Short answer: The Samsung 9100 PRO is faster when it is installed in a PCIe 5.0 x4 slot, especially for very large sequential transfers. The Samsung 990 PRO is usually the smarter buy for a PCIe 4.0 computer, gaming, office work and app launches, where the practical difference is often small.

The verdict in one minute

The 9100 PRO has a newer PCIe 5.0 x4 interface and Samsung rates it for up to 14,800 MB/s sequential reads and 13,400 MB/s sequential writes. The 990 PRO is a PCIe 4.0 x4 drive with sequential reads in the roughly 7,450 MB/s class. That makes the 9100 PRO the clear peak-bandwidth winner on a compatible motherboard.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That advantage is not universal. Windows file copies, game loading and office applications frequently use shallow queues and small random requests rather than the deep, sequential workload used for headline benchmark numbers. In those situations, the 9100 PRO can feel little different from a 990 PRO. If your motherboard only exposes PCIe 4.0, the 9100 PRO cannot use its Gen5 bandwidth; the 990 PRO normally delivers better value.

Choose the 9100 PRO for a PCIe 5.0 system that regularly handles very large video, photo, AI, engineering or game-development files. Choose the 990 PRO when your platform is PCIe 4.0 or your priority is the lowest cost for everyday responsiveness.

Interface and motherboard support

9100 PRO: PCIe 5.0 x4

The 9100 PRO is an M.2 2280 NVMe 2.0 SSD using four PCIe 5.0 lanes. To reach its advertised throughput, the M.2 socket must be wired for PCIe 5.0 x4 and the platform must provide a Gen5-capable CPU and motherboard path. A Gen5 drive installed in a slower slot remains compatible, but the slot becomes the performance limit.

990 PRO: PCIe 4.0 x4

The 990 PRO uses four PCIe 4.0 lanes. On a PCIe 4.0 system it already operates close to the practical interface ceiling, so replacing it with a 9100 PRO does not create a second Gen5 link. Check the motherboard manual rather than relying on the socket’s physical shape: an M.2 connector can accept the drive while still being connected to fewer lanes or an earlier PCIe generation.

How much faster is the 9100 PRO in controlled testing?

PCIe 5.0 sequential throughput

ComputerBase’s March 29, 2025 controlled test measured 14,741 MB/s sequential reads and 13,437 MB/s sequential writes for the 9100 PRO in CrystalDiskMark on PCIe 5.0 x4. Those results closely track Samsung’s 14,800/13,400 MB/s claims and are nearly twice the sequential-read class of a 990 PRO.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sequential transfers are the workload in which the interface change matters most. Copying a large disk image, rendering cache, camera-original archive or project directory can keep several lanes busy for long enough to expose the bandwidth difference.

What happens when the 9100 PRO is forced to PCIe 4.0?

ComputerBase ran the 9100 PRO in PCIe 4.0 x4 mode and found that peak sequential throughput fell to the same interface ceiling that constrains the 990 PRO. The drive still showed an approximately 50 percent advantage in a practical single-queue sequential-read test, indicating that controller and firmware behavior can matter even when both drives share the same bus limit. Random-read differences in that configuration were scarcely different.

This is why buying a 9100 PRO for a Gen4-only computer is not equivalent to buying a Gen5 upgrade. You may see a particular benchmark lead, but you give up the principal reason to pay for the newer drive: sustained Gen5 bandwidth.

Office-style storage test

In ComputerBase’s PCMark 10 office-style storage test, the 9100 PRO’s PCIe 5.0 run was only 3 percent ahead of its PCIe 4.0 run. In the same test, the 9100 PRO operating in PCIe 4.0 mode was 17 percent ahead of the 990 PRO. The small Gen5 uplift shows that common application traces do not continuously stream data at the interface’s maximum rate.

