Then check the common blockers: an external USB connection, RAPID mode, RAID or unsupported storage drivers, and interrupted update preparation. Back up important files before trying again; Samsung says firmware upgrades cannot be rolled back.
Check the drive, installed firmware, and available update
- Open Samsung Magician and select the 990 PRO. Confirm that the model is identified as a Samsung 990 PRO 2TB, note its current firmware version, and check Drive Details or the firmware update control to see whether Magician offers an update. Samsung says Magician displays a new-firmware notice when an update is available; if no update is offered, do not install a different model’s firmware package. Samsung Magician
- Check Samsung’s current consumer-storage download page for the 990 PRO listing and the latest Magician software. Samsung lists firmware ISO 8B2QJXD7, released in December 2025, with the release note “To improve read-operation stability.” The same page lists 7B2QJXD7 (September 2025) for intermittent non-recognition and blue-screen issues, and 4B2QJXD7 (December 2024) for reports of high temperatures logged in Magician. Those notes describe release purposes, not proof that your drive has a particular fault or needs a specific version; match the firmware to the exact drive and follow Samsung’s instructions.
- If Magician does not show the SSD at all, refresh the app or restart the computer, then check whether the drive is recognized in the system. Remove the update’s common blockers
Make sure the SSD is installed internally
Samsung says firmware updates cannot be performed through an external USB connection. If the 990 PRO is in a USB enclosure or attached through a USB adapter, connect it internally using a supported motherboard connection before attempting an update. Disable RAPID mode and close other applications
Samsung’s FAQ states: “Firmware updates cannot be performed on SSDs with RAPID mode enabled.” If RAPID mode is on, disable it in Magician before retrying. Samsung also recommends closing applications other than Magician during the update. Samsung’s firmware FAQ
Check RAID, controller, and storage drivers carefully
Samsung says Magician does not support SSDs configured in RAID mode through the BIOS. It also documents that firmware updates may fail with some AMD controller connections or custom storage drivers. These are possible compatibility issues, not a diagnosis of your PC. Do not casually switch a boot drive’s controller mode: changing it without system-specific guidance can leave Windows unable to boot. Samsung’s installation guide discusses default Microsoft drivers in the AMD-controller case, but whether changing a driver is appropriate depends on the computer’s configuration. Retry with the required precautions
- Back up important data before updating. Samsung says the update process does not affect stored data, but strongly recommends a complete backup, and the firmware upgrade cannot be rolled back. Samsung’s firmware FAQ
- Make sure the computer will remain powered throughout the update. Do not turn it off or interrupt the process. Close other applications, keep Magician open, and be ready for the reboot or shutdown/restart behavior Samsung documents.
- Retry the update only if Magician recognizes the correct drive and offers firmware for it. After completion, reboot if prompted or as Samsung instructs, then reopen Magician to verify the drive’s reported firmware version.
Use Samsung’s bootable ISO only if the in-app route still fails
Samsung also documents updating from bootable USB or CD media created from the firmware ISO. Its download page lists the 990 PRO ISO, but use only Samsung’s current instructions for the exact model and confirm the firmware image matches your drive before proceeding. Keep power uninterrupted during the update. Samsung confirms this is an alternative method; it does not establish that bootable media is universally safer or more successful than Magician. If Magician cannot authenticate the SSD, Samsung advises checking the internet connection and restarting the PC. If authentication still fails, contact an authorized Samsung service center. When asking for help, provide the exact model, current firmware version, Magician version, connection/controller setup, and the full error message. If the drive identity or appropriate firmware remains uncertain, get Samsung support’s guidance rather than guessing at a package. Samsung Magician support
