Samsung 9100 PRO vs. Crucial T705: Which PCIe 5.0 SSD Should You Buy?

Neither the Samsung 9100 PRO nor the Crucial T705 is a clear winner for every PC. Samsung lists a higher maximum sequential write speed, while the T705’s 2TB model has closely matched peak read and write ratings and comes in heatsink and non-heatsink versions. Choose by capacity, your motherboard’s PCIe support and cooling, and the current price of the exact model—not peak numbers alone.

Samsung 9100 PRO vs. Crucial T705: specifications by capacity

These are M.2 PCIe 5.0 NVMe drives, but manufacturer peak ratings vary by capacity. Compare the same capacity and treat the sequential speeds as published maximums, not guaranteed results in every PC or workload.

Speeds and endurance figures are manufacturer specifications: Samsung’s 2025 9100 PRO figures are in its announcement, and the T705 figures are in Crucial/Micron’s 2024 product flyer. TBW means terabytes written, an endurance rating rather than a prediction of when an individual drive will fail.

Which drive is faster in actual use?

On published specifications, Samsung’s highest sequential-write rating is 13,400 MB/s, compared with 12,700 MB/s for the T705 at 2TB. The T705 2TB’s 14,500 MB/s read rating is close to the Samsung 2TB’s 14,700 MB/s. Those differences describe peak sequential transfers; they do not establish which drive will boot Windows faster, load games faster, or feel quicker in everyday apps.

Sequential speeds are most relevant to large-file transfers and other workloads that move data in long, continuous streams. For a broader real-world comparison, look for independent tests at the same capacity, using the same system, benchmark settings, and workload. Test context can change results: in its March 18, 2025 review, TechRadar reported initially measuring lower sequential read performance for the 9100 PRO, then reaching the advertised read speed after changing test platforms. It also noted that its tested 9100 PRO was 4TB while competing drives were 2TB. That is a reason to check test conditions and capacity—not a reason to dismiss independent testing.

Will your PC support PCIe 5.0 speeds?

The drives need a compatible PCIe 5.0 M.2 connection to reach their advertised interface-level performance. Samsung lists backward compatibility with PCIe 4.0 x4 and PCIe 3.0 x4 in its 9100 PRO datasheet; Crucial describes the T705 as backward compatible with PCIe 4.0 and 3.0 in its product flyer. A slower host link will limit throughput, so check the motherboard manual for the specific M.2 slot’s generation and configuration before buying. Samsung also advises buyers to confirm system support in its announcement.

Do you need a heatsink for the Crucial T705?

Both drives are sold in heatsink and non-heatsink variants. The T705 flyer recommends installing the non-heatsink model with a motherboard or alternate heatsink for optimal performance. Its statement that the bundled heatsink avoids thermal throttling applies under typical airflow and ambient-temperature conditions; it is not a guarantee for every case or enclosure.

Choose the cooling version that matches the slot you will use. A motherboard’s built-in M.2 heatsink may make a bare drive the sensible fit, but check the board and drive instructions, physical clearance, and whether the slot’s cooling solution is available for that position. If the slot does not provide suitable cooling, compare the heatsink model with a compatible alternative before ordering.

Warranty and endurance: what the ratings mean

Both manufacturers list a limited five-year warranty. For the T705, Crucial states that coverage lasts five years or until the applicable maximum TBW is reached, whichever comes first. Samsung’s warranty is also limited; check its current regional terms and the applicable capacity and endurance limit in the product documentation before purchase. The TBW figures in the table are the listed endurance limits, not additional warranty coverage beyond those terms.

Which PCIe 5.0 SSD should you buy?

Choose the Samsung 9100 PRO if…

  • You prioritize the higher published maximum sequential-write rating and your workload regularly writes large files.
  • You want an 8TB option; the cited T705 specifications go up to 4TB.
  • Its price and cooling configuration suit your build, or Samsung’s software and ecosystem matter to you. Check current feature support before relying on a particular software feature.

Choose the Crucial T705 if…

  • The live price or heatsink option for the exact capacity better fits your build.
  • You want its published 2TB peak ratings of 14,500 MB/s read and 12,700 MB/s write, while recognizing these are manufacturer figures rather than a guarantee of application-level speed.
  • Your motherboard’s cooling arrangement makes the available heatsink or non-heatsink model the more practical fit.

Check the exact model and price before ordering

  1. Choose capacity first, then compare prices for the same capacity; do not use a different-capacity drive’s peak figures as a like-for-like comparison.
  2. Check the product listing for the exact heatsink variant and confirm it fits the intended M.2 slot.
  3. Compare the current local price per usable capacity. A price cut reported by TechRadar in October 2026 is time-sensitive, not a dependable reference price: the report does not establish today’s price or availability.
  4. Confirm PCIe generation, slot configuration, physical clearance, and applicable warranty terms in the motherboard and drive documentation.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