Real-world file transfers: faster, but not always twice as fast

PCWorld found that the 9100 PRO led synthetic sequential tests but did not lead every practical transfer. Its 48GB transfer finished about two seconds behind the fastest PCIe 5.0 competitors in that test. A 450GB write took 146 seconds, which was 16 seconds, or 11 percent, behind the fastest result measured there.

Those comparisons were against other high-end Gen5 drives, not a direct claim that the 990 PRO is faster. They do show why a benchmark score should not be converted into a promise that every copy operation will finish twice as quickly. Source-disk speed, file sizes, queue depth, background activity, free space, thermal state and the destination drive can all dominate a transfer.

PCWorld also noted that Windows Explorer generally uses a single queue. The 9100 PRO’s largest advantage appears when software can issue enough outstanding work to keep the Gen5 link and controller busy. A copy made through Explorer from one ordinary SSD to another may not create that condition.

Gaming, Windows and office work

Game loading

Games usually mix small random reads, metadata access and decompression with occasional sequential streaming. Faster storage can reduce some load phases, but the CPU, game engine, shader compilation and asset decompression often contribute as much as the SSD. TechRadar therefore positions the 9100 PRO primarily for professionals saving very large files and says gamers seeking shorter load times may obtain better value elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 9100 PRO can still be a sensible game-drive choice if you already own a PCIe 5.0 platform, want one large, fast drive for several workloads, or value future headroom. Do not expect the 14,800 MB/s specification by itself to produce a proportional frame-rate increase or a consistently dramatic reduction in loading screens.

Windows startup and application launches

Booting Windows and opening applications involve many small reads at shallow queue depth. ComputerBase’s small PCMark 10 Gen5 uplift is consistent with that behavior. A healthy 990 PRO is already fast enough that CPU initialization, services and application work commonly determine the elapsed time.

Large archives and virtual machines

Creating or extracting large archives, moving virtual-machine images and working with scratch files can benefit more than ordinary launches because the workload contains longer sequential phases. The gain depends on whether the source and destination can supply data quickly enough and whether compression or encryption becomes the bottleneck.

Video editing and other professional workloads

When the 9100 PRO makes sense

The 9100 PRO is most defensible for editors and creators who repeatedly save or retrieve very large media projects on a PCIe 5.0 workstation. Examples include multi-camera footage, high-resolution image sequences, large audio sample libraries, AI datasets, engineering simulations and game-development builds. A fast scratch volume can shorten waits when the application issues sustained, parallel I/O rather than a single shallow stream.

TechRadar tested a 4TB 9100 PRO on an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X and X870E platform with motherboard cooling and found it particularly compelling for professional workloads involving frequent very-large saves. That test used a 4TB 9100 PRO while most comparison drives were 2TB, so capacity differences can affect a direct price or performance comparison.

When a 990 PRO is enough

If your editing consists mainly of 1080p or 4K timelines whose media sits on a separate fast drive, or if you make occasional exports rather than constant large saves, a 990 PRO can provide the responsiveness you need at lower platform cost. The 9100 PRO’s value rises with the amount of time your workflow spends transferring data, not simply with the presence of a professional application.

Does a PCIe 5 SSD work in a PCIe 4 slot?

Yes. The 9100 PRO is backward-compatible with a PCIe 4.0 x4 slot and will negotiate the older generation. The trade-off is bandwidth: the Gen4 link prevents the drive from reaching its 14,800/13,400 MB/s headline figures. ComputerBase measured that drop directly, with peak sequential results falling to the Gen4 interface ceiling.

  1. Confirm the socket’s supported generation and lane count in the motherboard manual.
  2. Install the drive in the fastest M.2 socket, since some secondary sockets share lanes with other devices or run through the chipset.
  3. After installation, verify the negotiated link speed in the motherboard firmware or operating system. It should report PCIe 5.0 x4 on a Gen5 platform or PCIe 4.0 x4 on a Gen4 platform.
  4. Use a sequential benchmark only after the drive has adequate cooling and firmware. Compare results with the expected link generation, not with an unattainable Gen5 number on a Gen4 system.

