Samsung 990 PRO Not Detected? How to Troubleshoot It

First find out where the Samsung 990 PRO disappears: BIOS/UEFI, Windows, or Samsung Magician. Those are different problems. If BIOS cannot see the drive, check its connection, supported slot, and system firmware. If BIOS sees it but Windows does not, check device and disk status. If Windows sees it but Magician does not, troubleshoot the utility’s visibility rather than treating that as proof the SSD has failed.

Identify the detection layer before changing anything

Check the 990 PRO in BIOS/UEFI, Windows Device Manager, Windows Disk Management, and Samsung Magician. Note the exact drive model, computer or motherboard, operating system, firmware version if available, and whether the SSD is new or holds data you need. A missing Windows volume alone does not establish that the drive has failed.

  • Missing from BIOS/UEFI: investigate the drive connection, slot support, firmware settings, system BIOS, or a drive or slot fault.
  • Present in BIOS but missing from Windows: check whether Windows enumerates the device and whether Disk Management shows a disk without a usable partition or volume.
  • Present in Windows but missing from Magician: investigate Magician’s refresh state and how the system controller presents the drive.

If the 990 PRO is absent from BIOS or UEFI

Samsung’s Internal SSD Troubleshooting FAQ recommends checking the SSD connection, BIOS settings or slots, and the motherboard BIOS. Samsung cautions that an outdated motherboard BIOS may prevent a PC from supporting an SSD. Exact slot compatibility and firmware menus depend on your computer or motherboard; consult its manual rather than assuming every M.2 slot supports NVMe drives.

  1. Shut down the computer and disconnect power as appropriate for the device. Follow the system maker’s safety instructions before opening it.
  2. Using the computer or motherboard manual, verify that the slot supports an M.2 NVMe SSD and reseat the drive carefully. Do not force it.
  3. Check the relevant BIOS settings using the system maker’s instructions. Menu names and options vary by system.
  4. Check the computer or motherboard maker’s support page for a BIOS update. Follow its procedure exactly; do not interrupt an update.

If the drive still does not appear, Samsung recommends trying it in another computer to help isolate whether the fault follows the SSD. An M.2 NVMe USB enclosure is another possible test setup, but verify that it supports NVMe—not just M.2 SATA—and that its physical-size and USB interfaces match. A single enclosure result is not conclusive proof that the SSD has failed.

If BIOS sees the drive but Windows does not

Device Manager and Disk Management answer different questions. Device Manager can show whether Windows enumerates a device; Disk Management can show whether Windows has a disk and usable partition or volume. Check both before concluding the drive is dead.

  1. Open Device Manager and look for the SSD or its storage controller. If Windows does not list it, consult the computer maker’s documentation for the relevant storage-controller configuration.
  2. Open Disk Management and check whether the disk appears without a partition or volume.
  3. If the SSD is new and empty, partitioning and formatting may be needed before Windows can use it. Samsung describes this as a possible reason an SSD is not recognized as a usable Windows disk.

Do not initialize, partition, or format the drive if it contains data you need. These operations can make recovery harder or destroy data. Stop and establish your backup or recovery options before making changes.

If Windows sees the drive but Samsung Magician does not

Magician’s inability to display a drive is not the same as BIOS or Windows failing to detect its hardware. Samsung’s Magician Software FAQ recommends refreshing Magician or restarting the computer and confirming that the operating system detects the SSD.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Refresh Magician, then restart Windows if the drive still does not appear.
  • Check whether the SSD is presented through a RAID or SCSI controller mode, or connected through a port associated with the visibility issue described in Samsung’s FAQ.
  • Samsung says older AMD chipsets or drivers may not be supported by Magician and suggests Microsoft’s default driver for this utility-recognition problem. That suggestion concerns Magician visibility; it is not a fix for a drive missing from BIOS.

Check firmware only when the drive is communicating reliably

Firmware is model- and date-sensitive. On the Samsung 990 PRO support listing checked on October 3, 2026, Samsung lists firmware 8B2QJXD7, released in December 2025, to improve read-operation stability. The same listing describes 7B2QJXD7, released in September 2025, as addressing intermittent non-recognition and blue-screen issues. See Samsung’s SSD Tools & Software page for the current model-specific listing and instructions; availability and relevance can change.

Back up important data before attempting a firmware update. Samsung strongly advises a complete backup, even though its FAQ says the update process does not affect stored data. An update utility also needs to communicate with the SSD, so firmware flashing is not a remedy when the drive is undetected by the utility.

When to stop troubleshooting and escalate

If the drive remains absent in a verified compatible slot or another compatible computer, contact Samsung support or use the applicable warranty channel. If the SSD holds important data that is not backed up, stop formatting, initializing, or experimenting with resets and seek qualified data-recovery advice before making further changes. The Samsung pages cited here do not endorse a particular recovery provider.
