as call and message history, locally saved contacts and calendars, clock data, settings, home screen information, app installation files or settings, and voice recordings. It separately syncs selected Samsung Account data, including Samsung Calendar and Contacts, Reminders, Samsung Browser, Samsung Notes, Samsung Pass, Wi-Fi and Samsung Health data. Google backup
Android backup through a Google Account can include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings and SMS/MMS. App developers control whether their apps’ data can be backed up or restored, and restore behavior can vary with Android version. Google says Android backup has up to 15 GB of Google Account storage at no charge; backup completion can take up to 24 hours. Google Android Help

Before changing accounts or resetting your phone
- Check whether each contact or calendar entry is saved to a Google Account, a Samsung Account or only on the device. Samsung says Google-account contacts and calendars are not synchronized as Samsung Account data. Samsung Cloud support
- Check that the relevant backup or sync setting is enabled and that its latest run completed before deleting an account or resetting the phone.
- Do not assume a Samsung Cloud backup contains every photo or file, or that one account’s backup can restore everything associated with the other.
Set up both lost-device options before you need them
Samsung Find
Samsung Find works with supported Galaxy devices registered to a Samsung Account. Location consent and the relevant finding settings need to be in place; power and network availability affect what can be found. If a device is off, Samsung may show only its last known location. Product names and menu labels can vary by region and software version. Samsung Find support

Adding a Google Account automatically turns on Find Hub. To find, secure or erase a device remotely, Google lists requirements including that it has power, a data or Wi-Fi connection, a signed-in Google Account, Find Hub enabled and visibility on Google Play. Google’s lost-device guidance

Account sign-in alone does not guarantee that a missing phone can be located. Confirm the finding settings while you have the device, and use a screen lock.
App stores and purchases do not transfer between accounts
Google Play and Galaxy Store are distinct stores. Google says compatible apps or content bought through Google Play can be used on another compatible Android device signed into the same Google Account, although some content may not be available on every device. A Galaxy Store purchase belongs to Samsung’s store ecosystem; do not assume it will appear in Google Play, or vice versa. Google Play Help

Which account should you use?
- Use both if you want Google Play and Google account sync alongside Samsung services such as Galaxy Store, Samsung Cloud or Samsung Find.
- Use a Google Account at minimum if you rely on Google Play or want Google account-associated email, contacts and calendar on Android.
- Add a Samsung Account when needed for Samsung-specific services, backup/sync options or Samsung Find.
Exact settings paths and available features vary across Galaxy models, One UI and Android versions, countries and carriers. Review the account and backup screens on your own phone rather than assuming another Galaxy model has the same options.