Buying a 9100 PRO for a Gen4 system is reasonable for a higher-capacity model, a planned platform upgrade or a measured single-queue benefit. It is difficult to justify solely for peak throughput on that current system.

Thermals and heatsink choices

Samsung sells heatsink versions of the 9100 PRO at an official MSRP $20 above the corresponding bare-drive versions. Thermal behavior depends on the host system, motherboard M.2 cooler, case airflow, workload duration and firmware. Long sequential writes generate more heat than short application launches and can trigger thermal management that lowers sustained speed.

Use the bare drive when

  • Your motherboard includes a substantial M.2 cover or heatsink that makes good contact.
  • The slot sits in a well-ventilated area and your workload is mostly short, mixed activity.
  • The motherboard’s cover is certified for the drive’s height and does not require removing its thermal pad.

Choose the heatsink version when

  • The motherboard provides no adequate M.2 cooling.
  • Your chassis airflow is limited and you routinely write very large files.
  • You want the drive’s own heatsink rather than adding a compatible third-party solution.

Do not stack the Samsung heatsink under a motherboard M.2 cover unless the board documentation explicitly allows it. Check physical clearance around the socket, graphics card and cover before buying.

Capacity and price

Samsung announced the 9100 PRO on February 26, 2025, with availability beginning March 18, 2025. The announcement lists 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB capacities. Official US MSRP was $199.99 for 1TB, $299.99 for 2TB and $549.99 for 4TB; heatsink versions were $20 higher. Regional street prices, sales and taxes can differ, and the cited announcement did not state an 8TB MSRP.

9100 PRO capacity Official US MSRP at launch Heatsink-version premium
1TB $199.99 $20
2TB $299.99 $20
4TB $549.99 $20
8TB Not stated in the cited announcement Not stated

The available evidence does not establish a 990 PRO MSRP for a like-for-like table. Compare the actual prices in your region at the time of purchase, including any cost for a motherboard heatsink or a future platform upgrade. Capacity also matters: a 4TB 9100 PRO cannot be judged purely against a 2TB drive without accounting for the extra storage.

Power and vendor specifications

Samsung claims up to 49 percent improved power efficiency versus the predecessor, along with up to 2,200K random-read and 2,600K random-write IOPS for the 9100 PRO. These are vendor specifications measured under Samsung’s stated conditions, not guarantees for every computer. Firmware, queue depth, temperature, motherboard implementation and workload can change the observed result.

Common pitfalls and fixes

Expecting a twofold improvement everywhere

The interface is roughly twice as wide, but applications are not automatically twice as fast. Check whether the software performs long, parallel sequential transfers before paying for the upgrade.

Installing it in the wrong M.2 socket

A secondary socket may be Gen4-only or share chipset bandwidth. Use the manual’s lane diagram and verify the negotiated link after installation.

Comparing different capacities as if they were identical

NAND configuration and capacity can affect sustained behavior. TechRadar’s 4TB 9100 PRO comparison against mostly 2TB drives is an example of why capacity should be recorded alongside the benchmark result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring the source or destination drive

A fast 9100 PRO cannot make a slow source disk, external connection or destination drive deliver Gen5 speeds. For a fair copy test, record both devices, connection type, file set, free space and whether background activity was running.

Running long writes without cooling

Use the motherboard heatsink or the 9100 PRO heatsink version when the system lacks adequate M.2 cooling. Repeat a sustained test only after the drive has returned to a normal temperature, because thermal management can change later-run results.

Bottom line

The 9100 PRO is the faster SSD in the technical and sustained-throughput sense when a PCIe 5.0 x4 platform and a workload capable of using it are present. The 990 PRO is the more sensible all-round purchase for PCIe 4.0 systems and everyday computing, where the measurable and visible difference is usually modest.
