Samsung 990 PRO vs. WD Black SN850X: Which 2TB SSD Should You Buy?

Buy whichever 2TB drive costs less from a trustworthy seller, provided its exact heatsink configuration fits your system. The Samsung 990 PRO has slightly higher manufacturer-rated peak speeds; both drives are premium PCIe 4.0 M.2 2280 SSDs with the same published endurance and warranty. Those figures alone do not establish a noticeable everyday speed advantage.

How the 2TB models compare

These are PCIe 4.0 NVMe drives in the M.2 2280 form factor, not PCIe 5.0 SSDs. Their published maximums are close, but they come from separate manufacturers’ specifications rather than one common head-to-head test. Treat them as rated peaks, not guaranteed sustained speeds.

Warranty Five-year limited warranty, or until the TBW limit is reached, whichever comes first (Samsung specifications) Five years or maximum TBW, whichever occurs first; regional terms apply (WD June 2024 datasheet)
Heatsink options Heatsink and non-heatsink variants; verify the exact model and dimensions (Samsung product information) 2TB heatsink model WDS200T2XHE and non-heatsink model WDS200T2X0E (WD June 2024 datasheet)

Manufacturer ratings are not a direct prediction of game load times or general responsiveness. Samsung notes that results vary with firmware, hardware and configuration, and its write rating uses Intelligent TurboWrite within a specific transfer size. WD also warns that performance varies with host, use conditions and capacity. A PCIe 3.0 slot or a platform with other limits will not deliver the drives’ PCIe 4.0 peak figures.

Does the Samsung 990 PRO feel faster?

Its published sequential maxima are higher, but that does not prove a perceptible difference in ordinary use. Sequential speeds describe large, mostly continuous transfers; game loading and day-to-day responsiveness depend on more than the headline maximum. Random IOPS figures are also manufacturer-rated peaks, not a direct conversion into seconds saved in a particular game.

PC Gamer’s 2026 gaming SSD buyer guide gave both 2TB drives an 87% score. The guide describes synthetic benchmarks, copying a 30GB game installation, PCMark10 and a game-level load test, and cautions that paying extra for the 990 PRO may not be worthwhile when similar performance costs less. That is useful buying context, not proof that the two drives tie in every workload.

Which is better value?

Current local prices, stock and regional listings are not established here, so compare the exact 2TB products when you are ready to buy rather than relying on launch pricing or an old sale. Confirm that the listing is for the capacity and heatsink version you intend to install.

  • HIGH-OCTANE GAMING. Experience speeds up to 7,250MB/s read and 6,900MB/s write (1-2TB models), with up to 35% faster performance than previous generation.
  • PURPOSE-BUILT. Designed for serious on-the-go gamers, with a PCIe Gen4 interface and SANDISK’s next generation TLC 3D NAND.
  • MORE TIME TO CLEAR THAT CHECKPOINT. Built with laptops and handheld gaming devices in mind, with up to 100% more power efficiency over the previous generation.
  • DO MORE WITH DASHBOARD. Ensure your drive is optimized for prime performance with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only).
  • Choose the cheaper drive if both exact models fit and your workload has no specific feature requirement. The published endurance and warranty duration do not give either model an advantage.
  • Choose the 990 PRO if its price is competitive and you specifically value its higher rated peak figures or Samsung Magician management software. Those figures do not guarantee a visible everyday speedup.
  • Choose the SN850X if it costs less or its heatsink version suits your installation better. WD lists its heatsink model as compatible with PlayStation 5.

Neither drive’s TBW rating or warranty establishes a comparative real-world failure rate. They describe endurance and warranty limits, not the probability that a particular unit will fail.

Do you need the heatsink version for PS5?

Check the console’s current fit guidance and the exact product variant before ordering. WD’s June 2024 datasheet explicitly identifies the heatsink SN850X model, WDS200T2XHE, as PS5 compatible; it does not make the same statement for the bare WDS200T2X0E model. Do not assume the bare version is equivalent for that installation.

  • PCIe Gen 3x4 interface with read speeds up to 2,200MB/s and write speeds up to 1,600MB/s

  • To support a Silicon Power PCIe SSD, the system must have an M. 2 connector with only an M key. The Silicon Power PCIe SSD does not have a b notch and therefore, the b key on the SSD connector will prevent it from being inserted

Samsung’s product information describes the 990 PRO for PC and PlayStation 5 gaming, but you should still verify the exact installed configuration and console guidance. A drive’s heatsink must fit beneath the console’s cover; do not assume every aftermarket or factory heatsink has the same clearance.

What to check before installing either drive

Desktop PC

  • Confirm the motherboard has a compatible M.2 M-key slot and supports the drive’s PCIe generation. A slower host can constrain peak performance.
  • Check whether the motherboard has an integrated M.2 heatsink or cover. Make sure the chosen drive’s heatsink does not conflict with it and that the bare drive is adequately cooled for your setup.

Laptop

  • Confirm the laptop supports PCIe 4.0 NVMe in an M.2 2280 slot; the form factor alone does not guarantee compatibility.
  • Check the manufacturer’s clearance, thickness, thermal and, where specified, single- or double-sided-drive requirements. Compatibility cannot be assumed for a particular laptop without its model-specific specifications.

Software

Samsung lists Magician as management software for the 990 PRO. WD lists WD_BLACK Dashboard for Windows and Game Mode 2.0 for the SN850X. Software can be a deciding convenience if you already use one ecosystem, but it does not outweigh fit, host support or price without a specific need.

Which one should you buy?

For most buyers choosing between these exact 2TB models, the best pick is the lower-priced drive that fits the host and has the right heatsink configuration. Select Samsung when it is competitively priced and its software or rated peak figures matter to you; select WD when it is cheaper or its heatsink SKU fits a PS5 installation. Do not pay a premium on the assumption that the Samsung’s slightly higher maximums will make routine use noticeably faster.
